By the time "Annie Get your Gun" was released, this particular scene was getting a standing ovation from movie theater audiences. That says a lot about the impact this extraordinary and underrated performer had. Thanks Betty...
Sadly some actors no matter how good, they never get the credit they deserve!! Betty Hutton is every bit as good if not better as many other STARS so for me she is the BEST!! RIP
Betty Hutton was an exceptionally talented lady. She was definitely never boring! I've always loved her. She put her heart and soul into everything she did and it showed.
Betty Hutton is the best Annie Oakley ever! I own the 1950 MGM classic movie Annie Get Your Gun on videotape, Laser Disc, DVD and Blue Ray. I was born in 1978. Thank you for posting and sharing this movie magic! I love it!
Betty Hutton was so expressive with her whole body ! She put everything into her performance 🎭! No one was as good in this role as she was as Annie. All the others were great but Betty was SUPERIOR great !!
Betty said in her interview with Robert Osborne that she was treated by cast and crew like crap because they wanted Judy. I think Betty Did a much better job than Judy would have. I saw on this website that Judy had to be replaced in 3 movies by another actress. Betty being one of them. I think she was born to do this part. Love you Miss Hutton.
Garland was great, but she wouldn't have been right for this role. Her nervous, hesitant, "sensitive" style weren't a good fit for Annie. Hutton's all-out performance is perfect.
What will it be like if Judy respectfully gave the role to Betty and told the cast and crew to treat her better? That would've been brilliant if that was the case.
There is talent like this that still exists, but you won't find it in Hollywood or in any American film. You can still find great singers and acting on the Broadway stage or in regional theatre. I went to a nightclub in New York City last week and several female singers performed on their night off from their respective Broadway shows to perform in the club that night. They blew me away with their talent. They belted and interpreted songs much in the way Betty Hutton and Judy Garland did. But I doubt that these great singers and great actresses from the theatre will ever end up in today's movies as American movie industry executives are not interested in them. With few exceptions, personality is more important than having any special talent. The goal for many is to be a celebrity...not a star with talent.
So why do i like this so much?? Because she sings and acts the same time!! Her words touch my soul deeply because most my X women could kill me!! So this song touch a nerve each time i listen!! Betty Hutton deserves an OSCAR for this song!! Its from a movie!!
Betty leaves it all out there in a vastly entertaining performance which includes great acting, singing, and comedy- so glad she got this opportunity to show what she could do with a top musical-comedy role.
Always loved this performance. I think Hutton is perfect in the way she performs as an awkward but also confident young woman. I watched the Reba McEntire and Bernadette Peters versions of this song and I don't think they have the same youthful innocence. That's not to say they're not great in their own right or to criticise older actresses but I just think that Hutton's youthfulness and enthusiasm really work in this particular portrayal of Annie.
Made in the days where if you goofed your lines they would try again, then as the movie plays you could some times see the slight skip where the scene was fixed.
WOW. What a talent. She's so awesome. Love her songs, now just finding out about her movies and stage work. I'm happy to know I've got more Betty Hutton works to find and enjoy! Thank you Betty Hutton for blessing the world with your passion. 🙏
Over half a million views. More than most of her contemporaries. Betty Hutton seems to relate more to today than here in 1950. Maybe it's because no one has done this role better, before or since.
Betty was born for this role. I read that on at least 3 films Judy had to be replaced by another actress. This being one of them. Betty does this better than I think Judy would have,I've seen a few outtakes. I read that mgm wanted to buy Betty s contract from paramount but they said no. Too bad because 2 years later she walked out on paramount. She was a dynamic bundle of energy.💖🎥🎬🎶🌟💥
In this musical number Ms Betty Hutton had incredibly delivered frantic, dynamic, and comic performance.Clearly she had fairly acted out her entire scenes in the 1950 MGM's Annie Get Your Gun with all her heart and spirit. She's got the brilliance, the piquance, and the endurance to portray the real-life ace sharpshooter Annie Oakley. As s scruffy and unladylike gunslinger she was too anxious over not getting a man who would fall in love with her.Even if Ms Hutton had encountered some problems while doing this movie, nevertheless she had depicted her role winningly, cunningly, and fittingly. Moreover her movie has turned out to be one of MGM's most profitable, commendable, and enjoyable classic film musicals of all time. It's a hog-killin' time!
I love Betty Hutton! She is the perfect hillbilly. And for those of you who obviously have hardly or no theatrical experience, I do want to let you know that as an actress or dancer you will be forced into moving certain ways and saying certain things, but as a singer you can sing however you want unless you're acting along with singing, then you will be forced to sing a certain way! So, no more of this "Betty Hutton is boring" nonsense, and yes I said that nicely compared to what I might have said if all y'alls' comments were any worse!!!!!!!!
It’s sad to say they no longer share this film in my old chorus class due to the “gun violence” it was an ICONIC film that had been in our schools for generations.
As a dyed in the wool Merman/Martin fan, Betty has two tough acts to follow but tonight I've watched all three performances and have to admit that Betty brings her own wonderful magic to this number. We are lucky Betty came in to finish the job.
+Wayne Hobbins Yes, Judy Garland got sick because she was also finishing up two other musicals and was sick and too tired. Then the original Bill died as well and he was replaced by the one in the movie.
This is such a cute song and she sings it with such conviction " you can't shoot a male, in the tail, like a quail, Oh you can't git a man with a gun!" :D
She really was ahead of her time. The fact that she dressed, acted, and spoke deliberately like this instead of satisfying the demands of what was seen as feminine at the time is really inspiring. Wish she was still here with us :(
I loved her in. THE PERILS OF PAULINE, also. And she was great in THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH, with Charlton Heston, too. She was always one of my Favorites. I loved her spunk and whacky comedy. She was one of a kind❤️❤️
the rifle is obviously the character's male substitute. Look at the way she wraps her legs around it. the way she can't stop grabbing it. Betty Hutton was a genius performer. 2:08
This movie I saw at the Classic Cinema Croydon. ‘54??? I can’t tell you how big an influence it’s been in my life! It’s shaped the whole way I look at personal relationships, both business and personal. There you go!
hi ! I from Russia. some day before here showing betty hutton on channel KULTURA (about movie legends). it was amazing..NOW I BIG FAN FOR HER ))) miracle...
Betty Hutton could be so overachieving, viewers assumed she was merely a loud bombshell. But looking at her work today I find a professional who was a perfectionist, aiming higher than most of her contemporaries and always hitting her ambitious mark! She had an unbelievably productive year in 1952, releasing not merely "Annie" but DeMille's "The Greatest Show on Earth" and "Let's Dance" (in which she's the only partner to upstage Fred Astaire). Sadly, she also shot herself by angrily quitting Paramount and the movies. She would have one more movie, "Summer Reunion," an amateurishly-made "little" picture in which she co-stars with Dana Andrews.
Back in the 1950s, girls used to sing this with different lyrics at Smith College: You’re sharp as a pin point, Your marks are really ten point, You are Dean’s List, Sophia Smith - But if a man wants a kiss, kid, He doesn’t want a Quiz Kid - Oh, you can’t get a man with your brains! Your French may be flowing, Your Russian just as knowing, You may sprechen zie Deutsch with ease - But love for a man is The Universal language - Oh you can’t get a man with your brains! You might know the futility Of marginal utility And believe that our enterprise is free - But that’s irrespective Of love, which is collective, Oh, you can’t get a man with your brains! You may know Lucretius, And all the things he teaches, You may think with Socratic skill - But when a guy wants a mate, oh He isn’t quoting Plato, Oh, you can’t get a man with your brains! You have Joyce in your carrel And write like James T. Farrell, You recite all of Shakespeare’s plays - But you can’t get a Romeo With a Smith diplomee-oh. No, you can’t get a man with your brains!
Fantastic, and thank you. Betty Hutton believed that her appearance in "Anne Get Your Gun" effectively ended her career (although she went on to appear in "The Greatest Show on Earth" a little later). She couldn't get along with the other cast members, among other difficulties.
By the time "Annie Get your Gun" was released, this particular scene was getting a standing ovation from movie theater audiences. That says a lot about the impact this extraordinary and underrated performer had. Thanks Betty...
She's my favorite spitfire!
So sad how bad the rest of the CAST treated her on the set BROKE HER HEART... SHE SAID in an interview in her later years
Sadly some actors no matter how good, they never get the credit they deserve!! Betty Hutton is every bit as good if not better as many other STARS so for me she is the BEST!! RIP
No one brings this role to life for me like Betty Hutton. Absolutely no one. What a queen!
Betty Hutton was an exceptionally talented lady. She was definitely never boring! I've always loved her. She put her heart and soul into everything she did and it showed.
didnt her sister sing with glen miller?
Howard Keel too. Both very special.
Betty Hutton is the best Annie Oakley ever! I own the 1950 MGM classic movie Annie Get Your Gun on videotape, Laser Disc, DVD and Blue Ray. I was born in 1978. Thank you for posting and sharing this movie magic! I love it!
Stephen Sondheim said he wished he'd written this song, because it's arguably the most brilliant comic lyric ever written.
I've been raising my granddaughter on these gems💎
The One and ONLY -- Betty Hutton!💕
“A man may be hot
But he’s not
When he’s shot!”
My favorite lyric EVAH!
"A man may be hot but he's not when he's shot..." Irving Berlin must have been some witty guy in addition to his great compositions.
That is my Favorite part lol I love the way she says it.
Hard to believe it's 70 years ago. Betty kicks ass!
Betty Hutton was so expressive with her whole body ! She put everything into her performance 🎭! No one was as good in this role as she was as Annie. All the others were great but Betty was SUPERIOR great !!
This is also a fantastic song for altos to audition with in theatre!
Did she sing too?
Garland was great, but she wouldn't have been right for this role. Her nervous, hesitant, "sensitive" style weren't a good fit for Annie. Hutton's all-out performance is perfect.
100% This
What will it be like if Judy respectfully gave the role to Betty and told the cast and crew to treat her better? That would've been brilliant if that was the case.
@@reneastle8447 no they wouldn't, its a suprise they let her go after she went ill.
She still lives in our hearts. I have watch her in this film over and over. She cracks me up every time.
I FEEL SO OLD BUT THERE'S NO MOVIES OR ACTRESSES OR TALENT LIKE THIS ANYMORE. WHAT A JOY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was movies like these that took me to a whole new world.
The Perils of Pauline is one he best movies starring Betty Hutton. She was soooo talented!
There is talent like this that still exists, but you won't find it in Hollywood or in any American film. You can still find great singers and acting on the Broadway stage or in regional theatre. JACK ANTHONY
When I think of the most talented singers, Patsy Cline has always had my vote.
RUDE RUDE RUDE
70 years passed - the magic performance --- remained .
RIP!
I can watch this over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over
AGAIN!
I think there is very few people who could pull this off, be that entertaining and animated yet believable.
Betty was outstanding! She nailed this song.
I’m new to her many talents but not to her work …. What a great woman .
A Natural .
I love this performance from Betty Hutton. She captures perfectly the spirit of the song with wonderful
zest and agility.
Wonderful Betty! Amazing! She was terrific!
I love this song, but she makes it so special with her energy and attitude
She was made for this part, and for the stage too. She's so animated, that'd translate so well into live performance
"You Can't Get a Man With a Gun" by Betty Hutton. Truer words were never spoken.
Betty Hutton, as Annie Oakley, is a joy to watch and hear.
I have to come back here every so often.
What a marvelous talent.
SHE WAS GREAT IN *ANNIE GET YOUR GUN!!* LOVED IT.
So why do i like this so much?? Because she sings and acts the same time!! Her words touch my soul deeply because most my X women could kill me!! So this song touch a nerve each time i listen!! Betty Hutton deserves an OSCAR for this song!! Its from a movie!!
She is just so bloody fabulous!!! I love her as Annie.Oakley 💞💞💞💞
Betty was awesome. What talent! So charming, an icon!❤ just saw Annie get your gun on tcm today, it's glorious, they don't make em' like this anymore!
Betty leaves it all out there in a vastly entertaining performance which includes great acting, singing, and comedy- so glad she got this opportunity to show what she could do with a top musical-comedy role.
betty hutton as Annie is great..she was a great vocalist
She was great, and perfect in this role.
Always loved this performance. I think Hutton is perfect in the way she performs as an awkward but also confident young woman. That's not to say they're not great in their own right or to criticise older actresses but I just think that Hutton's youthfulness and enthusiasm really work in this particular portrayal of Annie.
Yes, Betty Hutton is an incomparable performer. Ethel Merman was afraid to follow her on stage!!!!!
Megan O'C M I completely agree
heck not even Judy Garland cuts it I heard her version of doin what comes naturally and it was nothing compared to Betty Hutton's version
Made in the days where if you goofed your lines they would try again, then as the movie plays you could some times see the slight skip where the scene was fixed.
Love Hutton. Reba was better.
WOW. What a talent. She's so awesome. Love her songs, now just finding out about her movies and stage work. I'm happy to know I've got more Betty Hutton works to find and enjoy!
Thank you Betty Hutton for blessing the world with your passion. 🙏
Extremely entertaining! She nails this number with her high energy, movement and expression.
She nails it! And Berlins lyrics so inventive and define Annie
They could do an entire Fallout game with nothing but Betty Hutton songs.
Literally came here to say something like this 🤣🤣
I used to listen to this on a 78 when I was a child.
Over half a million views. More than most of her contemporaries. Betty Hutton seems to relate more to today than here in 1950. Maybe it's because no one has done this role better, before or since.
She gave us a lot of joy.. Thank you, Betty!
I love it when she says “cain’t” ❤️
Oh god, she's got some talent! And original woman spread! Go girl! So happy to find her, this makes me happy!

She was Superb Great acting'singing and faces she could make Rip
Love how theatrical she is in this one!
She beautifully entertains us to this day.
This is the first film I ever saw. I remember by Grandad taking me I was about 5 or 6 I loved every minute.
Truly talented.she had so many personality on screen each time she looke like a different person.
Betty is miming her own voice in this clip... boy is it well done
It amazes me how animated she was! Love this performance:D

On the strength of this number alone, one would have to admit this was perfect casting.True entertainment !
Love Betty Hutton and her voice
I love Betty Hutton! She is the perfect hillbilly. The thing is Judy Garland was supposed to be Annie Oakley
Betty Hutton does this with her whole being. So much energy, enthusiasm and spirit.Totally looks the part
She’s just so friggin’ cute!
IT's a shame you haven't had many people on here because this is GREAT QUALITY!
I have it on dvd.I watch it a lot.I love it.
Look at the edit at 1:23, seamless but at the same time, the gun magically switches position.
SURE 'NOUGH, DOLL.
Also look at her mouth at 0:14.
I like when she starts tapping at 2:37 when she's clearly standing in grass and not wearing tap shoes.
I have a crush on betty damn im a century late
She could really sing. I wish there were more of her serious songs on TH-cam.
Priceless. And what amazing video quality.
She’s adorable 😆
HAH HAH!!! OH , ITS SO CUTE!!! LOVED IT.. LOVE THE WHOLE SHOW.
Judy Garland was originally cast for the Annie part and bowed out at the last moment.
The movie was twice as good with Betty.
+Wayne Hobbins Yes, Judy Garland got sick because she was also finishing up two other musicals and was sick and too tired. Then the original Bill died as well and he was replaced by the one in the movie.
Videos exist of Judy in some scenes. She was a terrible choice, so glad Betty got it.
+Lee Anne P. Judy Garland?
Judy didn't bow out. She was fired but she did film 2 numbers before that happened. They are on you tube.
Why was she fired?
She's such a great entertainer. Awesome performance. :)
"can't shoot a male in the tail like a quail!" Great lyrics
This is such a cute song and she sings it with such conviction " you can't shoot a male, in the tail, like a quail, Oh you can't git a man with a gun!" :D
A classic performance, great.
She really was ahead of her time. The fact that she dressed, acted, and spoke deliberately like this instead of satisfying the demands of what was seen as feminine at the time is really inspiring. Wish she was still here with us :(
i don’t think she wrote the musical
Are you referring to Annie or Betty?
Not really, your head has just been pumped full of false ideas about what the world used to see as feminine.
WAY, WAY, WAY Ahead!!!
Interstingly the real Annie, when she went on the road to prefrom, was determined to be considered "a lady" despite her gimmick being good at shooting
I immediately fell in love with this gorgeous gal, the instant I saw her. 😍🥰💕
On film - she was already long gone.😢
I loved her in. THE PERILS OF PAULINE, also. And she was great in THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH, with Charlton Heston, too. She was always one of my Favorites. I loved her spunk and whacky comedy. She was one of a kind❤️❤️
the rifle is obviously the character's male substitute. Look at the way she wraps her legs around it. the way she can't stop grabbing it. Betty Hutton was a genius performer. 2:08
Love her voice
Lillie Gordon great stuff
Beautifully mimed. A few hiccups but a magical scene. A great dance scene
This movie I saw at the Classic Cinema Croydon. ‘54???
I can’t tell you how big an influence it’s been in my life!
It’s shaped the whole way I look at personal relationships, both business and personal. There you go!
This is one of the greatest performances of all time. Count the cameras, count the takes. The camera crew had an easy day.
With a jaundiced eye
Save your counting, Two cameras, seven takes. Betty Hutton, I dips me lid in your direction Brava.
hi ! I from Russia. some day before here showing betty hutton on channel KULTURA (about movie legends). it was amazing..NOW I BIG FAN FOR HER ))) miracle...
She is so special
Story of my life...except I can't even shoot a gun.
*cain't...
Aw
Me too.
Betty Hutton could be so overachieving, viewers assumed she was merely a loud bombshell. Betty oozzed charisma and stage presence.....This is what they called "Star Power!"
Back in the 1950s, girls used to sing this with different lyrics at Smith College:
You’re sharp as a pin point,
Your marks are really ten point,
You are Dean’s List, Sophia Smith -
But if a man wants a kiss, kid,
He doesn’t want a Quiz Kid -
Oh, you can’t get a man with your brains!
Your French may be flowing,
Your Russian just as knowing,
You may sprechen zie Deutsch with ease -
But love for a man is
The Universal language -
Oh you can’t get a man with your brains!
You might know the futility
Of marginal utility
And believe that our enterprise is free -
But that’s irrespective
Of love, which is collective,
Oh, you can’t get a man with your brains!
You may know Lucretius,
And all the things he teaches,
You may think with Socratic skill -
But when a guy wants a mate, oh
He isn’t quoting Plato,
Oh, you can’t get a man with your brains!
You have Joyce in your carrel
And write like James T. Farrell,
You recite all of Shakespeare’s plays -
But you can’t get a Romeo
With a Smith diplomee-oh.
No, you can’t get a man with your brains!

Betty Hutton was so talented. Boy could she dance and sing.
Her voice is very strong. Beautiful.
We are watching this movie in chorus I live it!!
It's funny because she opens her mouth to sing and then it skips. They must have just spliced the two different takes together or something.
Angel Goldstein when
Diana Chocolate loving triceratops at 0:15

You're on next!
Wow one of the worst edit cuts I've ever seen
One of my fav songs
