Hi Katie, it was great to see you on Sunday at the Garmin Ride Out, I was the one who grabbed a selfie with you outside the Marquee wearing a Mendip Cycling Club shirt. Next time that you are down this part of the world come and join us on a club ride, we can find plenty of hills for you to make you feel at home

I finally have a bike and managed my first tiny adventure on it (5 miles out and 5 miles back) - which for somebody who hasn't cycled in 10 years and has ME is pretty damn good. I'm so excited to start gradually increasing the distance and have more adventures

We bought cheap mountains bikes when I was about fifty, started with the local park, built up to day rides, weekends then every summer holiday touring New Zealand (we are Australian) with tents and panniers. When we retired we took our bikes to Europe every year and toured a different country each trip. Got fed up of the 24 hour flights so we moved to France and now Switzerland. Now 78, still cycling or hiking every day.
So you don't know where these things will lead but for us it has been a fantastic journey - good luck with yours.

Good for you! And learn a lesson from Katie and do check your tire pressure frequently. I check before every ride, but I recommend checking every 3 days (yes, bike tires can lose pressure that fast!)

9 weeks off my bike, from June 11th to August 13th, due to coming down with shingles. Was doing 125-130 miles each Sunday, and 30-35 miles twice during the week. Gained 25 lbs and I was afraid that I'd lost all my fitness, but my 1st ride back went far better than expected. The hills were tougher, and I was a little slower than before, but that was about it. The temps have been steadily 106°-110°, and I'm 58 years old, so if I can do it then you can too.
    Get well soon!

Just fell of my bike last week and have an elbow fracture. Hopefully a couple more weeks to recover for myself. Last year was broken collarbone lol.
I realized that cycling was my only stress reliever 😅. I think this is part of cycling to get injured from time to time.

Glad to see you back Katie!!....it's a curious thing when you follow a TH-cam in as much as you get used to seeing them every week like you would a friend. Unlike a friend however you can't just ring them up to see if they are ok :(. Didn't want to impose by messaging. Hope you get it sorted and look forward to the next vid.

I’d ride it out by changing cycling position such as keeping your hands on the lower bars instead of gripping the levers continuing to exercise helps most in my experience. If you want to hear another happy/sad cycling story here`s mine from last coulpe of days.
First of all i signed in on my first ever bike race, yay. Then during a training my frame broke :(
I ordered a new bike, yay. But i have to wait 6-10 weeks to get it (waaay after my race) :(
I cobbled a bike shaped object just to be able to train from parts laying around, yay. Got on a training ride and had a crash :(
Now i have some stitches on my face :( and almost every day i get a delivery with parts for my new bike :)

sorry to hear about your thumb. tbh, if 4 courses of antibiotics don't do anything, its not likely an infection. You should have an MRI of the thumb base to rule out scaphoid fracture (pressure and road vibration can fracture the scaphoid and that fracture can be notoriously difficult to diagnose, but a good MRI will see the break where Xrays can be negative)

OMG i had the same thing but in my wrist, when i was in France. I never had so much pain in my life. I was taking baths in the middle of the night to see if water would help. I never found out what caused it but mine was better sooner than yours. I always wondered if it was a bite but there was no evidence of any bite. That was 30 years ago and the pain was so bad ive never forgotten it.
In 2020 I came off the bike and landed on my thumb, bent backwards. I was off the bike for three weeks and I cried over it, as cycling is my favourite thing. I thought I'd never be better. I didn't have di2 and my gear shifters were so stiff that sometimes I had to shift the large rings with my other hand (a recipe for another accident!!) It took about 18 months to properly feel better. But now it feels perfectly normal and I never thought it would.
I'm saying all this here because there will be people here that know how I feel, whereas all the non-cyclists in my life just didn't understand 😂😢
I hope youre soon fully recovered!

Oh man, tire pressure will get ya! I did a 90k ride a few weeks ago and forgot to check the pressure in my tires beforehand. They were brand new and didn't have enough sealant and would go from 60lbs to 30lbs overnight. Well I did 90k with 30lbs and was dying. My knees hurt and I couldn't keep up. The next weekend I made sure they were properly aired and did a 125k ride no problems.

I have had surgeries before that has kept me off the bike from up to 3-4 months. Remarkably, I have always been quickly able to regain my fitness. I think once you get to a certain level of fitness that it doesn't take as much to get back there. Unfortunately, the older you get the harder it is to recover from injury especially overuse injuries. I have suffered numerous overuse injuries, but as an older woman at 58 I am still riding my bike with a bunch of younger dudes. You are young and it will take no time at all to get back out there. Wishing you the best in your recovery and love your videos!

Hope you get well soon. I agree sounds like an infection, did they check for lime disease, are they sending you to a disease specialist. Please find the answer unknown diseases from another country can be anything from a mind infection to near death. I knew a guy who went caving with a group in Belize, everyone was find except him. Two weeks back he went into a coma and stayed that way for 1.5 years before he woke up. he is still not quite right but 70 % back to normal.

I'm no doctor but since you remember no impact bite or cut, could it possibly be a bursitis? This can be caused by repetitive low pressure on a joint... like weight through your hands onto the handle bars maybe. Since you have had a new bike, check to see if your hand position has changed slightly etc. Are the bars the same width? Do they have flare more than your usual set up? which would all change the angle of your wrists and hands / pressure points particularly on the hoods. Is your body angle the same with the same reach leading to slightly more pressure perhaps.
Historically I don't think you ride with gloves might be time to try a pair. ( I could be mistaken) They should have picked that up at the hospital if it was, and antibiotics should shift it. But it would need time to desensitise against repeat flare ups if it was bursitis. Unfortunately I know all to well! Either way speedy recovery.
