In regards to being damned to purgatory for your choices, regretting not having sided with abstinence or repentance even when it might have been afforded (the "didn't do", part) is pretty unnerving. No one did nothing. Never once. Everyone can sympathize with this idea, then; to regret losing the chance to do nothing, forever. An unlearned person would see that this line of wisdom is cause for inspiration towards involving in more things that their life may have to offer, lest they meet with disappointment. A more enlightened person would see it that disappointment may be evaded if the chance to abstain from superficial involvements -- to continue doing nothing, respectively -- is respectfully preserved & kept available.
