- In this episode of building my Dream Shop, I will be using a smart vapor barrier to make RRHQ super efficient. I share the details for air and vapor control using siga majrex as well as other amazing products like fentrim and rissan. All the insulation in the world won't help if you don't control your air and vapor properly.

If only more CEO and sales managers visited projects to learn their product and how end users applied the products and took time to share with the engineering side of development we could be much more efficient and have many more great products available with tested application methods. Otherwise we have bean counters worrying about profits of the company instead of the products performance and application methods and a company just trying to sell a product with a high margin of profit without any care if the product can preform as stated in their literature. The fact that higher up SIGA reps showed up to gain some input to take back to the business and hopefully R&D persons is a good start.
True. And Cobalt, unfortunately that’s not gonna happen. Those desk jockeys don’t care. They think because they went to school they’re smarter than us field guys.
Practical field knowledge is way more valuable than paper knowledge. And again, unfortunately these companies don’t see that and never give any of us a shot because we don’t have a piece of paper to show them.
@@JASPACB750RRI wouldn’t necessarily say field knowledge is more valuable, but equally as valuable. The best installer in the world can’t install if those desk guys don’t keep procurement happening, the money going where it needs, and providing strategic expansion to grow the products. That being said, an administrative knowledge is excessively misguided without the practical knowledge of real world application and use. Same the other way. The field guys should understand at least on a high level the point of what goes on in the office. The office grows the company to let the field do the work.
The CEO showing up and not only working, but taking the time to learn your process, listen, and teach about the product is really outstanding. I wish more builders mimicked RR and more CEO’s were like this guy. Great video.

what an incredible collaboration. The CEO of a major company on hands and knees getting direct feedback on best practice methods for his products. It does not get any better than this. incredible build, incredible builders incredible manufacturer and product.

Having a CEO actually get in the field and work with the product instead of showing up, watch and then leave speaks volumes about the company. He’s a believer in the product he represents, cares about the performance and gets real life criticism from people who actually install it besides in a controlled lab. I can easily get behind a company and buy their product when having a CEO like that.

As your shop sits right now, it’s 10 times better than 95% of the houses being built in Louisiana, hands down. You would flip out and loose your 💩 at what passes code for new construction here. For instance, the builder that built my house, tried to use 3-1/2” insulation in all the 6” walls!! I told his subs to leave and I spent all weekend fixing and redoing all that. They ran out of insulation and ripped the 3-1/2 in half and shoved the halves in the wall cavities. I wish I could post the pictures!! Anyway man, your attention to detail makes me think about my jobs details before I do them.
More like 95% of all north american homes. We are ridiculously behind European home builders.
Great video it’s nice to see someone work on fixing problems, then not worrying about them. The bottom tape, maybe making a squeegee with a notch in it to keep everything uniform. That looks like a very good product. You make great videos on how to properly build something I’ve been following you for years. From the very first video, I seen you pull out the offset snips I knew you knew what you were doing. I’ve been doing sheet metal for 41 years and you are on the right track on making things look good and watertight. Greg is lucky to have a teacher like you and you are lucky to have a student like Greg keep up the good work. One thing do you have a filter on the backside of that heater to filter the air in the building I see you guys sweeping, keep your lungs clear for a long life . we need to keep good workers like you two around.
I cannot wait to see what blower door numbers Kyle can get in a building with a garage door and what he does to try and air seal the garage door.

Thats what makes this overkill. I haven't been following this build but I assume a shop has large overhead doors which is going to negate the use of these products. The flip side is that he's not paying for the siga products if the rep is there. The amount of time wrapped up in these details cannot be ignored. Energy efficiency = good but I think the payback is not going to be realized in his lifetime.
This is such an awesome build to follow, and that siga looks damn good on the walls!
When trying to fold the tape at the bottom, a suggestion would be to push a straight edge between two post right above where you attached the 1/4 fold, then the entire bay of barrier is in line with the posts. Then you just fold and stick the tape down.
That was my thought too. I was honestly surprised Kyle didn't think of that when he brought over the 2x to see if it sat flush, he normally has tricks for just about everything.
This has been a great series, really looking forward to seeing the finished product! I will say watching you crawl around on the concrete without kneepads in the beginning makes my knees ache lol
It's "good enough for who it's for", one might say it's overkill for a shop. I'd be living in there!! 👍

I used Siga on an exterior remodel. We used a house wrap, Dupont drain wrap, and their tape for openings and seams. Also used Siga for the sheathing seams. The Dupont tape was expensive junk. The Siga we had left and used on half or more of the openings and house wrap seams worked WAY BETTER! Weatherlogic or similar products along with Siga is 100% the way to go!
Loving the concept of a full envelope inside the building I am definitely anticipating the airflow test you talked about.
So impressive. Those tapes are really sticky. So helpful to see how to progressively remove the backing while applying the tape so as not to get tape stuck to tape.

@@RRBuildingsAmerican houses and buildings are glorified shanty towns from Africa in the way there built. Pretty crazy when you compare them to European buildings in England and parts of Europe we use stills and brick. None the less use are great craftsman.

Oh I see. Greg was mad when you were using his red Martinez hammer to scrape up foam, but HE is back there hammering on concrete. Seems about right.

adding a steel angle on the concrete of even just 5cm to contain the insulation between the columns would probably help you fit the tape perfectly into the corner creating a perfectly straight line to the columns.

Great video, Kyle! The tips and tricks are gold. I know plenty will say this is overkill for a "shop," but not everyone appreciates what some of us call our "shop." I have been eyeing using the SIGA product on my build. Trying to find it locally is the challenge as freight for those rolls is ridiculous!
@RR Buildings I'm a MEP guy that has been in building since I was a kid helping me dad with his small company doing aluminum siding and roofing. I love geeking out over the way you detail these buildings out. Since this is your own shop you should take the opportunity to do a video on the decisions you have made regarding your choices for building mechanicals. I see a lot of people missing opportunities to rough things in because they haven't thought ahead about how the finished product will be used. Also they neglect to future proof their building for growth. As contractors we sometimes take for granted that things will happen a certain way because we have had a lot of experiences that have guided us. For a person that has never built anything before the blank canvas can be overwhelming and a lot of things can get missed. For example adding ceiling fans to keep the warm air from becoming stratified up against the ceiling, if your electric panel is recessed in the wall run a few extra conduits up to the ceiling to make adding to the panel later a lot easier.

About 14:40 I WAS wondering about electrical, then just before you commented about it I realized, basically a "commercial" building/garage area. So surface mount metal conduit and electrical boxes it is!
For me surface mounted conduit is the only way to wire a shop. Then it is super easy to make changes as equipment is replaced or added.
@@dougdiplacido2406 I agree 110% with that. My dream shop/garage is going to be through oversized metal conduit as will be the basement and possibly the attic of my next home.

Kyle is installing another wall in front of the existing wall, this wall will house the elictrical I believe....
It will get another layer of 2x material, wiring will have a huge 1 1/2 channel.
I’d love to see a blower door follow by an aero barrier application and see how much it changes by. Matt Risinger did a cool video on this a few years ago.

I didn't use majrex on my last build but I did use fentrim to secure zip sheathing to concrete foundation. Really good tape product.

you can get a caulk for majrex and other vapor barriers, that can be used on most if not all surfaces. its sticky as heck and never dries. it looks to be a much simpler and more forgiving install than the tape, on the bottom where you are sealing to concrete
Can't wait to see the next stages. Very curious how you'll be detailing any (?) penetrations... I assume fastening the inside surface material, whatever you use, will punch through into the studs, but like Zip sheathing, will self heal and stay sealed. Super interesting. Thanks for walking us through.

I would put a tape first, from the concrete to the post, then put the vapor barrier. Sems like its easier to tape the concrete first then after when you have to be that precisely. Love the content, it is likely the same way we build houses in Sweden. Keep it up!
It’s that 20 minutes a day turns into an extra month of work and effort a year.
And at the end of 5 years you will be better than 99% of the rest who didn’t.

it looks great guys.first thing I would build is a jig to hold that roll on the side of the lift so you just have to unroll it.save Gregs arms.
I usually tape the majrex down to the concrete after I have installed the first board. Then i know ill get i right between the post. Greate vid!

SIGA Majrex 200 is a 12mil vapor control layer. When using their adhesive tape it’s best to apply pressure by using a roller.
Love watching you guys work together! Been a fan for a long time. Nice to see the CEO of a massive company showing up and putting in some work. We use a lot of Siga products here in Norway, quick question: Wouldn't it be easier to use the Siga Sicrall tape (the yellow one) for those long straight tape joints? I thought Rissan was the flexible tape used more around openings and such.
Overall, if everyone would take their jobs as serious as you do, we’d all be in such a better place! I had a boss tell me all the time, “we’re not building the Taj Mahal!” You think the builders of the Taj Mahal said something that stupid? If you put effort into anything go all the way, because you know you did your best and can also learn from every situation to get better. I really appreciate RR’s commitment to excellence!

just to try and add to the pros of this stuff i feel like by sealing the entire building in the myrex, you are also creating a dust barrier from the rockwool and improving the quality of air in the building too by further separating yourself from materials that put off dust, i know youll be doing framing and such but the myrex should be enough that no matter what happens there wouldnt be airborne insulation floating around... its kind of like how i feel like ever since i had a drop ceiling put in in the one room in mah house that after being in there for a few hours my nose gets stuffy becuase of the partical board just makes the air quality worse whenever im in that room

Going to be interesting to see how the garage door seal is done. You’re only as strong as the weakest link. All this detailed sealing is great but damn garage doors always leak.
can you do a cost benefit analysis, including labor costs, for having spray foam vs the hand installed insulation plus the vapor barrier?
It's not always cost.
For this type construction with exterior air barier,spray foam would have to be open cell which has less R-value than closed.
Over time as framing cycles with moisture and temperature ,it typically breaks loose.
Spray foam can also cause major issues if the temperature or mix is off when spraying occurs.
It most certainly could be closed cell normal spray foam. It would provide a complete exterior air barrier.
The question is correct, cost benefit and value. This current approach is not affordable for anyone who would have to pay for all materials and labor.
The half-life of spray foam also means the best performance occurs when it is installed, and you get decreasing performance with time
This is something most people miss or haven’t been educated about. I def need to add this to my spray foam vs Rockwool video

Interesting insulation method. I wonder though if all the extra labor offsets any savings from just doing the spray foam. I get this is your own labor and maybe that makes the difference. Spray foam would give the air barrier and insulation value in one shot plus give additional wall rigidity.
I think a 2 or 3 inch wide by 1/4 inch flat iron long enough to go from post to post would work to straighten the bottom. Push it in , edge on so it doesn't flex, and it would push the insulation in. Would work as long as you weren't pushing so hard you couldn't pull the tape off.
This is going to be a super building. However, most folks are not going to be able to afford the cost of these materials and labor to install. You will also have little chance of finding a crew as skilled as RR with their work ethic. A DIY guy can take some of this and install what his budget can afford.
Would you put this on interior residential bathrooms like behind showers as well? What about after it's drywalled and there is a bunch of nail holes piercing the drywall and majrex over the years? Doesnt seem like any good way to patch for that.
On that day, Etienne learned what a fish mouth was and he will never, ever, do it again. This shop is going to be so comfortable. Well done guys!
Love this wall system. It's nicely air and weather sealed with a good amount of insulation (looks to be about R-30 nominal). This would be a very nice (somewhat) affordable wall system for a home, but it seems overkill for a shop, to be honest.
I used acoustic caulk instead of tape to seal the vapor barrier. It's cheap and easy. Curious on your thoughts on pros/cons vs the tape.
Seems like I've seen every fastener, roll of tape, board, sheet, panel, etc installed in this RRHQ2.0 shop. I feel apart of this build however remote I am. The open house is going to be epic

I would have done a 4 to 6" curb and made it flush with the framing but yes, you can rout out or table saw out a dado to make it fit flush.
I always tie the bottom of the vapor barrier in place with acoustic sealant (black).
