I'm a Greenpoint native. It's disheartening to see the changes. But l'm sure when my family moved there in the late 40s the prior year inhabitants weren't happy either. Change is constant, especially in NYC. I do wish things stayed the same but unfortunately, life isn't that convenient.

@@shaylabritton319 l respect your position but unfortunately our nation was not founded on that premise. It was founded on a survival of the fittest, profit over morality paradigm. That's why the natives have been displaced and nearly ethnically cleansed and why Africans have been enslaved and marginalized for most of their existence in the US. I never really understood the idea of talking/educating oneself about gentrification, but still actively participating in it? Perhaps I misunderstood that segment, but it seems that many well-off millennials talk about gentrification, the importance of being educated on the subject matter, and the like, but still actively partake in it. Yes, I will never minimize the importance of education, but if you're not going to move out of your super nice and surprisingly affordable place...isn't it all essentially pointless? By no means am I trying to act like a saint because truth is, if I found a nice place in a gentrified area that was surprisingly affordable, I'd probably be tempted to move in. It just feels like learning about the importance of recycling, carbon emissions, etc, but still taking part in the most problematic forms of air, water, etc. pollution. I mean, great, you're educated, but...still contributing to the problem. A big portion of said problem.
**Please note, this is by no means a personal attack on Jess, but more about how we as a collective seem to be approaching this particular subject matter.

genuine question - are you personally aware of how someone could totally avoid participating in gentrification in this situation? Has anyone solved that issue? It's not as easy to avoid as one-use plastic etc. so that's not reaaally a comparable analogy I don't think. Also, in this case, she mentioned that she aims to become more educated *so that* she can then understand how she can contribute less to the problem. It seems to me that you're suggesting that ignorance and silence is preferable to having an open conversation about gentrification - I just do not believe that that is the best way forward. It is a hugely nuanced topic so I don't think we can straightforwardly say anyone who contributes in any way to gentrification cannot talk about it.

Elena! I can't thank you enough for this video! It served as an amazing reminder of how refreshing it is to be original and unique. I live in a small town that has never felt like home, where its people are mainly obsessed with instagram and other pointless stuff. It gives me life and so much hope to see people being themselves and expressing their soul in their own, unique way! Jess and her apartment were stunning & the vibes were sooo cool and inspiring!

Beautiful apartment! Thank you for sharing!
One thing I've thought about related to gentrification in Chicago (where I lived for a long time) and probably other cities as well is that the young, recently graduated people who are gentrifying neighborhoods are seeking places with public transit and high walkability, and unfortunately those kinds of places are extremely limited in the United States. If we want to attract young people to a wider swath of neighborhoods and prevent pushing out communities who have lived in places for a long time, we need more public transit and more appealing urban planning. Basically, new neighborhoods and new construction need to be better and public transit needs to be hugely expanded.

Beautiful apartment and well put together video. There is a add on to the history. The previous polish population has dropped from 75 percent to 10 percent due to skyrocketing rent prices. many moved to queens and some left America to return to Europe. Gentrification strikes again. Also, the previous working class residents were once plagued with dangerous chemical leaks from local industrial plants. Once this was eventually cleaned there was a huge surge in construction and investment in the area. Thus the older residents were priced out and many had to leave and the newer, more affluent residents moved into a now safer area. It happens over and over. The poor are left to suffer. The rich get all the benefits.
