The World's BEST AIRLINE Museum + Operation Center Tour

  • In May this year, I visited the Delta Air Lines museum in Atlanta. This is the BEST AIRLINE MUSEUM I've ever been. It houses the first B747-400 in the world, B767-200 Spirit of Delta, the original Delta Dust Cropping plane, a shiney silver DC-3 and many interesting items.
    After the tour of museum, I visited the Delta Tech Ops and Operation Center to see first hand how the operation is conducted.

    I'm fortunate to live in Atlanta and have visited the museum many times. I just love the place. Delta has done such a great job. Although they have a section of an L-1011 at the museum, I wish they had a full size L-1011. There are so few examples left, even in boneyards, most have been scrapped. It was a workhorse for Delta for many years. It was my favorite Delta aircraft and I flew many hours domestically and international on them.

    • @AMF96
      @AMF96 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Agreed. They really should have a full Delta L-1011at the museum. I had read somewhere that the cockpit section that they do have at the museum was actually from the prototype L-1011 ( N1011 ) the orange painted prototype L-1011 that Lockheed used for test flights and the first L-1011 ever built.

    Fun fact:
    Delta's 747 on display in their museum formerly belonged to Northwest airlines, which served as flight 85 that had a rudder hardover incident back at 2002, the plane was eventually repaired and continued to fly with Northwest until Delta bought it in 2008, which retired in September 2015

    I've been to it too. I like how this one shows more modern jetliners and is very hands on. Most aviation museums only show vintage aircraft and therefore are also not very hands on. I like that you can step onto the 767 and 747 and dream about flying on it. It's also really cool on the 747 exhibit to fully understand the size of the aircraft. For example the wheels on most aircraft look the same size as the tires on your car. But you can go stand by them and find out that they're about the same height as you. I also liked that you can walk around and fully explore the 747 cabin. Amazingly I have flown on Delta's 747 four times all in Delta One and only one time on the lower deck (NRT-HNL, SEA-NRT, NRT-HNL, DTW-ICN). So I barely knew what it was like to fly on the lower half of the aircraft. Also the 747 on exhibit has an amazing history. It was originally delivered to Northwest Airlines and was involved in an "incident." On its way from Detroit to Narita the aircraft suffered a rudder hard-over. The 747's rudder is so large it is divided into two segments. The lower one had a full left rudder hard-over. Since it was divided into two segments the crew were able to gain control of the aircraft by applying hard right rudder moving the top rudder right. The aircraft was safely diverted to Anchorage. Although the cause was not found the NTSB concluded that it was probably caused from stress over time on the rudder. Considering it was used in vigorous testing exercises it was probably correct. Rest assured this will not happen on your flight on a 747-400 because there was an airworthiness directive issued requiring more vigorous inspections and installing a device to eliminate a rudder hard-over from happening. The significance of the event is that because the rudder on the 747 was divided into two segments the flight was able to land safely and thats what also makes Delta Ship 6301 special.

As someone else has suggested a visit to the Qantas Museum and Historical aircraft at Wollongong should be on your list. The Qantas 747-400 which made the direct flight from LHR to Sydney is stored there. I was on a Qantas Jet Base tour the day it arrived in Sydney and went on board to have a look and it had the famous "new car" smell about it!! Its a shame to see these majestic machines being slowly mothballed! More please!
