It took me days to tell my mom. I told her I liked the show but you might think I'm gay. Then she guessed MLP. She told me she knew what a Brony was. I felt so embarrassed my face was a tomato.
I started watching the show in 5th grade, and I'm currently in high school, I think it's safe to say that most people I know have accepted the fact that I like MLP. Also nobody seems to care that I have a Twilight plush that sticks out of my backpack when I walk through the halls at school. ;)
When I told my aunt and uncle they were very understanding and sure I got teased but they accepted who I am. Also Tootsie you sound like Thorax a little.
What I would do is just ask if you can order a pony plushie/toy. Or just watch it on the family Netflix account and wait for them to notice it. A lot easier than bringing it up in conversation.
I didn't had to. My dad just don't care and my mum figured out herslef. At the begining she was very sceptic. When I was wearing something (like a necklace) she usually said "Take it off. You look like a gay" but I just don't care. She still is but not much as in the begining.
I don't think its really THAT groundbreaking to tell your parents that your into MLP. Not much to explain other then its a good show to watch, that's all. But hey when I first watched it around 2011, it took me two weeks to tell my family about it lol. xD
Here’s what I did, and if you’re too nervous to bring it up in conversation, you could try something similar and have them bring it up. What I did was hide a Pinkie Pie ornament on the Christmas tree one year and waited for them to find it and ask me about it. This may not work for everyone, especially because it could potentially lead to you being cornered into having “the talk”, but it worked and they accepted me. Also, be prepared for some awkward questions if they decide to research... As for other people (friends, coworkers, random people on the street), if you’re nervous or afraid about bringing it up then it might help to enjoy other shows as well. That way, if the question “What shows do you like?” comes up in conversation (and you decide that you want to tell them you’re a Brony), just list off the shows you like and casually drop it in the middle. Then you can judge from their reaction as to whether or not they’ve accepted that fact. I did this with a coworker and had to restate it because he showed no signs whatsoever, and it turned out he used to be a Brony himself. However, on a different note, I do agree that you shouldn’t make a bigger deal about it than you have to. One time I was talking with my parents about and I said the phrase “when I came out” and it didn’t sound quite right. It made it seem as if it had the same magnitude as telling someone you’re LGBTQ, which, to be honest, it shouldn’t. For the most part you’re just saying that you enjoy a TV show, not seriously admitting to a different lifestyle, though for a lot of people it can be a difficult weight to get off their chest. Lastly, bear in mind that this applies to any fandom or lifestyle, not just Bronies. Hopefully this was helpful and not too long winded.
