If that were the case I think the south would of dominated hip hop even earlier than it did outkast was recording southern playalistic in 93 , rap alot records was already a house hold name ugk n screw were also buzzing and getting alot of attention
I mean, they probably were. Even Tommy Wright himself said the OG's were clean even with the cheap equipment they were working with at the time, but being ripped and copied a million times over definitely gave them a darker sound to them. Unless you bought vintage equipment and recreated the exact techniques, it's hard to say for sure.
