    This is a more complicated and interesting process than I thought it was. Being new to the sport, I assumed that each driver got to drive a few laps on an empty circuit and the best lap time would determine the grid position of all 20 drivers (sort of like on Top Gear).

    On the pre-2006 qualifying, drivers would take turns in qualifying based on the reversed order of the previous race result instead of elimination system. This is called "one-shot qualifying", where drivers have ONLY one lap to set a quali time. And for the fuel, you use the same fuel load from qualifying in the race.

    How are grid positions set in qualifying session

    • @ItsFPS
      @ItsFPS 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In Quali drivers will drive out of their "pit boxes/garages" and will start a lap time the moment they cross the start/finish line.
      In Q1 all 20 drivers will set a time. The slowest 5 drivers will end up being P16-P20 in the order of their fastest lap.
      In Q2 the 15 drivers remaining will set a time. The slowest 5 drivers will end up being P11-P15 in the order of their fastest lap.
      In Q3 the 10 drivers remaining will set a time. The order of P1-P10 will be determined by their fastest lap.

      Thanks for the question. I do not believe there is a minimum / maximum on how many laps a driver can complete during each session.
      The outlap when the driver leaves the pitstop is not counted, but all others are counted and best time is taken .

    In the qualifying sessions, are the cars "spread out" amongst each other so they can fly down a wide open road without having to worry about colliding with each other? I'm new to F1 and I'm trying to figure why is it always the same drivers in the top 5 and bottom 5. Are elite drivers like Hamilton and Verstappen simply just "better" than everyone else, or is there more to it that gives them the top qualifying positions for every race?

    • @moo2793

      i’m new too but ik that the top drivers do so much better bc of their cars

    • @F1Education
      @F1Education  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Thanks for the comment Mark. I would say 75% car performance and 25% driver skill. Good example is George Russell - when he got a chance to drive Mercedes last year he qualified P2 and at Williams there is only a very small chance of starting in the top 10.

  • @hotfiyah
    @hotfiyah 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I still don't understand why they send everybody out on the track at one time, to me it seems like all that does is put slower cars in the way of faster cars and invites the chance for people screwing up their qualifying laps or crashes. How many times have we seen someone almost hit another driver or have to swerve off the racing line.

    What is the difference between qualifying and free practice

    • @MP-op4su
      @MP-op4su 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Free practice, just like the name is a practice session to get to know the track. There is no need to set a specific time. Just need to get used to the tracks and cars before qualifying. Qualifying is just like this video explained, the session to decide the orders/start position based on whose time are the fastest (only qualifying time, not practice time)

    This is highly unfair. Those who start behind face traffic ahead and thus are less likely to register good lap times and get a pole position. what they should do is standardize the car and only allow 1 or 2 drivers at a time. This will ensure good drivers dont suffer from crappy cars and the starting position

    • @F1Education
      @F1Education  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That’s a good question. It is determined by the overall fastest lap in the session. As an example in Q1 the 5 that are eliminated will take grid positions 16-20 based on their best lap time in the session (slowest will be 20th and the quickest will be 16th).

    I think there’s a way to make F1 far more exciting than it is now. Eliminate qualifying. Whoever has the lowest total points so far in the season starts at the front, those with the most points start from the rear. It would eliminate the ‘rich getting richer’ system we have now, with the wealthiest teams always winning. And the best drivers would excel, despite not necessarily being in the most expensive cars. They’d have to consistently win from the back. This could actually make F1 exciting to watch.

    question, who gets pole position on quali? like who goes in P2,P3 etc? how do they decide the position of the drivers in qualifying?

    • @F1Education
      @F1Education  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the question. The top ten driving order is determined in the last qualifying session where 10 drivers compete. The driver with the fastest time in the last qualifying session is on Pole, 2nd fastest in P2 and so on.

    If Q2 tires have to be used in Q3, how can they use soft tires? Got a bit confused there..

    • @F1Education
      @F1Education  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Chiro - thanks for the comment. In 2021 the tires used to set the lap time in Q2 had to used to start the race. In 2022 this rule has been removed. Drivers have free tire choice to start the race.
