  • Northern Ontario is a place famous for underground hard rock mining. There are many mining towns scattered all over the north. We explore the various towns and the mines that shaped the region.
Virginiatown Ontario is a small mining community near the border with Quebec. The Kerr Addison mine was one of the richest mines in North america. There are mines going under the highway, and there is concern of collapse in areas. Larder Lake was used as a tailings dump for the mine. It also has a few gold mines
We continue on to the end of the Cadillac fault mineral deposit, Kirkland Lake. A famous town of Northern Ontario, it has a lot of mining history. The Toburn gold mine headframe stands in the town as a reminder of the history. There is a lot to see about the tools, workers, and minerals that came out of this incredible region.

The early history of the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) fits in with a lot of your videos. Below is a very brief and simple summary.
The immediate idea to establish the RCM was to mint Klondike ores into gold coins. The legislation would authorize a RCM to hire people, purchase land & equipment, etc was approved about 1901. By that time, however, the Klondike had basically given out so the Gov't did not budget any money for the RCM.
By 1906 things are looking a lot different! The Abiti gold belt production is now significant plus two years before, a silver refinery at Trail had opened. Gov't now funds the RCM to make it a practical reality. It opened in 1908 using Abiti gold and Trail silver for its precious metal coins!
Trust you find this comment constructive.
Keep up the good and interesting work!
    Regards Glenn.

Another awesome vid. I knew the second you showed the rock cuts on the highway, you were in Northern Ontario. Again, keep an eye out for those nasty long horn pine beetles, they are big, nasty and will take your arm off.

Good Video! I think the significance of 1908 on the gold coin is that was the year the Royal Canadian Mint in Ottawa started operations.

You 'Missed' Timmins ON in the famous 'Porcupine Mining Camp' about 100 miles northwest of Kirkland Lake, your loss!
