We are very lucky to be the first in the UK to drive the Model Y Dual Motor Long Range and compare it side by side with the equivalent (also made in China) Model 3.
How does real world range and efficiency compare in real-world driving? (Not trying to be efficient at all!).
What is the space like for driver and passengers plus luggage? Is it much more practical?
Does it drive differently? Is it better?
    Here, we find out!
Big thank to Oliver for driving it over. Check out his website: www.custom-tesla.com

I'm not a big car person, but I love good design and aesthetics. In my opinion I think the model Y might be just one of the most practical cars out there. I personally think it looks fantastic. The dimensions just look 'right' to me. I really think Tesla have hit the nail on the head with the model Y.

We love our 2021 model Y. If you have toddlers, the model y is a much more practical car compared to the model 3. In our 2019 model 3, the back door opening is smaller and lower so our kid knocks her head more often compared to when we take the model y. We also opted for the 7 seater version and the additional 2 seats have come in handy a number of times where we wanted to only take 1 car and were able to all squeeze in for a short ride.

We own 2 model ys. Have them in metallic grey and black with both 20inch wheels. 2021 has much better suspension and ride vs 2020. Not a flashy car but I think they look nice esp with anything but non aero wheels lol. It's just such a practical car with the hatch and higher ride height. As soon as they start lowering the price than it's just game over. These cars are still pricey but no regrets from me. Tesla is doing its job to mass market the y and 3 and as soon as Berlin and Texas opens up I think the cost will come down.

The Lifetime status on my 2020 LR AWD (with Performance Boost) is 9010 miles and my wh/mi is 258 driven in the US mid-west so we experience all FOUR seasons and 3K+ miles were on long road trips. Very close to your numbers in the UK. We are considering trading to the 7 seater now that our grandkids are bigger and like road tripping with us. I lower my tire pressures to soften the ride and when we go on road trips we pump them up, seems to help on city streets, especially in cold temps.

You know, I like what you did, good points... ...but I test drove the model Y and immediately chose the model 3 without driving it. The reason was that the high front of the Model Y is a show stopper for me. I like to see if there are children playing in front of my car. And also the M3 looks much, much cooler, not just more sporty, but a more elegant design. I get my model 3 LR white on white, FSD with winter rims/tires in May. So that will be my M3 test drive )).

That small bit of higher energy usage could be chalked up to the sport wheels on the M 3. Although the tires might be the same, the wind aero efficiency might have caused a slight bit more drag resistance. Still amazing that an overall heavier vehicle with added insulation weight was still that close.

@17:00 well put, I test drove a y long range recently and was surprised by how hard it rode and how fidgety/nervous the steering was (which made it rather annoying to drive at highway speeds where I expected it to shine). It could really use a softer setup and a more relaxed steering rack. This would probably also help reduce road noise.
The model 3 on the other was brilliant. Nicer/softer/quieter ride while still feeling sporty and the steering felt just right too.
Also the 3 has 30-60 miles more range.
So uh yeah, I like the model Y but unless you really need the extra space I think the 3 is better.

Assuming batteries are identical in reality (which they probably won't despite having the same kWh rating), it's most likely that the Y turned out to be more efficient because it slipstreamed more during that bit of the trip (ie if it was the rear car in the convoy). Or perhaps its the newer tires, but it's a minuscule difference anyway. Great stuff as always.

I've got a M3 and test drove the Y yesterday - There is a significant difference in the handling of the Y compared to the 3. The 3 has a lower centre of gravity and you can clearly sense it when you are driving it. The M3LR has 40 miles more in range. If you love driving a sportier car the 3 is a far better drive than the Y. The Y is bigger and looks better but drives worse. If a 3 raced a Y on a track it would leave it behind.

I have a model 3 as a company car until March 2024. I’m hoping we’ll get Model Y in the UK by then (?), if so will go for a 7 seat LR

Thanks for this fab comparison. Great that you’ve managed to get hold of a model Y in the UK…. you’ve answered all of the daft questions that have been floating round my head since I first saw this car. I’ve never had a Tesla…. but I think this could be for me. Do you know if the Model Y has front and rear parking sensors? Thanks again

Kind of surprised they tested so close in efficiency. Was the Y drafting off the 3 for most of the trip?

    Hi,
I was considering buying a Tesla Model Y in Australia when it comes out, but a new BYD Atto 3 has just been released. I was just wondering if you knew much about this car? It's half the price. But Tesla has more range, awd, supercharger capacity. A someone without a home charger living in an apartment I can't decide between the 2! Just wondering if you had any thoughts

Great to hear that the efficiency doesn't seem to much worse than the M3. Looks like it will be a fantastic buy. Or that plenty of M3 owners will switch and you can get a relative bargain on one. 🤞

Truth is there is nothing wrong with tesla suspension but a quality or luck of of British roads.

Thanks for this video. I need to replace my diesel because of ULEZ. I want to switch to a Y but it will be some time. Which car do you think is a better stop gap, an ID.4 (52 kwh) or a Tesla Model 3?

The issue with all Teslas sold outside of the US, is that FSD wont work. Associated with this is the major issue with phantom braking and all of the automated functions which also don't work properly. all of this is caused by the cameras. It's no small thing!

Richard, is it worthy to keep my MS75 (end of lease this month, balloon 30k) or shall I go for MY? I love MS and got the MCU2 done + CCS upgrade. Will I gain something by getting MY? I know I will lose free supercharging and pay more for MY

  • @madonemt
    @madonemt 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I prefer the 3 to the y personally BUT would probably buy the 7 seat y as it suits our family better. If we get a 6 seat European cyber truck I would get that though.

Ordered one the same day the email came from Tesla! Apparently coming from China "early 2022" but has LFP batteries which are said to be safer, perhaps have longer lifespan but are less energy dense. This might explain why the MIC MY has lower range than the US versions. Seen numerous reviews saying the suspension is too hard and steering fidgety do hoping Tesla offer test drives to people who've ordered without an opportunity to experience it first hand.
