I made the Tropical Standard recipe in December 2023. Yes, labor intensive, but incomparable results. I still have a third of a bottle left and it's still going strong.
BG Reynold’s Falernum is probably favorite syrup. Cool breakdown on the different products, would love to make my own one day - that OFTD would come in clutch to use as a liqueur
If you use your clarified lime cordial but use super juice instead and then use Tropical standards specs you get the ultimate mostly shelf stable Falernum you can have
I've made my own in the past since apparently Taylor's is a hard to find ingredient in my area. There is a local distiller who started making one that I need to check out sometime. Now it's fall, I've been craving more cocktails with that spiced flavor.
I really like the “Five Minute Falernum” from Mixing Up Tiki. Very simple. Super cheap. Great flavour. And if you take the time to filter it, it can be really clear.
my falernum mix is a bit of a mess to make but the taste is great, allspice, ginger slices, lime zest, cloves, vanilla bean and almond extract (due to nut allergy) and let that all sit in overproof rum for 2 weeks. Then filter, add sugar and water for rich SS and lime juice, blend. Top with a little 190 pf everclear to make it shelf stable. Always make in big batches so I don't have to make it as often.
At the beginning of this year I made falernum by basically following an older video of yours and really liked it, but found that it just dominated my palate in any cocktail. Because of a Cyber Monday sale, I've got Liquid Alchemist's Falernum syrup on the way but I think I'll make a version of the Tropical Standard version to compare.
So weird, I decided to make a falernum today after watching one of your older videos about tiki cocktails. As I was cooking the almonds, I popped on TH-cam to have some background noise and here you are going into depth about flavor profiles. Thanks for the info
I thought it would be great to have a dark Falernum and made my own withe the addition of chocolate, vanilla, a bit of coffee and some other spices. It mixes very well with heavier Rums.
Great overview, will definitely have to try the T S recipe soon. What's the name of the song that ends at 17:22? I need a whole playlist that matches that vibe
I tried a sample of the new Liquid Alchemist Falernum at their booth at Tiki Oasis. Immediately bought a bottle. I like the more intense ginger than the Velvet Falernum. They did say to use less than called for because of the "spiceness" of it.
Woah….that recipe from the Philadelphia Enquirer is the recipe that we use in JAMAICA for RUM PUNCH- that is most definitely not Falernum. One of bitter (lime juice), two of sweet (cherry/strawberry syrup), three of strong (Jamaican white overproof (i.e. 63%) rum) and four of weak (water…we usually leave most of this out 😅). To this, we add lots of pimento berries and leave it for a couple days to mature the flavour. But that old recipe will quickly teach you that it is far too strong for Falernum and not at all the flavour profile. The most authentic tale I heard about Falernum’s origin is that it came from BARBADOS, where locals made their own variations on a common theme, involving rum, lime, sugar, pimento, ginger, almond and it could include tings like cloves and mace. A local Barbadian woman was asked by a foreigner for the recipe, who responded “haffi learn’um,” which means “you have to (“haffi”) learn it (“learn’um”)”… from which the foreigner called the drink ‘Falernum’….no doubt the rum contributed to the slur causing the nomenclature. 😅
My favorite is "Le merveilleux Falernum" bought in France it's barely sweet and balanced for spices. Velvet falernum is nearly only sugar and has not much taste. The one from Bitter Truth is very ginger forward.
Bitter Truth Golden is my favorite. Brovo is milder so I use it in older recipes. Maggie’s Farm is also excellent but I like the BT a little more. Haven’t tried the Tropical Standard yet.
So far I've been using JDT Velvet because that's what's readily available and pretty much the quasi-standard over here. There are offewrings by Giffard and Monin but, looking at the price tags, I don't really wanna go there. Gonna try The Bitter Truth next and surely make my own at some point as well. Cheers! 🥂
I used to buy Lucky Falernum but that is no longer available in my market (Alberta). My current fav is from Sons of Vancouver, done in collaboration with Shameful tiki, a great product that adds flavour, unlike the John D Taylor which to me os more akin to a simple sweetener than anything else. Used to do a good homemade version, but as with orgeat, I enjoy some of the excellent commercial alternatives. And now I have more time to perfect my simple syrup recipe.
For some reason, I can't find Velvet Falernum anywhere I visit in my country. I tried a syrup and it basically just tasted like cloves. Maybe I'll finally just make some.
I searched high an low to finally get some John D Taylors and ended up putting it down the drain. Tasted like water with a few drops of bleach, ginger, and lime fragrance. I cannot imagine using it in anything especially a Zombie where the spices matter. Please make your own. Both recipes here are great!
The shot with the glass and the reflection of the bottles in the background was really slick
I stick with Velvet for the classics. I always assumed a liquor and not a syrup would have been used back in the day
Way to go, Alton! I know.
Now make a zombie with all of them and tell us your favorite!
I'll second this proposition👍
Please do this!
I third it!
Great idea!

7:05 AB would be proud 😏
…but that’s another show.
Maggie’s Farm out of Pittsburgh makes a really great one too
Maggie’s Farm definitely has the lime taste

Love making my own but my go to for laziness in cocktails and Zombies is Maggies Farms for sure

Do you know what the final ABV is of the TS Falernum?
For some reason, I can't find Velvet Falernum anywhere I visit in my country. I tried a syrup and it basically just tasted like cloves. Maybe I'll finally just make some.
Check out the Luau Lad's Falernum
I see that pirate life decal on the wall
is it possible to add rum into a falernum syrup? lets say a 12oz bottle of falernum syrup, what would be the rum to syrup ratio?
You can but I don’t have the numbers for you. The liqueurs are all different ABV from 11-30+%
The falernum #9 has a typo - it says “slivered slivered”
Like others said, The Bitter Truth one is missing :)

You SOB
How's the upcoming channel coming along? 😂😂😂
Love the collabs with you 2. I feel a podcast with both of you would be a blast.
😂

That California Falernum is terrible. They need to give it up. No redeeming qualities.
