    Trench lighters use lighter fluid like a zippo. There would’ve been some pissed off soldiers trying to use that. I’ve got one similar to that one and if it gets even remotely damp you’re done. It’s a neat party trick like a fire piston but that’s all either of them are good for. Just remember this is a commercial he wants a thicker wallet.

    This is how we used to light our fireworks. Dad would give us about 6 in of smouldering cotton rope and then off we'd go. It was a lot safer than giving us a lighter or matches, (of course, a brick of a thousand black cats and hundreds of bottle rockets were trouble in itself).😂😂😂

    • @johntitor9875
      @johntitor9875 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They're most certainly not water proof. Not ever water resistant. However, it is not supposed to be your only way of starting a fire, rather an alternative that you have alongside your Bic, your matches, maybe even a magnifying glass so that you always have a way to start a fire in different conditions.

  • @trip9919
    @trip9919 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    When I was in college for outdoor education my survival teacher taught us one important thing. That we live in the modern world and no matter how many ways he teaches us how to start fire to make sure to use your head and always carry a Bic lighter in your pocket because yes as though adverse conditions may cause it to be harder to start if that's always in your pocket you have a guaranteed source of 3,000 lights. Not to mention they're small enough you can keep a couple on you or in different places making sure no matter what if you do end up stuck. I've gotten caught up in thinking all these different ideas and ways to start a fire that people try to sell you is going to be useful but in the end it just ends up being more clutter and unnecessary stuff to weigh you down.

    or just get a few bic lighters, that contaption is literally a shitty lighter, how many bic lighters can i buy for the price of that? Not to mention when a bic lighter runs out of gas you essentially have the same device. Wrap some of that fancy twine around your lighter and you're good to go.

    I got one to smoke a pipe....it works great, but you end up inhaling a bit of rope smoke, which isn't nice. I'll use it next time I'm in a crow's nest in the rain 👍

    Rope match. This is what you use in a matchlock musket too. I have a piece of charred cotton rope in a .30-06 case with a 9mm on top as a cap. I use a dead lighter to spark it up

    It is cool but, It’s just a more convoluted zippo…why not just get a couple zippos?

    I have something similar to this. Actually two things similar to this one is a hemp rope that inside of a metal tube and you push it out just like yours and you can hit it with a Ferro rod. I also have a Zippo fire starter, that has tinder inside the waterproof case that floats. And all you do is put it onto a stick, roughing up the tender and light it the same way that yours works. The Zippo one was only $5.

    The only problem with a lot of these is that they don't have any ways to replace the flint. At least on the cheaper ones. Just something to consider. They work great untill they get wet. I have one in a small kit kept in a Ziploc with a moisture absorber.
