My Korean wife sadly hasn't assimilated comfortably into Malaysian lifestyle and food yet. So we spend a fortune every month eating foreign food even while living in Malaysia for the past 6 years. The only local food she loves is Pan Mee, because it's quite similar to Kalguksu and Sujebi. If I want to eat local, sendiri cari makan lol. But yeah, because of her, I have so many Korean friends in Malaysia now and it's a beautiful culture to deep-dive into. We both live in Mont Kiara where most of the Koreans and Japanese reside at.

Im not blaming them for moving here but to me its a bit sad bcs they looks like zero intention to learn about malaysia culture, foods n language. Lets just say if I as Malaysian move to korea, its likely mandatory to learn about their language right ?. Even if we went to buy something and the customer service are bangladesh , its kinda hard to ask them something in malay bcs they would not understand it. There is also one incident where i met the korean guy and that guy’s car looks in trouble but i thought he is a chinese,so i ask him “do u need my help/Nak Saya Tolong ke?” in malay then the guy just shove/wave his hand in a harsh way meaning “go away” maybe he thought i am a villain or something bcs could not speaks and understand my word in bahasa. There is no incentive to learn Malay language as everyone speaks English and everyday street Malay language has been bastardised aka Bahasa Rojak. Also due racial religious politics in Malaysia Malay language is synonymous with the Malay and muslim community and thus not a language of neutrality and national unity amongst the different races. It is better Malaysia adopts Indonesian as the neutral language. Indonesian is spoken across the Nusantara archipelago amongst different ethnic and religious groups from Aceh to Papua. Many Malaysian, Bruneian, East Timorese and even Southern Thailand youngsters are exposed to Indonesia's music and tv programs they have adopted many Indonesian words into their Malay language. After all bahasa Indonesia is the more modernised and stsndardised version of Malay spoken on Sumatra and Malaysia. And many Malaysians understand bahasa Indonesia and not the other way round. Malay language was the regional lingua franca in the 15th to 19 century. It has been replaced by bahasa Indonesia as the new lingua franca in the 21st century and is now an official UN lan guage

Interesting to see expats moving to Malaysia end up speaking English and not the official national language - whatever this is called. When expats settle in Indonesia they end up speaking Bahasa Indonesia (a standardised and modernised version of Johor-Riau Malay) or even Bahasa Jakarta (creole Malay). And Malaysia not long ago wanted to push Malay language as an official UN language. Bahasa Indonesia is the new lingua franca of the region and Malaysia should adopt Bahasa Indonesia as its national language because it is neutral and spoken by many ethnic groups and religious backgrounds across the Nusantara archipelago.
