      3:53-4:12 on the yt vid for it, you’ll have to listen closely to the bass to hear it tho bc he did some crazy filtering on it

    It is always a delight to discover a new J Dilla beat. Imagine how many are out there as I read how he used to get up, start working, take lunch, then go back at it. This was over a period of years so just the thought of how many undiscovered beats are yet to be heard.

    he’s the reason i started filtering samples.
    pete rock & lord finesse are also v good at filtering, but the way dilla filtered his samples throughout a whole beat (like in this song) as opposed to when he’d filter samples when it was time for a verse in his beats he did for Slum creates this weird, wavy dynamic to music. idk how to explain this at all but it just leaves you questioning about wtf u just heard when a sample is filtered throughout a whole beat like in this one. shit rlly is hypnotic as hell.
    i can rlly nerd out on some audio engineering ish as to why filtering is so dope (depth, low end mixing, etc.) but nonetheless, this approach to production just makes u wanna listen to more. 🤷🏽‍♂️
    rip jay. luv.

      It sounds SO warm, just the right balance of full and resonant down in those low mids. It all blends with the bass and kick so well to create this one continuous sound with only the hats, snares and vocals sticking out, maybe an occasional chimy sparkly sound in the high mids etc.
      Even when the sample wasn't a part of the kick/bass, you can tell Dilla really thinks about how elements sit together and groove, Flowers is a good example of this, the kick and bass are making perfect phrases together.
      It's also crazy that low-pass can sometimes get rid of color tones and all their harmonics, then you can have even more freedom. I mostly write from scratch and use weird vocoders/filters/freq-shifters/distortion/whatever to get these warm and textured sounds rather than the sterile sounds you usually get from dry synths or even e-pianos etc., but sampling is still something I love so much, and when you strip down the right sample and compliment it with these techniques, it's just crazy.

    • @mhaluuun93
      @mhaluuun93 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Gnurklesquimp facts. this might b a bit controversial (per engineering “standards”), but if u add a touch of some reverb on whatever low end you added, the sound creates even more of an experience for the listener. that shit takes u str8 to da cosmos 🪐

      @@mhaluuun93 Many would gasp, but I've heard plenty of music where this sounded great. I think they do it a lot in dub too, along with the crazy out of sync delays etc., gonna sound a bit messier but that can be a good thing.
      Ambient and Techno also have some great noisy atonal rumble bass that I've been looking into, a kick, a rumble bass AND a normal tonal bass working together to create a low-end groove is just crazy, can sound super percussive.
