Here's a pretty awful additional fact about Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle's cancellation:
The show WAS greenlit for 2 full seasons, but halfway through season 2 Nickelodeon abruptly cut it off. Then they gave the crew *6 weeks* to write the final *4 episodes* of season 2. According to the creators, they are usually given *12 weeks* to write *1 episode.* They were basically given a quarter of the time they needed for the finale, not even factoring in that they had to shorten everything up considerably to make up for all that time they lost with the latter half of season 2 being cut.
Apparently the writers were basically pumping out scripts daily throughout those 6 weeks just to get the story in a decent shape. The fact that the finale came out as coherently as it did is a miracle.

Another thing I wanna mention about Rise is that the movie that came out a little while ago, had the fans hoping and begging for the crew behind the show to make more if the movie got popular enough. Trust me, I've seen the fans posting on Twitter telling others to watch the movie and rate it so that the crew will notice the popularity of the show. People WANTS this to be popular, but it looks like it might get the short end of the stick.

The fact that the only recent praise comes from a game they didn’t make (Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl) speaks for itself. And even then, they basically rushed the devs making that game, causing the hype for it to die down and for them to lose potential fans. This isn’t the first time either, the Battle For Bikini Bottom remake was also rushed by Nick and had a ton of bugs and glitches that made it worse than the original.
    Also they started making NFT’s

I bought the Switch version of the BFBB remake and in the middle of playing it suddenly had an error that basically said the save was corrupted forcing me to start from scratch and at that point despite enjoying the game until then I basically just gave up, uninstalled the game, and then got the pc version instead and to this day it has stayed deleted from my Switch with only the icon on the home screen as a reminder.

I want to better elaborate without making my original comment thread a paragraph. Nick All Star Brawl was not created by Nick. Nick had to approach Ludiosity: A small indie team notable for making a Smash Bros-like game known as Slap City. Whilst Ludosity was happy to work on the game, Nick basically rushed them by giving them only a year and half to make the game. The game started development in early 2020 and released late 2021. The game received a lot of praise at first, not just due to easy meme potiential, but because the game featured rollback (Which basically removes input delay) While Smash Ultimate was known for having mediocre online.
Then the game launched… Better online is all All Star Brawl has going for it. The game released with no voice acting from it’s characters, the roster felt heavily incomplete, there was only one unique side mode, no alternate costumes for characters, and no items. The animations also look mindlessly rough and stiff. In spite of all the massive glaring flaws, the game is 50.00$ regularly. The game is nearly asking full priced when it’s incredibly mediocre. They would release voice acting later on, but by that time, people really didn’t care about the game. The game died in a week after launch, and it was mainly due to Nick rushing the devs and jacking up the price. Doesn’t help that now we have Multiversus, another Indie Smash Bros game that has everything Nick All Stars didn’t and it’s free. In other words, you may as well just get Multiversus. Or if you only have a Switch, Smash Ultimate. Because while Smash is 60$ you’re absolutely getting your money’s worth as both the game and it’s DLC passes are jack packed with content.
My main takeaway from all this is that Nick was way to damn greedy. They didn’t care about a quality fighting game, they saw Smash Bros. Ultimate was popular amongst kids, and knew they would beg their parents for the game because Spongebob was on the boxart.

    • @tjh6678
      @tjh6678 2 ปีที่แล้ว +33

To add to this, when Nick was involved in NASB's development, it was only for mind-numbingly stupid, restrictive mandates like characters not being aloud to have simple color swap alts or have original dialouge/basic interactions for the arcade mode that aren't just shoehorned quotes from the shows. These same mandates also became hypocritical (in addition to stupid & restrictive), because a while later, a mobile Nick tennis game for Apple Arcade dropped & had polished graphics, a ton of fancy new outfits for characters, plus voice acting/new lines for the roster.
It's like they were deliberately trying to sabotage the damn game...
I say this as someone who bought the game at full price when it first dropped. It especially sucks because at the time, I was anticipating the game in the months leading up to it, laughing at the memes that spawned & it even gave me something to look forward to after I lost my dad to Covid. A Smash-style Nickelodeon fighter is such a genuinely banger concept, so to see it drop with below bare-minimum content & lose any momentum it had with the mainstream is just sad.

After talking with Mighty B! creator Eirk Wiese, he told me that the reason why his show and many others were canceled was because while working on the first season, one of Nick’s offices had a major restructure and not only did the new execs laid off much of the show’s staff including EP’s who helped bring shows like SpongeBob and FOP to life, but they also cut its advertising. Which led to the second season having their last bunch of episodes being broadcast *one year after they were finished* and moved around to different time slots. In other words, The Mighty B! was canceled because of a cooperate restructure.

After finally putting my Netflix account to use and recently giving Rise of the TMNT a chance, I can say I absolutely love it, I'm not a big Turtles guy, the most I consumed before Rise was keeping up with and enjoying 2 and a half seasons of 2012 but slowly losing track of the episodes and falling off watching. Even with that I did enjoy Rise a lot. Even before the Netflix binge when I caught episodes on Nick proper, I thought it was entertaining. The lovable characters, the fun action, the animation, the artstyle and backgrounds, the animation, the laid back tone with a mix of light serialization, the generally good comedy, *the animation sweet holy molly macoroni the animation.* There's at least one scene per episode I have to play back cause of the animation. This series definitely deserved at least a full season 2 and I feel genuinely bad for not realizing it till it was too late. I'm still not fully through season 1 but if the quality keeps on the consistent rise it currently has I know I won't be disappointed.

I think the example of television channels dropping good series because they think they won’t be successful which irks me the most wasn’t even related to animation. There’s this show I really used to dig on the SyFy channel called _Channel Zero: Candle Cove._

I'm not seeing many comments addressing Mr Meaty. Which I think should have been highlighted more because I still remember how terrifying that show was. But I get the sense that all the strong reactions to the show are due to being within a VERY specific age range when it first aired. The range i've narrowed it down to seems to be around ages 4-7 for peak traumatization. You get too much older than that, they consider it disturbing, but not terrifying. Too much younger, say someone born in 2004, they see it at an older age where again, not nearly as traumatizing. It's quite fascinating to be honest.

It uses actual kids as voice actors, much of the humor is dialogue-based, it can be down-to-earth but also dark and cynical and tackle tough topics, and who knows, maybe Nickelodeon will throw us a bone 25 years from now when the show is considered retro like they did with Hey Arnold in order to try to make us forget about everything else.

I can honestly forgive TMNT's departure to nicktoons, because even though it was removed from the main channel, it's clear they weren't going to let it die. Aside from the movie, there was a 24/7 Pluto TV chancel for the show, and it promoted heavily on Netflix. Even though new episodes were on a pay channel, I can forgive it because they gave consumers more options to watch, kind of like how Invader Zim and Teenage Robot were on DVD around their departure.

SpongeBob is the worst thing to ever happen to Nickelodeon, the shows popularity is so immense that hardly anything Nickelodeon makes can come close. As such Nickelodeon looses faith in their new shows before they can gain any momentum, cancel them, and try again only to do the same thing over and over again.

As someone who was a fan of Harvey Beaks, welcome to the Wayne, and a few of these other shows seen here. It’s always depressing getting reminded of how nick treated these shows. As someone who’s been casually watching nick cartoons from the late 90’s to this day, I grew up loathing the nicktoons network for this absolute reason. Almost to the point where watching a new animated series air on nick would have my automatic thoughts be of when nickelodeon will screw it over and put it on its infamous sister network. Till this very day I still get shocked that The loud house or it’s spin-off show Casagrandes somehow manage to avoid the nicktoons graveyard for as long as it did.(yes i know the latter was recently canceled but it’s currently has 5 episodes left and none them were planned to be on nicktoons as of the time I’m writing this).
With all that being said, I’m glad that you made this video essay. Some of these shows may not be as inspiring as others, but the ones that went under the radar definitely deserves to at least be recognized and have it’s story on how it got screwed over told.

A lot of this video was an awakening of memories of shows I watched because I was of the lucky few kids whose parents paid for the extra channels like Nicktoons and DisneyXD, which I see is a common sentiment based on a bunch of other comments down here. ie I actually... sort of remember the original miniseries for NFL Rush Zone and it was a different show than the following season (that I didn't even know existed until now). Sure it was still basically a giant commercial for football but the story was more focused on the main black kid helping the mascots protect the megacores which before were just the team logos- like straight up just 3D printed logos- instead of footballs with the logos.
On Rise of the TMNT specifically, the day after the movie came out, there was a Twitch stream by Colin Stein with the crew behind the show and movie detailing a metric fuckton of behind-the-scenes stuff that happened with both, chronicled in a Twitter thread by @ enjoy_rottmnt (I can't link because TH-cam just be like that) since I have no idea if anyone archived the stream. There was a bunch of concept art and some cut scenes for the movie, but the show itself had way more in terms of what ended up being left out or changed.
Stuff like the Krang originally being the villains of S3; there were going to be 2 more Turtles that weren't saved by Splinter w/ one of them being a one-scene wonder from the S2 premiere; Spoiler Character and the Shredder originally going to have more screentime before S2 was cut in half, with said Spoiler spending time and bonding with the Turtles before their departure (iykyk); the crew wanted to have more episodes with the Mystic City (the underground yokai city) but Nickelodeon said "no" so a bunch of plot points kinda ended up going nowhere; the more comedic tone and 11min episodes also being because of Nick aiming for the kids but also they wanted the team to tell a more serialized story to appeal to older audiences.
Basically, quite a bit of behind-the-scenes nonsense happened because of Nickelodeon not being clear on what they wanted from the show on top of not giving the crew the full extent of freedom they probably needed. And also them axing the show because viewership or something.

For Rise of TMNT I'd have to give it to the 2012's version for the character design changes to give everyone some individuality, they're subtle but indeed difference each of the turtles, fun thing is it also had a certain amount of backlash due this, specially for the 3 toes feet design which was non-traditional. Rise took these subtle elements and put them on steroids, I'm honestly not a fan of the version, I dropped it like 5 episodes in I think and can't remember much of it but not agreeing on how beautiful the animation and composition are would be wrong. From all the versions this is the best looking one, super dynamic which also works with that "goofy" vive and such a shame for the fans of the version it got canceled :c hopefully their tv movie gives them a nice conclusion.

Making Fiends is my favorite out of all of these, it has the style of some old children's storybook, while also having a tinge of darkness to it like some of David Firth's work, it had so much potential that it just failed to reach because of Nick's absolute incompetence.
I'm hoping to god that a miracle happens like if 4Chan decided to just get off it's own ass for a bit a do a sort of Nicktoons jailbreak sort of thing for the hell of it, either buying back the rights to those shows themselves and giving them back to the respective creators, or forcing Nick to give those properties back to the creators by harming Nick's kid friendly image or some other thing that'll get them to listen. As someone growing up in the 2000s, my folks would flip-flop on owning a cable box. Some years, we had it, others, they'd decide out of the blue that it wasn't worth the money and we'd back to only having access to 23 or so channels. Because of this, while I always had consistent access to Nickelodeon, the same couldn't be said of Cartoon Network or NIcktoons. Though, I admit, as I got older, I actually preferred watching Nicktoons, despite its status as a "graveyard channel", since it typically had a wider range of shows playing as opposed to the main Nick channel, which, even as a kid, I knew was relying way too heavily on SpongeBob reruns.
Honestly, it's a shame, hearing about these creators working for Nick. From what I've heard of them throwing away every show that doesn't immediately outperform SpongeBob, they deserve to go under.

Nicktoons was honestly one of my favorite channels. It sucks that I was only in like 1st and 2nd grade when the channel was pumping out soooo many shows back to back. I can remember them and watching them but barely. They all just stood out so much it's been hard to forget. I was hoping to see things like Three delivery, Zero 3, and Kappa Mikey on the list but they didn't make the cut. If you were born in 2002 like me but still managed to watch a lot of the old cartoons it's because we were able to catch the reruns on nicktoons even the things nobody talks about like The X's, Wayside, El Tigre, Chalkzone
I wish the action shows got more spotlight in the public too. Like we got to see so many shows over here that would've never been on nick. Monsuno, Iron man, Wolverine and the X-men, Voltron Force, Dragonball Gt, Yugioh Zexal, I remember how hype I was when they started airing all the old power rangers.

1:36:55 This is certainly something Kingdom Hearts got wrong on multiple occasions, not having Sora, Donald, Goofy, Roxas, Luxord or Chirithy (in lieu of your silent OC) consistently point out the weirdness of the place and Alice being sidelined for the times she appears (in the cause of KHχ, it's not really her but a projection from the Book of Prophecies but I digress). IIRC, Dark Road was the only time this was done right but they spend such little time in any given world that it barely matters.

After a recent rewatch, I'm honestly AMAZED the show didn't get more episodes. The writing for the most part was on point, visual gags and humor were top tier, OST was great, and action, for a 2002 cartoon, is pretty servicable, and if the cartoon were to get a continuation/redo (FAITHFUL, please, not PPG 2016 shit) with modern animation to levels of TMNT, I think it would do great!
