CFA Level 1 Exam Tips for 2021

- The first round of examinations for CFA Level 1 starts in less than 2 weeks. And as much as everyone has been talking about the new computer based testing, myself included, its going to be extremely important for all you level 1 candidates to stay focused on what is most important, practice exams, and memorizing formulas.
In the last few weeks before any CFA exam, you should be hitting the practice exams hard. Many people recommend taking 2-3 full practice exams. I would put that number closer to 10+. Taking more practice exams certainly isn’t going to hurt your chances of passing. But almost as important as the quantity of practice exams is the quality of them. Here is how I approached these exams and was able to pass all 3 levels of the CFA on my first attempt.

I laughed a lot harder than I should have
Your exam strat in my opinion is the most effective way to learn. How I do it, and what I would advise, is do the ethics block first and time it, pause the timer after and mark it properly. Every mistake you make, make a flash card on the mistake or at least learn why you f’ed up. I find insulting yourself and writing IDIOT next to your answer will really ensure you don’t do it again. Then move on to the next section etc.
After postponing from December, the exam is less than 2 weeks away for me, watching this gives me good peace of mind. Doing loads of QBank questions, practice or 1/2-practice exams frequently, and I’m lining up for the big formula memorization at the end. Thank you for the continued tips, tremendously aided my studying habits recently!
I would recommend doing a ton of Q-bank on ethics the day before. While reading the answers + explanations, even on the ones you got right. For level 1, it’s actually so easy to get 70+ on ethics doing that. Even in one day of practice. Just easy marks. Anyway. Best of luck.

Thanks for your tips. I was scheduled to take the exam tomorrow morning (2/19/21) and just had my exam canceled (12 hours prior) because it may snow a couple inches in my area overnight. This is the 3rd time I’ve had the test canceled, as I was originally supposed to take it last June. I’m relentlessly demanding the testing center reschedules me for the next soonest appointment, but have yet to get any response. Nothing like working tirelessly for over a year just to have the exam canceled on 3 separate occasions.
That is insane! I have never heard of it being canceled for snow. Sorry for your troubles, just keep your head down.
Rescheduled for this Monday 2/22. Any recommendations for studying until then? I followed your method in the video (took my last practice test 3 days ago and have been memorizing formulas since). Now I have 3 more days.
@@getfunkod Hmmm. If it were me i would do 1 more practice test then memorize formulas more. but if you are truly 100% on formulas, then possibly focus ethics right now. that book can make the difference.
@@straighttalks-ajsrmek323 thanks! I repeated an old practice test Friday and did some more questions yesterday. It’s crazy how some of the formulas slip out of your memory after a couple extra days so I plan on going through them some more today.
Thank you for the tips. I've been putting the formula memorization off for a while just because I've internalized a lot of them. I found it interesting that you said it worked well for you having a formula/cheat sheet while writing mocks. I haven't done a single mock with a cheat sheet simply because I've been trying to see what my performance would be like. I'm about to start Mock C & I'll attempt it this time with my formula sheet & see how that goes. My L1 exam is in 72 hours.. and in that time I plan on crushing 3 more mocks, memorizing the formulas, & the day of the exam just lightly skimming through Ethics. Cheers!

Hey guys! Who else feels that the CFA institute should have made available 4h30 Mock exams? I took the February 2021 L1 exam and feel that if I fail, one of the reasons would be that I didn't allocate my time efficiently because of lack of practice on the 4h30 exams!

The research data seems to suggest that more than 3 mocks doesn't benefit candidates. Dr. Mark Meldrum has a great video explaining the details he released recently.

@@straighttalks-ajsrmek323 his analysis is a statistical one so it obviously doesn't mean it suits everyone. It's just what the data seems to suggest from what I remember.

I am new to the whole CFA field and was wondering can you take the level 1 exam any month during the year, or do they run in specific months?
Only 4 times per year.

I recently learned that Kaplan's CFA books are almost 1/3 of the CFA's official books in terms of length. Do you think I should change materials midway to the exam to save up some time? (I have been using the CFA books for FRA, Quant, CF, Equity). Thanks.
personally i feel you can get away with Kaplan's books even without prior accounting/finance knowledge. Reinforce Kaplan's books with youtube videos and youll be good.
CFA's official books are wayyyyy too thick

Hey ! I’m going to attempt level 1 in August and I’m starting with the CFA institute books. Will it be better if I switch to the Kaplan books as they’re much thinner and I’ll be able to finish the curriculum in a shorter time ?

Where did you manage to find 10+ Mock exams? I managed to find 2-3, where did you find 10+ exams?

Should we completely rely on CFA Material Videos available on TH-cam? or should we read books as well.

Look for some of the old ones in google drive folders that people have linked in old forum posts.

Where is a good place to either buy or download mock exams written by cfai. ? Theres alot of providers out there but dont want to waste time on a bad source

No, they aren't done. Let me know if you are interested and I can finish them. I haven't really promoted Patreon much so I haven't prioritized it.

Wiley sells them, like a 2 'pack' is like $50 or something like that
