    Lived in Providence for five years (1998 -2003). My home was to the west of the capitol building. Could walk to downtown. MY youngest daughter was born in Providence. We absolutely loved our time there. Since we were transplanted from New Jersey, the weather wasn't a problem for us. There was always so many things to do and enjoy year round. My family still misses not living in The Greatest Little City In America. It looks more beautiful now than it did in 2003.
    Thank you for the memories.

    Resident of Providence here. Thank you for doing a lovely view of the city, I am so used to fellow RhodeIslanders trash talking PVD. There is so much art, amazing restaurants, cultural events. If you ever get a chance to see Waterfire it is neat. The original RI charter can be viewed at the statehouse. The state house has the 4th largest free standing dome. Providence also has many nice parks and waterfront. I am glad to have found your channel, than you for sharing your journey.

    My dad graduated from Brown University many years ago, and as a child I was excited to go on my first plane ride. BTW.....the unofficial State Motto is "Welcome to Rhode Island. You have just left Rhode Island.". 😎

    Yes the mall is home to micro apts on the upper level. There are 48 micro mini lofts starting at $550 a month.

    What a great documentarian you are-nice easygoing style. I love the way you blend visits to the upscale neighborhoods, the ghettos, historical landmarks, points of cultural interest, the good, the-not-so-good, the cheesy. I've become addicted to your travels so much so I've been binge-watching them. Fabulous work, Lord Spoda.

You guys missed out on a few spots around the city... prospect terrace.. they have a statue of Roger Williams..founder of providence,over looking city.. the old state house was actually a few streets away from the state house you visited .. the first Baptist church in America is also around that area and Roger Williams memorial park, where I believe was the very first settlement of providence was also In that area. You should come visit again and check it out.. it's pretty cool 😎. Great video👍

    You were in that shopping center where you made a lot of comments on the narrow halls of the shopping center. Those were apartments on the 2nd and 3rd levels in that shopping center. I remember reading something about it, here's an idea to transform some space from unneeded retail space to maybe needed residential space.

    Lived in RI in 2020 it is a great City and so safe. This video is so different to the other ones you do, showing the bad sides and run down area's. I had almost given up on the USA have noticed though all the Capital buildings in the States are fantastic. What I did remember was how long the snow lasted and whenever any works to the utilities a Police car was there with it's lights flashing.

    Love your videos! Keep em' coming. I would like to offer a correction on a small piece of information you provided. The first indoor shopping mall in America was Southdale Mall in Edina, MN. This is what sparked the construction of the largest mall in the U.S., which is the Mall of America in the Twin Cities.

    • @JoeandNicsRoadTrip

      @@JoeandNicsRoadTrip This is a good point. Minneapolis is known for its emphasis on retail. The area is an economic powerhouse. Perhaps you should visit there. From your commentary on prior videos, I know you are big into architecture. The Twin Cities has some astounding architecture. Give it a try.

      The Southdale Mall was the first indoor climate controlled shopping center (opened in 1956). The Providence Arcade was the first indoor shopping center (built in 1828, 128 years before the Southdale was built) I believe it is on the National Register. They created a bunch of micro apartments, basically studio apartments I believe, on the top 2 floors. 💕

    • @matthearne4849
      @matthearne4849 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robine916 According to Wikipedia and other sources, Southdale Mall is the first and the oldest fully enclosed, 'climate-controlled' shopping mall in the United States. By definition, a mall, as we know it, is a 'fully climate controlled' environment (this is an important distinction). If the Providence Arcade was a true mall, the Mall of America would cease to exist in Minnesota. Instead, it would be located in Rhode Island. There is a reason why Minnesota (Minneapolis/St. Paul) was chosen as the site for the Mall of America, which is the largest climate controlled mall in the United States. Thank you!

    They fixed up the city and moved the river back in the '90s I think, under infamous Mayor Buddy Cianci. Also, Kennedy Plaza is the big bus transfer station in RI. You can get a bus here and go all over the state, even to Newport and the beaches, not just the city proper. They cleaned up the area a few years ago. It used to be the pits of the city and the politicians didn't want the first impression of tourists to be such a h*ll hole. They moved the commuter line stops across Burnside Park. It still is congested in the afternoons when the kids get out of school (they take the city bus to and from school) up into the end of the afternoon commute. You didn't go inside the bus station. It's where the homeless hang out all day. Even outside is still a place where many drug deals take place and the homeless hang out - out in the plaza near the bus platforms and across the street near the CVS and the other side in Burnside Park. When you have to go down there every day it's hard to see the beauty but when you take a step back (I moved to VA in the Appalachians in 2020) you can see the beauty, as I still saw the beauty every now and then when I lived there. And yes, Waterfire is something else. Where did you stay? You didn't rate the hotel. Yes, The Biltmore is nice, as is the Westin. I think there's a Marriott across from Burnside Park that is nice as well. It's across from the Providence Place Mall as well. I've been travelling myself lately as well as binge-watching your videos and all in all, I think we had it pretty good, all things considering.
