For all the reasons you give, this is a great solution to problems that adult students often face. BTW, I didn't notice many issues using my (brand new) Dell. I have yet to receive the Yeti. And I will definitely grab my iPad for downloading scores. All in all, for me, the benefits of taking lessons via Skype outweigh whatever the problems might be. Most importantly, I appreciate the ability to choose the teacher I want, the convenience of taking lessons at home, and the ability to fit piano instruction into an extremely busy schedule. Thanks again for the lovely experience today. This was hands-down the most enjoyable piano lesson I've ever had. See you next week!

  • @MishaSkripach

The main downside of the skype lessons is the price? as the teacher could attempt to charge the same high rate, as for the real presense lesson! As for the skype lessons there are many very competent teachers in many parts of the world who would teach for 1/6 of the cost of the lesson, so it depends on how much the lessons are charged for.

The point about being able to play on your own piano is a really good point - I remember my childhood teacher's piano had the music stand much higher than mine and it always threw me and was frustrating as I could never play as well as I had at home

Wouldn't it be better to use a mic on a shock mounted boom? Then you could position it anywhere you want. Radio stations do this for a reason! It probably works! Actually there should be a mic for the piano and a mic for the teacher. And the same at the student's end. Using a mic that will pick up all the sounds of the room seems very unwise. What you want is a highly directional mic that picks up only the sounds you want. Do you want traffic noise from outside? Directional mics give you control. One challenge is the headset. Do you want to wear a headset while playing for your teacher? Will the cord get in the way? If the monitoring speaker is set low and the mic is directional feedback shouldn't be an issue so no headset would be necessary. There is really quite a lot to consider that we just take for granted when doing it live. Cameras: This would be far better if there were 2. One closeup at the keys and one to view the student's posture though the latter may only be needed for beginners.
The end result of this means a teacher can live in a country with no income tax on foreign income resulting in lower costs for the student. It might be very difficult to purchase a quality piano so one may have to be content with a digital one. But a digital signal from the piano may be able to be transmitted digitally - no mic necessary. That has to have some advantages.

Piano teachers in Russia know English very well. They charge about £15 $20 an hour, and would give far more thorough tuition than the majority of piano teachers in the UK. The best UK piano teachers are Russian and post-Soviet immigrants anyway...

    Interesting, and a great video.
I would agree your 95% might be possible, though only in ideal conditions with an intermediate+ standard student. (It might even be 100% useful in certain scenarios like a 2nd pair of ears before a performance.)
I would caveat this with saying the final 1% is often what 'makes' music, musicians, and teaching - let alone 5%.
I would say 60-85% is more the reality for the younger student, and would discourage a parent thinking online lessons for (in particular) their young beginner is going to a valid alternative to real lessons.
An exception might be if the parent has some musical knowledge and is backing you up in a productive fashion - you might get to the 85%.
1 example; For beginners+ accompanying is such a valuable tool... (accompanying as opposed to playing to a backing that is...)...
Another important factor with beginners is to achieve maximum focus on tackling the reading barrier - often by pointing to music in front of them, sometimes while they play. There may be ways round this but it won't be the same.
Top tip - make sure your student's internet connection is not downgraded by someone trying to stream in HD simultaneously in the next room! - You are at the mercy of the student's equipment/connection/baby sister...

It does not work for students who don't know the notes. The teacher has to sit next the students to help figure out the location of the notes on the keyboard, to demonstrate it and show the notes in the piece itself. Very inconvenient for the beginners from my own teaching experience.

Playing duets online is impossible, there is always a second or more of lagging. You can test it, if you play with someone, one of you count to three and clap (even with a metronome) one side is going to clap off time.

The only way to make it work: is for one person to play and mute their friend. While the other person plays along and enjoys the feeling to play the duet. So their is no chemistry, and you can't sync ralentendos... I found facebook video calls to have the least amount of latency, but when muted it all doesn't matter. lol. Try it out. good luck
