I plant pumpkins too before and that is what we call direct cross pollination, but when we chose the male flower, we choose the one that is almost opening. I haven't tried the flower that already opened if it works

It was a couple of weeks before I had any female flowers but I had plenty of male flowers early on.

So after you polinate the m & f what do you do with it? Plant it? You never said why and what you do with it.
That was very informative - do I also dispose of unwanted pumpkins to reduce the stress on the vine? In other words - Do I limit the vine to one fruit?

I know this is an 8 years old comment, so you’ll probably never see this but the cultivar of pumpkin used in this video and by the vast majority of giant pumpkin growers is called “Dills Atlantic Giant”

one trick that makes any fruit grow bigger is to trim the new leaves regularly. the plant "Intelligence " tells the plants to grow better fruit when it cannot flower more. its more like dealing with an emergency situation. when the plant cannot bear more fruits the few fruits it has will get all the nutrition to make it bigger and stronger. i had once tried it with cucumbers and it worked. i kept pruning the new tender leaves and used it in salads while the plant gave much healthier cucumbers

What is the purpose of growing giant pumpkins, are they edible, is it possible to use them in cooking?
shafaq007 some take them out for a competition. And the competition they make them into boats..... it looks more like a barrel race in the water but still pretty ridiculous
Think of it more as a sport. The gardener has to know what he's doing to get it to grow so big and its a fun challenge and its just cool to grow giant fruit.

the male flower rotting would put mould inside the pumpkin and essentially cause it to rot

Mine grew fast, and my Ph is 5.5. So keep it a hair acidic, not as much as me though x_x

Elisabeth, that is sand. The pumpkin grows so fast you have to put sand under the pumpkin to reduce friction

Dee Kay wrong. Giant pumpkins are edible just typically not as tasty as those varieties that are for eating specifically
