Thank you! It was a really fun build, I'm looking forward to making many more chairs. I think this is a good style to learn that opes on, hope your build goes well!
Hello Duncan, I just can across your channel and wanted to let you know this is a wonderful and informative video series. Thank you for sharing, I’m new to woodworking and intend to work towards building chairs. Great work, the chair turned out beautiful.
Thanks Mark! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I had been wanting to make a chair for a long time before jumping in to make this one, and it has been one of the most enjoyable projects I've done to date. I've definitely have fallen down the chair rabbit hole and am part way through making a set of four simple dining chairs now. Best of luck on your woodworking journey!
Thanks! I know need at least four for the dining table (although might go with a simpler design for those). I am pleasantly surprised with how comfy this one is, might just end up being a reading chair/lounging chair.
Thank you! Definitely excited to try and document some more projects like this. Really stoked with how this chair came out, looking forward to more chair making in my future.
gorgeous work. I know your hands were sore after using that little radiused plane to carve the seat 😂 respect for getting the job done using the tools at hand. subbed
Thank you! Appreciate you checking out the video. This project was a major hand workout for sure and got a fair few blisters using that radius plane. Now I just need to make sure to build another chair soon so my hands don't get too soft/weak before the next one! (or maybe I could get some better tools for the job)
@@noahbwoodworks Yeah absolutely. Since this was my first chair I was reluctant to buy a bunch of tools since I was not sure if I'd want to make more chairs. However I hope to be making many more so will definitely be picking up a few tools to help make the process better (an inshave probably being near the top of the list).
Thank you! It was a really fun project. I followed the plans for the book on page 465 for the major measurements like rake/splay of the legs and then made a lot of little changes from there.
Great build. Couple of questions - what woods did you use? Spindles and arms seemed to be white oak. Maple for the seat? Also, what plane did you use for shaping the top of seat? Great video series.
Thank you! Appreciate you taking the time to watch and glad you liked the build. The seat and the backrest are ambrosia maple (which is cheap and easy to find in thick stock around me) and the undercarriage, short sticks, and arm are all red oak (I spent quite a bit of time trying to find some boards that didn't have as much of the red color to them though so they are pretty light). The plane I used is the HNT Gordon radius plane, which worked well for the process but was quite slow. In the future I'll probably get a scorp/inshave for the roughing out and use the radius plane and or a travisher for the fine tuning.
Thank you! Fortunately I was able to get most of the seat pretty well finished with the scraper and it only needed a little sanding. The part that took the most sanding was the transition from the edge of the seat to the saddle, which probably took an hour of sanding after I did as much as I could with the plane/scraper.
@@ellinwoodworks sorry, I meant saddling, as in the whole shaping process. I'm gonna attempt a Welsh stick chair once I finish up a few projects, I'm trying to see what I'm in for!
@@lukedeaton Sorry that was my bad, misread saddling. It took me probably three hours all together. I only had the radius plane for the roughing out, but I think it would have gone a lot faster if I had a scorp for the initial roughing and a travisher instead of the radius plane for some fine tuning (although in the future I'm sure I'll be happy to have both a travisher and the radius plane). It was one of the steps in the process I was a little unsure about how it would go, but once I got started and just slowly carving out the shape it went pretty well. Hope your chair build goes well!
I love the videos, love the style, and love the aesthetic of just watching the craftsmanship. Two items of (hopefully) constructive criticism: Font on text is way too small. Old eyes and an iPhone…please help a guy out! Text is on screen for too brief a time (insert old eyes and iPhone comment here). Constantly having to back up to read. Thanks and good luck. I hope your channel grows and becomes successful!
Thanks for watching Brian and glad you enjoy the videos. I appreciate the feedback, I had only watched back the edited videos on my computer to check the text size etc, but didn't think about how it would look on a phone (but I can see how it would be too small on there).
Absolutely beautiful captains chair. Exactly the one I want to make, you’ve set the standard on how to make one.

so beautiful!! for your first chair, you absolutely knocked it out of the park.
Thank you!! I'm really stoked with how it came out.

Thanks Hunter! I'm really pleased with how it came out.

Awesome chair! Did you follow the plans out of Chris Schwarz “The Stick Chair Book” or come up with them on your own?

How long did saddling the seat take? Lovely work, well done
