After listening to this song a bit I sort of came up with the interpretation that it's not exactly Alfred going crazy but more like a reflection of him simply 'waking up'. Taking the idea of an earlier comment that the woman he's holding could be 'Justice' herself, perhaps it's the death of his own preconceived notion of what justice is. The mask was the front he put up that told him everything was fine, that he's a 'hero' and all that. Over the years though, his time as a nation have shown him just how cruel the world really is and how nothing really is fair. The lyrics mention destroying 'someone else's sense of justice' and 'laughing at liars and hypocrites'. Many interpret it as him no longer wanting to be a beacon of justice, but I believe it's him wanting to break everyone else's preconceived notions of what justice is. Because really, for all it's unfairness, many have interpreted their own actions as 'justifiable'. He sees them as hypocrites, and wants to break that, to seize a greater future by ending all these illusions. Perhaps he's still taken a darker turn here, but with good if rather cynical intentions.
