Maybe I'm weird for this but I really dislike when the players with the most potential stop playing. I completely understand it & I respect the players decisions but I feel like mrekk this year alone could produce plays that we never thought possible even for him. Seeing his blue dragon dt score I could def imagine him fcing that this year and scores like that and others I feel like he could realistically do with some improvements (like mou ii kai rain dt) could really redefine how we view osu as a whole. So him taking a break is completely respectable but at the same time it takes away from all the insane crazy things that couldve happened if he decided to keep pushing himself to his absolute limits.

The actual physically possible cap is so far you probably don't have to worry about it for at least like another 10 years or so, ofc people are different and have different physical cap, but judging from how fast this dude is improving I'm pretty sure he's fine
if we compare it to physical sports like bodybuilding and athletics, records that were seen as impossible have been broken multiple times with a combination of genetics and LOTS of hard work. And people have been competing internationally in these sports for 60+ years and osu, being just over 10 years old has yet to get there
There is a problem that osu doesnt have big price poll tournaments. Imagine 10k$+ prise polls for every decent event and like 100k for OWC. That is real motivation to play and improve even for #1 player.

Being #1 and being able to dominate tourneys require entirely different skillsets. The only way the current PP leaderboard is ever going to start overlapping with tourney skillsets is by taking pp away from players in the form of PP decay if you don't consistently fc maps you FCed before and by punishing players that got a lot of chokes on maps, like if a map is a 1 miss and you get that 1 miss 2 times before fcing, it would take the pp from the first two chokes and the final fc pp and divide by the play count essentially giving a mean average pp count. And you'd get severely less PP if you only play one skill set, so you'd need to farm both hd low ar mid ar high ar, dt with and without hd hr with and without hd, ez, no mod, both stamina and tech maps too since if you don't consistently farm the PP decay would make you fall from leaderboards and consistency + skill diversity would actually finally be represented in the PP system which currently they are not. And that is THE ONLY way you could make a system that would actually translate PP into tourney skillsets. However a system like that is extremely harsh and grindy, so you can imagine 99.9% of the community would just flood peppy with complaints of them losing pp and it would never actually be implemented, we already see just how fragile the community is even to very well deserved pp rebalances the second their overinflated pp maps get struck down, so now imagine a system that actually won't allow you to cheat through, yeah ain't no way that the majority of the community won't just quit LOL But your point definitely highlights that if the prize money was bigger more people would in fact transition to tourney skillsets instead of wanting to be #1, which opens an entirely new debate, I'm just here to say that money still isn't the ultimate motivation, if someone reaches #1 or becomes the best osu! tourney player simply because they want to be #1 or the best osu! tourney player no matter what you do you won't be able to give them motivation once they reached that goal. The only people that would reach that goal and still push harder are people that look at osu! as a craft and an art and want to consistently improve just for the sake of improvement, but we're yet to see such a player emerge without them burning out and quitting lol
Jakads has been first for at last 4 or 5 Years at this point. Hey play very very few times and when he saw that he got second he just played 2 3 maps and regained first. Mania is absolutely dominated at this point by jakads

He's just too good for the current meta with the current pp system, much like the Cookiezi of 2013, and it's going to be difficult for him to enjoy the game at this point.
Not really. Cookiezi was like the best overall player back then in terms of all skillsets, as a byproduct of him not playing for rank but fucking around. Not trying to discredit mrekk or anything, but the meta is DT, and that's what he almost exclusively plays as a result.

Honestly being number 1 at anything remotely competitive by a considerable margin really sucks. Unless you have a really clear goal that you can then go for you just get bored or worse just quit outright. On the flipside though being 2nd or under can be one of or probably the best places some one can be. You always have some one you can try to beat and friendly rivalry is probably the most common and effective way to stay motivated on improving. On top of all that the higher up you go the smaller and close-knitted the community is thus you can make a lot of friends with at least 1 similar interest.

I mean its all dandy. But at some point you have to quit. I used to play tournaments local on cod2 and cod4 where the price pool was always 250-500e 10 teams with 5 players per team. Every 2 weeks we had a huge tournament in my city many people from different cities would come to play it would last for 5 days because it was call of duty 2 and 4 tournament . That was around 2007 till 2011 people stopped doing huge tournaments because it wasnt fun anymore we moved to 2 tournaments per month. The price pool was still around 250 to 500e depends how many teams join. Later in 2014 there was a little bit bigger tournament in a different city it had 2k price pool. But i kinda stopped playing tournaments too much of a trouble. 5 day would be like 50e per person just for motel soo yea it became expensive because we didnt had any sponsorships.
mrekk is the type of person to joke about getting a 1.6pp play and then accidentally get it a week later off stream as his first play of the day, then post about it on twitter as a joke
