The edger I rented was really heating up the floor, to the point that the sandpaper was getting gummed up within about 30 seconds of replacing it. This was with the finer grits, after the old finish had already been removed. The gunk was not all the way in the center, nor all the way at the edge. It was about an inch wide, halfway to the edge of the paper. What do I need to do to make the paper last longer?
Are you sure all the old polish was removed? Because the only time your paper will get gummed up is if you are removing old polish from the floor. Otherwise if you have the old floor stripped down to bare wood then there should not be any issues
you should only light sand and buff the entire floor after the first one. Grit should be 20 up from what you sanded the floor with so if you sanded 60 go to 80 before first coat with a buffer not sanders. high end finished would be 80 before first coat with buffer 100 after first coat with buffer - 120 with buffer for 2-4 coat you can go to 150 for last coat but that's optional
If edges are lighter than the middle 50 grit lightly hand sand after scraping will make the grain take the darker therefore making a more evenly colored stain if we have say a wall with a darker uneven stain look we will hand sand the fresh stain with 80 grit and run back over what you've hand sanded and it allows it to be even 😊
Get a new edger pad if your chewing up quarter round or shoe molding at the bottom thats because your pad is worn and your disks are ever so slightly “curling” over the edge of the pad and basically sanding the bottom edge of the molding. That and before you run the edger look for any “high” spots and knock those down first then do the entire wall. Another tip is on your “ruff” cut never go all the way up against the shoe molding stay back about an inch making sure not to rut it out that way you can come back with your medium grit and “feather” up to the shoe molding without chewing it up. Its a mixture of a few technics and also the condition of your pad edger pads if you look at a brand new one have a beveled 45 degree angle so that the rubber “should” skip off the molding before the paper does so very gently ease your way up to the molding once you get your “rhythm” and the key is to just ever so slightly just skip off the molding once you get that technic down it will stay with you forever

It looks to be a handmade piece! Buy the scraper blades, wing nut, screw from Home Depot and cut down a good piece of wood. Sand it smooth and round the edges. The lighter the better!
If you scrape and hand sand all the butts or ORBITAL them before you stain you wont have to waste a bunch of time with pain in the ass repairs. If its going that dark water it.
I've been doing this for 15 years with the same tools he's using. I've never had one complaint. Actually let me not lie I had one but the guys wife told me he just wanted a discount. Either way he uses these tools far different and his methods are far different then mine. P.s gotta sharpen that scraper sir
Thats how i was taught but im not 18 years old anymore. If you gotta scrape butts for dark stain then you should probably water the floor- the water helps get rid of orbital marks.

If you sand 3000-4000 square feet of hardwood floors and do like what he is doing. It will take you a month to finish a shoddy project and get no pay from a home owner

Old guys still scrape and buff and water pop I think it all depends on your edger if your edger is working good don't have too many issues. But as a professional you should never have called backs and your customers should never say what about this period
Wow why are you scraping the edges , don't need to do that. It's ok to edge across the grain but you still need to feather out you final cuts not across the grain. Where do they find theee guys to teach? Been doing floors for 35 years and what he is doing is a joke,

@@RNicolasRuvalcaba I've been doing it for a little less than a year now but if we're taking old finish off, we start with 50 grit on the edger (2 papers, back to back) cut across the grain and then feather it out, then do 100 grit the same with, 2 papers, and then do 100 grit screen (1 screen) with a red pad to get out the scratches, but really only if we're going anything darker than nutmeg or if we just have the time to kill lol. But yeah we also pop the floors if it's nutmeg or darker but we just pop it, let it dry and then stain it we don't sand after popping. But then again, we also use a 7k dollar Trio sander. So we usually do 50 grit drum, 80 grit drum 100 grit drum, then 100 grit or sometimes 120 grit trio papers then 100 or 120 grit trio screens. Never used the buffer to sand the wood just for sanding before the final coat, and also to put on stain with a carpet circle. The guy that owns the company started in like the 80's doing floors and in the 90's he started the company and has been running it successfully ever since. And we do multi million dollar homes. Why would they scrape all of the edges like that? Scraping is the #1 thing I hate about this job it's like my worst enemy because I suck at it so much lol. I'm no expert but I don't know what he's even doing. Sure a Trio is super heavy and expensive but it'll get up 2" or so from the wall so when you go to screen the edges with the edger you really only have to come out maybe 4 inches and just make sure you get the edge really good. Now, find me a way to not have to scrape the corners and use a power tool to do it and I'll be your best friend forever lol.
@@dedalliance1 It sounds like you're working for a quality company. Regarding scraping corners: try not to edge all the way into the corner with your first cut. Stay a few inches away from the corner with the rough cut then get a little closer with your final cut. This should help minimize having a deep ridge in the corner and it should be a little easier to scrape. Sometimes, when I have extra time I'll use a 5 inch orbital sander in the corners first which also makes scraping corners pretty easy. Another tip is learning how to sharpen the scraper blade properly. You should always have a very soft and equal football shaped taper to the blade.. It should always have a slight angle because if its too rounded it looks like you're distressing the floor. I can't stand it when my guys fuck up my scraper blades and they're on a 45 degree angle or reverse concave.

This is a ridiculous process lol start with 60, then 100grt and then orbital 80grt. If you can’t get under a toe kick, scrape and hand sand.There’s no way this guy does this in the field.
If you have a good palm sander you do not leave marks . Most young guys can’t even keep the scraper sharp or strait

If all the finish was removed nothing should be gumming up.

If you tilt that machine you will definitely dig deeper in the floor more than you want to to so my best advice is to not do it
