    Hi Peter, I enjoy watching your TH-cam videos and this one was no exception!! I have the IC705 and this afternoon worked VE9XX with 10w and my endfed half wave for 40 mtrs on the 14 m band which was wide open. I think the 705 is much better than the KX3 for many reasons, the main ones being the great audio from the internal speaker, the built-in spectrum scope and the more robust build quality! Anyway keep the good work up 73 Alex M0KVA.

    That seems like an interesting concept: I could see a use for a dipole like that, assuming the weight is not too heavy for collapsible temporary masts.

    Hi Peter, i had the exact same set up many years ago using the Icom AH-4 up on a pole on the chimney with even legs of wire each side feeding an IC756 and it worked well. I did have to extend the control cable myself as there was no extension kit for the AH-4. 73 and HNY. Syd

    Good theory about the ATU, but I would rather tune the aerial. Though when you get to very long wires it can be a bit difficult.
    All the best for 2021 Peter and may 2021 be a good and prosperous New Year for you.

    Could the Elecraft tuner be used as a dipole centre in the same way you are suggesting with the Icom ah705? The Elecraft tuner has the benefit of handling twice the power, too.

      Hi there. yes it can be but do remember it is not weatherproof. So strictly for portable work. 73 Peter

    I think Icom missed a vertical marketing feature. How convenient it would be if the ATU clipped into the battery recess without the need of external control cable and coax patch. Then piggyback the battery onto the ATU for a unitised approach. As for the two cell vs 13.8V I would not be surprised if it contains a switching voltage booster.

    Cheers! There are LDG TUNERS LDG-200Pro Il 250Watt and LDG Z100 which manages 125Watt - quite sufficient for both these to use with both IC705(10W) & IC7100(100W).

    the 20 yr old ldg z11 is an auto tuner and requires no control cable and runs off two 9v batteries... my choice is a small matchbox with a tayloe led swr indicator, such as the qrpkits sota tuner, which is about the size of a matchbox and requires no batteries

    I'm not sure why the tuner would not work with a 1/2 wave end-fed antenna. The associated transformer with the end-fed should bring the impedance close to 50 ohms. Likely I'm missing something. Thanks for the video. Always enjoy them.

    • @watersstanton
      @watersstanton 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The reference to an end fed half wave is without a transformer. With a transformer there would be no problem.73 Peter

    450g is not light for a portable radio that's already heavy for hiking. They didn't put an ATU in so they can sell you the next version (IC-705MII). This ATU is an after thought. Price will be 300US...Mystery solved.

    • @watersstanton

      Was my first though: IC-705MKII in 2022/23, with Tuner, 2 antenna connectors for HF and VHF/UHF, USB-C, Full USB-Functionality via Bluetooth, GPS disciplined oscillator, APRS, 12V battery and a variety of decoding capabilities like PSK31 and maybe even FT8 etc.. What about a WSPR beacon mode?
      And, yes, I would buy that!
