I don't know. Maybe it's because there's a chemical linked to infertility and abnormal fetal development called chlormequat that some countries like China still spray on their crops. And several months ago, excessive amounts of it were detected in Cheerios and other oat products sold in the US by General Mills.

Who knew endocrine disruptors could interfere with fetal development, and cause problems with conceiving and successfully carrying a pregnancy? And of course, if it interferes with fetal development, those Cheerios you give your baby to tide them over until dinner probably aren't doing them any favors, either.
Chlormequat is banned in the US for agriculture, though flower growers can still buy it.
