    They're playing so fast it looks like the film was sped up but you can tell it wasn't because the people in background are moving normal speed. Phenomenal musicians.

    Sweet Jesus in Heaven! They don't even give the audience enough time to applaud between earth-shattering solos! If all bluegrass were this good, it would break a lot of stereo-types for us mountain folk.

      drockkclapton will Amen to that apparently Bluegrass has this big stigma or it when people ask me what I like for music and I tell him Bluegrass and say what the hell is that well I would rather refer them to this

      True Bluegrass used to be good-all the originators have passed, just like the Blues originators. At best, only interpreters' now. Some listenable, most not or impossible... dreadful.All genres now are 'interpreters'.

    That number blows me away . . . They were all great - and they knew it. You didn't play with Bill Monroe unless you were the best.

    Yes, the great Bobby Hicks AND Charlie Cline on twin-fiddles. Carlos Brock on gtr and Ernie Newton on bass. Of course, Bill on mando and one of his great numbers. But the real showcase here is JACKIE PHELPS on 5-string banjo, of all things, and playing "Scruggs-style" with TWO fingers, NOT THREE!!

    • @charleshaynie5727
      @charleshaynie5727 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Nick Hornbuckle the banjo player for John Reischman and the Jaybirds plays similarly with two fingers. Apparently his middle finger isn't up to the task so he does it with two as did Jackie Phelps here.

      My question was fiddle players..bobby hicks and Charlie cline...2 greats..I guess time was 1957..ronoake was recited 1955..rjones.

    That's Bobby Hicks from Newton NC on fiddle(left side). His claim to fame later on was being a member of the Bluegrass Album Band which included Tony Rice, J.D. Crow, Doyle Lawson, and Jerry Douglas. He is now 80 yrs. young and still sounds great.

    Saw Bill in Dallas, 1991ish. They started late at a club and Bill was PUNK. He'd walk over and nudge a guy while they played. Oh, and the Dixie Chicks opened for him, but headed to Nashville that week!

    • @dannyc1174
      @dannyc1174 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm sorry, Donna, but, no, that is most definitely Jackie Phelps on banjo playing the way he did it - TWO finger (not three) but still a "Scruggs-style" sound. Jackie was a great 2-finger guitar player (either rhythm or "Merle Travis-style" lead) and played guitar for Bill, both on stage and on some recordings.

      Donna, sorry to disappoint you, this is Jackie Phelps. Look at some of the Flatt & Scruggs TV shows to see Stringbean (David Akeman), quite a different look. He was indeed Monroe's first banjo player (before Scruggs) but that was in the WWII years, this clip is from the 1950s

    • @NickDanger3215
      @NickDanger3215 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I concur, that's Jackie Phelps, a future star on Hee Haw, slapping his leg when Jimmy Riddle did he eephin'

    • @Mandolin1944
      @Mandolin1944 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Donna Wheeler That is incorrect that is not Stringbean on playing the banjo. First String played clawhammer style -- this is two finger picking, and Second and most important this recording is from 1954 and Stringbean was a Bluegrass Boy 10 years earlier, finally Stringbean was taller then Bill.

  • @donnawheeler1716
    @donnawheeler1716 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I disagree! He certainly looks like Akeman.

    • @Bascomblodge

      Donna, read Tom Ewing's book on Bill Monroe. He verifies it is Phelps.
