Aside from the musical density, there are many memorable lyrics. "I must plummet boldly forward, " "how many is god, is god quite a few, just sitting around there, with nothing to do?"

When I met Frank @ 1980 I said, "Frank, I think Your best album is Studio Tan". He really didn't react. Studio Tan is so musically dense and i don't mean stupid.

Zappa in this album made a singular composition between contemporary synphonic music like Stravinsky, music similar cartoons and melted for another particular explorations and narrative movies. Excellent!

A twenty-minute epic music/poem, catchy pop tune, orchestrated piece, and some jazz. All he needed to include was the bathroom sink, and he'd have everything. Ah, but that was on Waka Jawaka. My bad.

You all realize that Frank did not release this, Sleep Dirt or Orchestral Favourites, Warners did. Frank recorded a huge multi disc set called Lather but the company cut it into pieces with Zappa In New York also a part of the original whole. It was originally played on radio with Zappa in attendance saying record this so you will get the full impact of what I am intending and it showed up as a bootleg box now very rare, then many years later, RYKO finally put all the pieces back together and released it on CD for the first time ever as Frank intended - check it out.

Knowing now a lot of historic details, it's cool observing the refinement of the compositions, and the expanding of parts and personnel. And the tones. His guitar tone and the wah wah. Now that we know he had a bunch of sicko gear he designed himself, like EQ actually in the guitar so he could have this unequaled presence in the mids. And the wah, REDUNZL vis a vis Black Napkins on Zoot Allures. It kept getting more refined. And Black Napkins is a small ensemble, this is a freaking rock orchestra. Didn't matter which, it's all fantastic. Love that wah, it's just awful in it's beastly electronic presence, especially on Black Napkins. The howling buzz of ranges.

Agreed! This was my 2nd Frank album I owned, the 1st being Apostrophe. I was in the 7th or 8th grade, and this 'JAZZ' album went right to my hard drive. I can't explain why something so unprecedented sounded so familiar and comfortable to me, but it did! I specifically searched here to see if it might be on TH-cam, knowing that a true Frank fan would have this uploaded. The 2 sides of the album were so conceptually different, when I first played the album I thought the music center in my head was going to have an explosive braingasm when I flipped the record over. I'm in my 50s and since those olden days I still find myself singing phrases from this at fitting times. "...the nocturnal gregarious wild swine," "Who is making those new brown clouds," "Big Swifty and Associates...Trend Mongers," "Better ask a philostopher and see what he says" are all things I STILL here myself quoting,
