University professors are out of touch. They haven't had contact with the "real" world in years, probably decades for some. Which in computer terms is an eternity, because everything changes so rapidly, it's like every few days something new comes out. They only offer a _broad_ spectrum of _general_ computing knowledge. If you're not interested in building websites, learning JavaScript is absolutely pointless. And if you ARE interested, there are so many web frameworks out there that they don't even _mention,_ let alone teach. 😐
I have a Bachelor's degree in something else and I can tell you with 100% certainty that over 95% people who graduate are complete idiots. Idiots with a diploma. They haven't learned anything. Employers immediately zoom in on the "Experience" section of the CV. And I mean IMMEDIATELY, it's not even funny how fast their eyes dart to that section, I was shocked when I saw that.
It's much better to study (on your own) specific things that you're interested in, and have a few projects that you can list on your resume and about which you can talk about at great length in an interview. You gain experience from doing that.
If you want a job, this is the way. Otherwise, the best you can expect is an internship... which at the end of the 6 months (or however long it is), it's not entirely clear if they would pick you (out of the rest of the internees) for a full-time contract.

Hello, degree is still valued. It’s other way to learn things: it has system that with self-education process you have to build yourself. It won’t get you to the top of the knowledge. Because university degree is designed to be understood and passed. But it still worth it (I would say more in the humanities than in the technical sciences).
Video courses are ok, but education need to have system to bring you to the best result.
And 42 is not about computer science;) it’s basically to train soft-skills of poor street boys to help them enter to corporate world. Don’t forget that in the very beginning it was charity project;)

the 42 school certificate is on par with a bachelors or masters degree now a days though. And in france it has already been recognized so by the government.
Also from the statistics that I’ve seen. 42 students get way more pay as a junior than someone who graduated uni or bachelor, atleast here in the Netherlands.

@@vkatasonov since Spain and Portugal are in the EU, I'd argue that it technically is even though it'd take some steps, if you go to France and ask the government there to validate your certficate from codam it'll be recognised by the EU as a masters or bachelors, then with that recognition, it'll server as an actual master or bachelor. I completely agree, but you still should get a degree at least if you are going the employment route:
People with degrees get more pay in every stage of the career.
The way to do it imo is: Learn hands on, build things and so on, then get into jobs that push you more and after 3-7 years you can just fly through a competency based degree like WGU in 6 months or less. Without losing a lot of time you will get the paper that will print money for you (your certificate).
Same thing for masters degree: get yoe in work and with that experience do a competency based masters degree. (This is higher (time) investment withlower return than the bachelors degree but can open doors for you)
