  • On December 13, 2018, I was a guest on Femsplainers with Christina Hoff Sommers and Danielle Crittenden. We discussed, among other topics, the secrets of a long marriage, the problems with dating apps, how to handle a belligerent toddler, and the motivation of my radical feminist critics.
    Femsplainers (femsplainers.com/) is “the gossipy, smart, witty conversation you’d have if all of your girlfriends (and some of your guy friends too!) were experts on the hot topics of the moment. High spirited and high minded, we don’t argue or whine but seek to get to the heart of the matter, over cocktails (or wine).” We taped in front of a live audience at AEI, the American Enterprise Institute (www.aei.org/
    Ms. Hoff Sommers is the author of Who Stole Feminism? (amzn.to/2GJnkR4) and The War Against Boys (amzn.to/2SeuYo5) (a NY Times Notable Book of the Year) as well as Freedom Feminism (amzn.to/2Sfrd1B) , One Nation Under Therapy (amzn.to/2rNABOe) (with Dr. S. Satel), and The Science on Women in Science (amzn.to/2RaZyS1). She is resident scholar at AEI, studying the politics of gender and feminism, as well as free expression, due process, and the preservation of liberty in the academy. She has written for The Journal of Philosophy, The New England Journal of Medicine, The Wall Street Journal, The NY Times, The Washington Post, The New Republic, Slate, The Daily Beast, and The Atlantic, and is host of the popular video blog, The Factual Feminist.
    Ms. Crittenden is the author of What Our Mothers Didn’t Tell Us (amzn.to/2BBtzAC), a novel, AmandaBright@Home (amzn.to/2Lwr33c) (the first modern work of fiction serialized in the Wall Street Journal) and a cookbook, From a Polish Country House Kitchen (amzn.to/2Ra1H0... Pulitzer-prize winner Anne Applebaum). She is a contributing editor to the Huffington Post, and has published in the Wall Street Journal, the NY Times, the Washington Post, and the Daily Telegraph. A former columnist for the New York Post, Ms. Crittendon has appeared on NBC’s Today show as well as CSPAN, MSNBC, PBS, CNN, and NPR.

      Christina Sommers is the feminist we need, though probably not the one we entirely deserve. If only teenage girls/young women would even be WILLING to listen to her. Very empowering and rational. She deserves more attention, look her up.

      Abdulhakeem Sanni - that’s awesome, he’s done the same for me. I’m currently reading his book 12 rules for life and I love it. And I’ve never been a big reader. I can count the amount of books that I’ve read start to finish on both hands. I feel like Jordan Peterson speaks to everyone, because the things he says are TRUTHS. Truths in the sense that he tells us, and reinforces these truths, truths that we all know and feel deep down inside. These human, sometime primal truths that everyone feels but not everyone will, or wants to admit. Also he understands how dangerous ideology’s can be and does not like radicals of any kind.

      The name makes a lot of sense, mansplaining is the negative view of a man explaining even if he is correct. Just a reason to ignore arguments. Femsplaining is her taking this derogative term and applying it to them, that a sex explaining something shouldn't be something bad, and thinking otherwise is absolutely sexist. probably when you fall into the trap of only engaging with one source or one type of source and when you hear dissenting opinion it makes no sense with 99% of the other information you have perceived and interpreted as closer to the truth. People like that really are in a trap. Not only are they 'forced' by their habits to get angry when they start hearing or thinking such blasphemy and have an almost irresistible urge to stop listening and thinking, but they also, probably without noticing it, add on their own assumptions about him and his message. NOT ONLY THAT, but there's probably a sea of slander and lies about him in whatever type of source they trust, thus reducing the chances of listening to him even more
      At that point the only thing that can help them is a challenge in the form of an honest experience or a very well-timed and well-articulated message that they received in a time where their mind wasn't in defense mode.

      I think Jordan Peterson has a very well-developed and complete view of society, our place in it, and the pathologies that people are suffering from, but that doesn't make him correct to-for lack of a better term-"oppose" nihilism. It's clear that he has a distaste for the concept and thinks it's responsible for many of our ills, but he can't do much to dispel the notion (or should I say fact) that outside our biological context, the Cosmos at large is indifferent to our presence in it. It's true that we have values instilled in us by our biology, but it's also true that when viewed from outside, none of the things we care about matters in any objective sense. Nihilism is a conceptual inevitability, and I think it makes more sense to come to terms with it rather than to try to obscure it with flowery philosophy.

Lately society kind of makes it seem like it's for entertainment but at the same time that it's dangerous/ important enough that the state must be involved "in every step" (like, unnaturally). • @eddiesanchez1899
      @eddiesanchez1899 5 ปีที่แล้ว +95

      yeehaw Now who’s being cringey? The point of my original comment was to point out the disparity between the types of people who actually care about equality, as opposed to the obnoxious 3rd wave campus feminist types. The problem is that both groups of people call themselves “feminists”, so name alone is no longer a good distinction. Rather, the term “egalitarian” would be a better word to use than “feminist”, to describe the former group, as the latter have largely co-opted the term “feminist”. If you would have read my original comment more carefully, you would have noticed I was specifically referring to Ms. Hoff Sommer’s brand of feminism as the more rational, egalitarian type and I said I think that this is what the word “feminism” is supposed to describe. While Ms. Hoff Sommers certainly seems to describe the *denotation* of the word “feminist”, the *connotation* of the word tends to conjure up the image of the “Big Red” type. A few of these I have personally met and don’t care for. My advice to you would be to use the word “egalitarian”, rather than feminist, which roughly means the same on paper, but is a more accurate definition of what you are describing and does not carry the cultural baggage of the term “feminist”.

    “Women are more interested in people and Men are more interested in things” makes perfect sense to me from an evolutionary standpoint. Women were tasked with looking after the children and each other, so traits like care and compassion would be desirable. Men were tasked with hunting and processing the kill, so weapons and tools would have been absolutely essential. These traits are no less essential today for the continuation of our species.

    • @boneybone8123
      @boneybone8123 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That might sound like what an evolutionary standpoint is but in actuality, it is not. The quote you just used refers to the interest of people regarding possessions not personality traits or abilities. Overly simplifying the division of tasks between sexes as you put it is prone to lead the result of analysis or statistics erroneous. Care or compassion for instance, is highly relevant and required trait between male members of a hunting party in both the training and actual operation stages. Using of tools and weapons is also essential for females in the tribes in different situations. Males hunting and females taking care of children comes a lot later in the history of human beings and that is just a stylized version of a misunderstood data regarding history. Most artifacts and archeological findings indicate hunter gatherers were a lot more diverse in operations in their tribes, regarding workforce and gender roles. This is why it is not a valid evolutionary standpoint. As a species, we can not definitively achieve continuation while the environment, earthly or celestial is unpredictable and non-sustainable by our external manipulations.

      The reason some folk hate him is that his simple message of "you're not a victim, you can improve yourself" opposes the very basis of their ideology - they imagine there is an evil, oppressive patriarchy. They try to corral all the different kinds of oppressed victim into a single leftist movement to create a powerbase. Peterson dismantles the "identity politics" that is their main weapon in this endevour. He espouses the principal of individual freedom over group rights. He also points out the contradictions in victim politics such as Trans Women vs Feminists.
      Now, since I have been watching videos of Peterson not for so very long, about 3 months, I am equipped with the thinking that picks apart the kind of Leftist dogma which is usually based on the three cornerstones of social justice, equity and inclusion. I'm just an average Joe and I believe there must be hundreds of thousands like me who have been educated by Peterson, not bullied nor brainwashed.
      The Left are absolutely outraged at Peterson's betrayal of their millions of victims and that is where the hatred comes from - not, in general from the "victims" themselves, rather from their "champions". You'd think that with so many Leftist college professors, they'd be able to win the argument without the need to resort to hatefulness.

There are a lot social gender roles that are pushed on to women and men. Equality of opportunity is difficult to achieve in these countries due to many reasons that trascend the concepts of just genders and sexes, but nonetheless one of the results is that there is a lot of pressure on what is expected of you bc of your sex. Also, there is a lot of violence bc of individualism and how unstable the countries are. I would say that the fight of feminism has more ground in latinamerica bc of thede reasons. Pursuing Equality of opportunity is something needed. Even though there is no real oppression from the state, society c can be really agressive against the uncommon here, which creates a lot of intolerance and agresiveness.
      Still in last 10 years, radical feminism has been certainly increasing which I personaly find extremely unhelpful due to how it antagonizes part of the population and simplifies every problem by gender roles and oppression. And bc of how unstable these countries are, you can find A LOT of problems which can be simplified like this. But again, it isnt helpful if we want to find the root causes of it.

Have an actual talk with most females who identify as this, and we will talk about it logically as you should. With my first partner, I remembered him saying once that he doesn't see any connection between sex and love. That they are flat out unrelated. It shocked me because he was a pretty sensitive, thoughtful and tender guy. We lasted 9 years until it became apparent we were too fundamentally different afterall. In my next relationship, that boyfriend once wondered aloud about why our intimacy was so "mind blowing", and I said, "Well, maybe it's because we're in love." He replied with "Nnah, that's not it. I don't really connect sex and love at all."
    I feel that this shouldn't be normal. And yet you are almost shamed and certainly deemed trite and naive if you do associate the two things together in our current dating culture.
    Fuck that shit, I say. This attitude isn't good for people

      I think its beacuse sex has become such a casual thing in modern society that it often loses its meaning, hence why I would have liked to have waited until marriage. Sex isn't just physical its spiritual too, though if you aren't a spiritual person its hard to see it like that.

    • @Phoenix-oj8jw
      @Phoenix-oj8jw 5 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      Depends, im a man and i see it as connected. How could it not be? The idea of hooking up with someone id met for a few hours and know i will most likely never see again doesnt appeal to me at all actually. Its personal to everyone just like everyone has fetishes that dont make sense in a logical way. Maybe you just met men that werent that in to you or perhaps they were looking for ways in which they could be in a relationship with you and stil have other sexual partners by disconnecting sex from emotional attachment.
      Its also possilbe that men get hurt by women who either cheat on them or dont love them back and then they are forced to seperate sexual desire from emotional attachment because it is hard for a man to accept that the woman of their dreams doesnt feel the same way or has cheated on them with someone else. This has something to do with masculinity. If a mans wife cheats on him as a man i know that every other man will judge me constantly unless i have a dramatic break up and ruin any sort of relationship with this person forever. There is no room for how i actually feel about the situation in society, not unless i want to keep my job or social standing anyway. So in many ways its much more dangerous for a man to express his emotions than it is for a woman because in our heads the percieved conseuqeunces if it goes wrong are much worse. Similiarly, if a woman breaks up with a male the male very often comes out as worse in that scenario despite the fact he may not have done anything wrong. Also society makes a push thats its almost weird to not be on tinder hooking up with people which is strange when feminism also tries to bring value to women but at the same time says they should be free to objectify themselves to men if they want to. Or to hook up with men for nothing but sex... thats a strange double standard in the west.

    • @konroh2
      @konroh2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      We can point to many historical proofs that show sex and love are connected. But we can also look to a book 3000 years old called "Song of Solomon." If you don't know it, it's one of the books of the Bible.

      Love makes sex ideal because you aren’t just their for your own satisfaction, you’re there to make sure that two people have a wonderful engaging time including kisses and cuddles...

    • @stadiasong4615
      @stadiasong4615 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I mean yes and no, at least from my perspective. Because I might want to keep coming back for sex, but I would also want to be certain a feeling of love was being fostered within me if I was going to admit to it, because it just seems too serious of an emotion to use otherwise. It's a bit of a game honestly, but done compassionately I think. Because if I tell someone I love them when I don't and keep having sex with them I'm kind of a psychopath for that shit, and if I'm not actually a psychopath it'll probably come back to haunt me. So I play a game of redefining terms to use as a negotiation strategy for my relationship and sort things out honestly as I go, but don't put all my cards on the table unless I'm sure I know how I feel. Once I know how I feel I can put all my cards on the table because playing games at that point is a bad idea, but I shouldn't try to deal a false hand while playing games either, so I disagree with the idea that having sex will definitely be connected to love at some point because I actually don't know if I'm in love.
      I've also only been in 1 relationship ever, and I broke it off after 4 months because I realized I didn't really like her all that much, so I'm no relationship expert. I've decided the best time to invest in a relationship is when I can afford one and since school and eating costs about as much as a girlfriend does I still kind of feel like I'm in one anyways.

    Men and women are naturally different and have different interests in general.
    EVERYBODY knows this innately and behaves accordingly. It's obvious to anybody who exists in the real world. Even children.
    Yet it's become a controversial or debatable topic suddenly.
    It is very strange. 🤔

      It was once "blindingly obvious" that some races were superior to others and so on. Always ask for evidence. If the claim is true then finding it should be easy.

      @@rkvktmen I don't think that's an equal comparison at all. Nor historically accurate beyond being used in certain places and times to justify evil behaviour. Point taken though.
      There's nothing wrong with seeking evidence or researching something. Again just find it weird that this is a contentious debate. Personal opinion.

      No, you're absolutely right but no one will admit it. they wont think about it long enough to....
      The reason it was obvious then and no longer obvious now is because our interactions have drastically changed. everyone is mentally and emotionally removed from the physical world. they use things like social anxiety as a reason to hide behind a screen rather than try to overcome their irrational fears and their ability to overthink every little situation.
      that's why texting is so much easier than face to face conversations... someone might disagree with you!! you might upset them! you can't "block" someone if they are standing right in front of you. you actually have to explain yourself without googling facts to support your opinions.
      soooooo stressful! so yes.... more people need these studies so they can understand the opposite genders of their own species. getting to know an individual and what makes them tick is just too much work.
      It's so much easier to get that dopamine injection from social media than to actually BE social. It is only going to get worse too.. todays children are going to be the end of society as we know it if we don't recognize this disease... I came to that conclusion while watching kids and their parents at a very popular playground. the kids were having fun, calling for their parents attention and praise - only to be ignored over a cell phone. EVERY parent - and i mean this.... every damned one of them- was staring at a phone. I feel like I was the only one actually observing the playground. one guy was holding his three year olds hand, walking along and staring at his phone. she stumbled and he dragged her across the concrete sidewalk until she screamed. then he lifted her up onto her feet - she was still screaming. he sorta glanced at her, set her on a bench, then went back to the phone.
      it was like a scene from a horror film. everyone was a zombie. i had to wonder what life is like at home where everyone has their own tablets, computers, phones, video games etc..... knowing how addictive they are, and how young children are being exposed to something that is nothing but instant gratification and no physical or emotional interaction... well....... what IS the future going to be like?
      You think it's bad now??

      I find it strange as well. The trend through human history is to believe on bias and emotional reasons, isn't it? If we're moving towards requiring data, study, and intellectual rigor for our beliefs, we're moving towards real progress.

    I don’t know if Dr. Peterson is even aware of the comments on these videos but I just though it would be interesting to say I went to the book store today to get 12 rules and they were sold out, and apparently they’ve been sold out frequently. So I just though it’s a good example of how many people are being influenced by him, and how much impact he really has

      I went to a book store in a good sized city so it wasn’t a tiny book store. I don’t really use online shopping.

      Literally just ordered a copy of it from Amazon 2 minutes ago. Was almost 50% off retail price as well. I'm sure JBP would be happy for me that I got such a great deal on it. Now, to meet up or send it to him with return postage to get it signed.

      @@erikbell1723 It sure is but I prefer to read as it's quite easy to get distracted listening to something rather than reading it, for me personally anyway. I read it, it sticks, I listen to someone read it to me, I have to go back a listen several times before I actually retain it.
      Edit: Furthermore, seeing the actual tome on a bookcase seems so much more.......real or concrete. It's easy to forget you have an audiobook, not so much with a physical copy that one can touch, feel and see at all times. Hell, I often forget I even have an Audible account.
