I was stationed at the Yard from 65 to 67 when the three BBs were there (Iowa, Wisconsin, New Jersey) all wrapped up. NJ came to life in 68 and I was invited to attend the re-commissioning...quite an experience. There were all types there at the time most having seen duty in WWII. Quite a history.

@@JackieMcGruffster Thanks. The Navy has been getting rid of older hulls to shed even the small budgets these require for monitoring. My last ship, Nassau (LHA 4) was dragged out of the reserve fleet in Beaumont Texas for that last voyage to the scrapper in Brownsville TX. She arrived last week. She was decommissioned here in Norfolk VA, 31 March 2011 after 32 very active years.
I would not be surprised to hear that John F Kennedy (CV 67) will make that final voyage before long. Kitty Hawk (CV 63) is supposed to go sometime this year, or so I heard.

Not an easy answer to that. Its not just about how old the ship is but also what has been dissassembled etc. But sure, most of them gotta go through a major overhaul
and upgrade. Are the ships old enough and major work on hull is required etc it can actually be very troublesome to accumulate enough skilled workers to get it done-
that was a major issue with the Iowa-class battleships back in the day
