  • Jo no Mai in the key "Banshiki" - (with Taiko)
    盤渉序ノ舞
Jo no Mai is a type of very quiet, elegant dance in Noh often danced by the shites playing beautiful women, tree spirits and old men in sanbanme mono.
Banshiki is a tone of the flute used in Noh. It used to be one of the six tones of gagaku, traditional Japanese court music, which used the banshiki as the main tone in the mode, similar to a B note in Western music. However, as the Noh flute cannot be tuned, the sound of each flute is slightly different, and the tone is determined by how each of the seven finger holes are opened. Specifically, the ohshiki is a melody formed starting from a low sound, ending with the sixth hole opened all the way. Ohshiki is the standard tone for the flute, one tone lower than Banshiki, although Banshiki may also be used for some hayashigoto, such as those where the music is the main part, in plays such as Hayamai, Banshiki-Jonomai and Banshiki-Gaku.
Some Noh plays which has "Jo no Mai" has a special direction. In the Special direction, instead of ordinary Jo no Mai, Banshiki-Jonomai is danced. "Hagoromo-Saishiki" is one of them. The key of flute is changed to Banshiki after Oroshi of part 1.
