I'd be more inclined to believe that Japanese corporate culture cared about employee health if they weren't working them to death and encouraging drinking after work parties. I think the companies are more concerned with how the employees look (not fat) than about their overall health.

@@ASHERUISE the amount of psychological stress and and overwork japanese people get throughout their lives, from school 'til retirement can't be less harmful than being obese.. you might be self conscious about your body but it's possible to die happy that way.
Having a 1/2 chance of having alcohol dependence and depression paired with anxiety is far worse than being obese tbh

Also, I would much rather live in a society where trains don't always arrive perfectly on time, but depression, suicide, and harassment aren't prevailing social problems. @@destituteanddecadent9106 Bless your heart and may you be strong when facing hardship ❤️ We can always wish for their system to soften when enough immigrants have voiced their complaints, or with the younger generation being more self aware and wary of mental health and their serious consequences
What’s counter productive though, is people moving to Japan, having pressure at work all the time, but not voicing it enough. Japan is sure a treasure mine when it comes to culture and language, but the country has flaws and it’s hard to watch those aspects being so hidden.. immigrants might receive another treatment, or they get used to the amount of work and pressure, that gets countered with Japan’s beauty.. I still have hope for the future though.. maybe they’ll open their eyes after Covid, since everyone suffers with mental health more than before. ✨

Like I say "I don't 'go on diets'" because * I don't * , but that doesn't mean 'even if I say no, give me all your food'....the worst part is when they're like 'it's a waste of food if you don't eat it' - like...I eat as cleanly as possible, but I still have a threshold- I'm not like one of those ppl who compete to eat as much as they can - if someone's like "hey, I can't finish this" then I'll probably eat it BECAUSE it's like a couple bites or sth - but when you're telling me to eat like 3+ times what I usually eat (and I say very clearly that I usually don't eat n amount of x) - I'm sorry if it's rude, but I physically can't eat that much (like during maybe large meals, I *have* to take a break halfway through because I don't want any leftovers but I rly don't want to eat anymore)

Being fat in Japan CAN come in handy sometimes. I used to commute on the Den-en-toshi Line every morning. At Azamino station there was always a big dude getting on the train. I wouldn't say he was sumo-size, but pretty big. He had this technique where he would take a few steps back, charge at the door like a bull and throw himself into the train. No matter how crowded it was, he ALWAYS got on. Too bad about the people he crushed though...

The walking/public transportation culture in Japan is nice. I live in the US and I've been walking to work for the past year (about an hour of walking round trip) and people are always surprised that I don't drive. It'd be nice if the more people here used transportation and walking/biking. We'd all be a lot healthier. It'd be nice to have more farmer's markets and a stronger "cook at home" culture in the US too. Going to a nearby grocery store every day and cooking food for friends and family at home is so nice.

They're mostly popular among teenagers, and is spread through gossip, social media, and websites. School children would teach each other how to throw there lunch away and participate in these movements without raising alarms. Despite this, there are little to no eating disorder treatment centers.

I'm pretty chunky, thankfully I live in a city of decency and schools take bullying seriously, children are all aware of the consequences of bullying and avoids it and reports possible instances even tickling is bad and if fighting starts the teachers come, calms the two students and let's them talk about their problems properly and have the two students apologize, If they can't do that the teachers usually call the parents and schedule a meeting, but if it's really drastic the teachers have no problem scaring the students to death lol. Also it's not just "who hit first" they reason why it happened, for example if the student was being teased and he or she retaliated by hitting, then the people teasing her will be the one who gets punished.
In my case the moment you don't let it bother you is the moment they don't have power, and when I faced actual targeted bullying(a transfer student essentially calling me fat on the first day of school), I can retaliate all I want(I punched him in the face after telling him we're not close for such "jokes" and my classmates all agreed)
Didn't get in trouble, and the transfer student transfered to another school.
Most cases of bullying is really gossips, and being fat doesn't really have much juice to squeeze when it comes to gossips.
So it's usually thin "sexy" students get the "I hear she has another boyfriend/ I hear he got someone pregnant" kind of gossips.
And when these things are reported it's pretty private talk with the teachers and nobody is allowed to disclose what was talked about.
Disrespecting the teachers is equal to a death sentence... Lol they will get so mad they can break school property, one once punched the wall next to the student, and it made his knuckles bleed and left a small crack on the wall.

I definitely understand how it feels when people talk negatively about your weight, but overall, it can become a bit easier to lose weight in Japan since most people walk everywhere and eat generally more healthy.

Not as many processed foods, or foods with additives, in Japan, compared to the shit we eat here in the US. There have been many studies showing that you could eat the exact same food, if not more food in other countries than in America and you could still lose weight. It's not about the food itself, it's about the nutrition the food gives you. American foods nowadays lack so much nutrients in them. That is why we have to eat so much of the food...

My grandmother is from Japan and she moved to the states in the early 50's. My whole life one of the first things she says to me when I see her is about my weight. Then she always asks me when I'm getting married. I remember when I was in high school she didn't want my junior prom picture because she thought I looked fat and was ashamed to show her friends. I was only 90lbs! Now I'm usually between 100-105lbs and when she sees me it's always ooh gosh you get soo big how will you find a husband! She's 92 now and has dementia but she still always brings up my weight and marital status and now it's actually comforting like ooh she's still the same.

I had an aunt like that. Everytime I saw her it was something something about my appearance weight, hair, clothes. She would tell me to exercise. I would say I do exercise. Which I do. She would add some people can work out and work out and never lose weight. My entire life. The only time she ever uttered anything nice about my appearance was when I was 19 years old. She kept saying how better I looked. I had spent my last few years as a teen not eating. Living on black coffee and an apple a day. I saw her once a few years ago after not having seen her in years and she asks when am I getting married. I'm 38 now she passed away about a month ago. My 17 year old kid asked which aunt was this? I told him the one who gave you 20 bucks for dropping off groceries for her once. He says oh no she was nice😂

Ugh family members can be so rude. I guess that's one thing common among cultures. My husband had to go to the hospital for hypertension and all his parents could talk about was how many pounds he needed to lose. Totally discounting how much progress he made undoing his bad habits (which by the way they contributed hugely in his childhood...). Health is a lifestyle, not just a number on a scale.

@incontentia buttocks I know exactly what you mean. Besides my grandma I remember my friends/classmates used to call me fat when I was in 3rd grade. They used to point out how fat my thighs looked when I sat down. I still had my "baby fat" as some ppl call it. When I had my one and only growth spurt I slimmed down but I couldn't shake what they all had said. So in fourth grade I slowly started limiting how much I ate and that slowly progressed into me not eating at all for years. It wasn't until my mid 20's when I said screw it and started to feel comfortable with myself. It also wasn't until my 20's that I wore shorts again. From 3rd grade till 22 I never wore shorts bc 9f what they said about my thighs. It's crazy how much of an impact words can have on your life.

When we moved to Japan I got so bullied especially since I have green eyes they used to say "she wld be so pretty what a waste." Or that I was a "pig w a painted face." Just cause I was chubby I was trash, plus I was into anime/ manga and street fashion so my family talked down on me even more for being an otaku. I had a complete breakdown after H2, I became anorexic & bulimic but I got so much praise it reinforced my body dysmorphia. I got so thin; I cldnt go to college cause my anxiety was so bad. I tried to kill myself and my mom took me to a inpatient clinic in USA. I took a couple years for me thankfully my mom & bro were always supportive, my bro moved to USA w me to support me. I ended up going into mental health as Psychiatrist and when I finished my MD my Jiji would brag that Im a Dr. And so pretty. It still hurt everytime cause she didnt support me till I was her idea of beauty & success. Thankfully Im more stable & having struggled it helps me connect to others. I hate when people talk badly about others bodies or looks cause you never know what someones going through.

I came to Japan at 70+ kilo and lost 15 naturally over the last few years. I remember one time I went to a health checkup and I was at 60kg (I’m a 166cm tall woman so completely healthy) and the older nurse who took my weight laughed saying 「ごめんねー笑ちゃいいけないけど」 and I cried after that visit. My coworker also who is on the heavier side who is Japanese was teased in the teachers room on the day we handmade mochi . We worked all day and finally were able to sit down and eat what we made when everyone did buffet style and took the mochi they wanted to eat. She took a plateful and one of our senpai’s laughed saying, “Is that really gonna be enough for you?” I felt terrible for her..

To be fair I was a very skinny kid but I don't think I was unhealthily so. It was just my frame. But whereas many people were self-conscious bc of their parents due to being fat, I was always self-conscious and insecure due to being skinny, especially since a lot of other people my age in our ethnic community were/are chunky and I was the outlier. I'm still very thin today but my mom's mentioned that my body turned out "all right" now since I filled out a little with age. 🙄 And when I say a little, I mean very little lol.

@@Ssaidak you could walk the entire length of Japan twice and that distance still won't get you half way across Texas. the USA is HUGE. most don't realize how big but you can fit most of Europe inside the USA and still have room. also not many places give people a safe area to walk in the USA. sidewalks are always in disrepair and the roads are very dangerous as most drivers don't pay attention. its only in the big cities like LA, New York, Chicago that the sidewalks are fit for walking. you can't find any good places in small towns or the country areas.
Japan has a bullet train that spans almost its entire length you can take their train and it won't cost you 2 weeks paycheck unlike here in the USA where a 1 way train ticket will cost you near $300. the cheapest form of transport in the USA for long distance travel is airplane flight in the lowest class seats. even the bus system is expensive. they don't make travel cheap because they don't like the idea that people can move or go to a different part of the country for work or to live. its how they keep their citizens poor and trapped.

Welcome to Wisconsin. Why does everyone forget some of us live in that "fly over" part of the country, not everyone is living on the Coasts of the USA. The "town" I live in which has a gas station is actually 4 miles away. The town with a store in it is a further 12 miles from the town I already need to hike nearly 4 miles to get to. I'm overweight because I'm disabled, so the combination of medication, not being able to exercise as much, and a medically diagnosed slow metabolism, have lead to me being very over weight. What people don't realise is that I also significantly under eat because my slow metabolism means I just don't really feel hungry, and I also have a lot of food allergies and chronic nausea, so can't really eat junk food or things like that, but the chronic under eating means my body constantly thinks it's in a famine. People find it incredibly difficult to get their heads around the fact that I don't over eat or eat junk food. I once had a new doctor recommend I not eat cake, then be surprised when I explained I can't eat cake because of allergies. They were so convinced that I must be a junk food addict by looking at me, that it didn't occur to them to actually look at my file. Once they did, they were suddenly telling me I have to eat more despite the nausea and not feeling hungry, and I've since seen a dietician who recommends I set alarms to eat more regularly.
