Swathi Sangeethotsavam 2017 - Thaniyavarthanam - B.Harikumar, Dr.S.Karthick, Payyannur Govindaprasad

Fantastic Thaniyavarthanam by Sri B.Harikumar, Dr.S.Karthick and Payyannoor Sri Govindaprasad, during Prince Rama Varma's concert at the Swathi Sangeethotsavam, held at Kuthiramalika Palace, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India, every year from the 4th until the 13th of January.
It was completely thanks to Varmaji's exhuberant responses to his accompanists when they play, that I gradually started to appreciate percussion and I have rarely enjoyed a team as much as the great masters in this video; particularly when they play for Varmaji.

Actually Varmaji has always been a champion for Upapakkavadyams and even for Konnakol. He has made upapakkavadyams like Ghatam and Morsing a regular thing for all the concerts at his festival. This year , at the Swathi Sangeethotsavam were excellent Morsing artists like Govindaprasad, Bangalore Rajasekhar, Bhagyalakshmi and Thirunakkara Rethish were featured, Varma ji actually announced in public that along with this being a Swathi music festival, it was also a Morsing festival since all these artists were so brilliant :)

Can someone please explain why Ghatam Karthic decided to do konnakol when he is playing a ghatam?

Just to make it more interesting... u can see prince talking to Karthik... and it could have been a request("Please don't take my word to court, but a possibility"). However, that made concert more lively..... Also I think some foreigners were there and this helps them understand Indian music system better.
