I used to do time/passes but checking for a burr every so often seems to work better for me. Then you just lop the burr off and go until you get another burr on the other side and move to the next grit. When you are on the last one, you just don't develop the second burr on the last grit.

Sawing back and forth in the same area is going to leave different thicknesses in the blade unless you do the same amount of back and forth strokes every time you move. You will end up with a wavy edge. Just to be technical. Will you have a sharp knife when you are done? Of course.

I have always sharpened knives by hand following the simple instructions of; "Slide the blade across the stone like you are trying to slice a thin slice off an apple. Repeat on both side and use plenty of oil." Been doing it since the 70s, I hold the stone in left hand and knife in other and sharpen that way because the instructions didn't say hold the stone on a table. So I've been sharpening knives wrong to razor sharp for over 50 years. I mostly sharpen knives for working, scalpels are only taken to 800 grit at most with a light strop, butcher edges are the same, they want to cut meat with a toothy edge.

A week after buying the Spyderco "V shaped thing", (which seems a little bizarre and uncontrolled), I saw your reveal of this sharpener, and smacked myself on the forehead. THIS is what I need...but didn't want to spend the $200+ on KME/Wicked Edge/whatever. Just something to put an edge on, or fix a ding. Mine should be shipped from Amazon next week(?) $50. What a deal.
BTW, $49.95 seems to be the going price. Besides Amazon, Blade HQ has them "Coming Soon" at the same price.

Too many moving and adjustable parts that can fail or become off angle. I still would choose my KME. That said the only people that would pay $400+ for a sharpening system to sharpen $600+ knives are the only people that this system being off a degree or 2 is gonna bother. The stones need to be wider though, that was my problem with the lansky systems, more prone to rolling of the tip. Looks like a great budget or beginner option. Plus I can be lazy and sit in my recliner and sharpen my knives holding my KME in hand lol.

Huh. Back when I got my hapstone, it was just wicked edge and edgepro. Love my hapstone, though. If I'm just matching angles instead of reprofiling, it takes me like 5min to put a screaming edge on S110V, but that's more on the stones than the hapstone itself.
I was under the impression that you should 1) always use water with diamond stones if you don't want to wear them out super fast, and 2) the stone should always go transverse to the edge. I learned from Cliff Stamp's tutorials, so maybe I'm just old school.

I own the $50 combo electric sharpener from WS, as well as two of the field sharpeners, but I should’ve looked at this first, I admit it!

24 degrees? No wonder my xm-18 didn't cut worth a darn until I reprofiled it to 17 a side. thats nearly 50 DEGREES INCLUSIVE! I know mine was obtuse...it looked like 45 degrees inclusive at least. So much better now, I carry it every day. But that factory edge, while sharp, was pitiful. My xm-24 though is much better from factory. Still, Hinderers are supposed to be 20-22 degrees per side. 24 is WAY too much. Lower that angle man!

I have a sharpening system, but I don't drag it out into the field with me. I use their Guided Field Sharpener when I'm outdoors. For $50, this thing could live in my truck instead of that one.

If work sharp comes out with everything rumored for this system such as a longer rod, more tri- stone modules and a universal stone holder....there won't be a need for a kme.
I had compared my kme with this few nights ago....this is much easier to set angles with and I feel the jaws are better than the jaws on the kme....held my para 2 and 3 much much more securely.
And for $49.95 how can you go wrong.

@@fldiverjc4496 I've sharpened a few knives with it and really like it. Nice upgrade from my Lansky diamond deluxe. I could get a mirror edge off it with the ceramic stones. Hoping I can with this when they release more.

    • @fldiverjc4496
      @fldiverjc4496 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@slo_carry I have no doubts that you will be able to get fantastic results with this.
For me the lansky system takes much longer to get the results you want....I was never crazy about the slip between guide rod and angle slot, nor only having four angles to choose from....it got old really fast when I needed to reprofile blades to fit the lanskys angles.
Not knocking the lansky...they been around forever and have a huge selection of stones....but if you go all in...your spending over $300 and at that price point your playing with some heavy hitters that the lansky can't compete with. Every now and then for nostalgic reasons I will break it out and use....

I'm like you in that I prefer the up and down motion rather than the full side sweep. you might also want to put some sharpie on the tip area and check that as well. the thickness of the blade can give you a much larger bevel on the tip even with the identical angle as the body of the blade.

I have one of these and I don’t understand all the positive reviews that this product is getting. For one thing the part that holds the knife clamps on to the knife okay but the magnets that hold it in place are not strong enough, mine has fallen out numerous times right in the middle of a stroke. While I did manage to get two knives fairly sharp the abrasive is pretty much gone and It needs to be replaced. Also the little rubber washers don’t stay on and had to find a new one for the bottom.
