    So happy I found you .... first time attempting to grow anything .. other than my kids .... they survived ... so at age 79 I'm giving gardening a try. My wonderful son built me a raised gardenbed which is doing ok ... teeny tiny sprouts but hopefully beets and radishes soon. I've been binge watching your videos and so ready to fill up the bins I have and get to composting! Thank you. Now ... I'm searching for your video where you show how you harvest your groups. I'm excited!

    Don’t underestimate how acidic those pine needles make your soil. I don’t have a pine tree but my neighbor does, and let me tell you: all the pots on that side of my patio have been worthless. I’ve decided this year to just have strawberries there since they’re acid lovers, but it’s a shame because those lines made my beets refuse to get out of seed line phase. It’s been...an education on soil, lol.

    LOVE YOUR VIDEOS!!! You are SO INSPIRING TO ME! I bought paint, brushes, masking tape, shouldering iron, and glue gun and ask myself what would Robbie do, lol - I have four humming bird feeders now and three bird feeding stations...I have NO started a garden yet but am inspired by your story three years ago of why you and Gary started...I have autoimmune disease and chronic illness since 35 years old. It has been hard to find joy in my life some days, and the birds are helping bring me out of my rut and sadness. I am hoping to start a small container garden here on our small property in Ojai CA. I bought 4 x 27 gallon totes from Costco
    (black heavy duty recycled #5). I have started saving kitchen scraps. I collected branches that fell around our yard and leaves and toilet papers rolls and shredded lots of old mail and papers...Hoping I can start with some containers on top of my compost pile soon...I need your advice for 1. Good organic seeds? 2. What would be good to start with right now in containers in my compost bins as a first time gardener? 3. Good source for seeds or starters in/for Southern CA? (zone 10A) ~~ THANK YOU SO MUCH AND BLESS

    • @RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy
      @RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You are on your way, and Ojai has lots of birds there, it is beautiful. As far as seeds, most any seeds really will do, fresh seeds and heirloom, I get lots on ebay and all has worked out great and Baker Creek has great seeds too we get lots from them as well. Do not over worry about organic seeds, they are so tiny and what your concern will be is that you do not use pesticides on your growing plants that you are going to eat. I am starting now broccoli, tomatoes, mustard greens, carrots, onions, parsley...but you can also check out a local nursery to see what they have also. I am excited to get my zucchini going, so far just a tiny bit too early, but I am trying some outside already that I sprouted inside. Within the month we should be able to start almost anything outside, as the weather should be starting to warm up ( I HOPE). You and I are in 10A. Take care and THANK YOU

    Here in Washington State the testing has attributed the bird deaths to salmonella. In February we were asked to take down our bird feeders and bird baths, where birds congregate, until the end of March in the west, and eastern Washington until the end of April. I took my bird feeders down as I feed my birds year-round and it's hurting my heart not to watch them. I know they will come back as soon as I put feeders back out, but I do miss them now. I continue to feed the hummers as they mostly do not congregate.

    Sadly I notice the hummingbird population is down in my area last spring and summer, I buy 25 lbs of sugar per season, I only used 5lb last season. And, the chick-a-dees I have a good flock all winter long, hardly any showed up, only one showed up today. all they get is suet and sunflower seed, so - what is going on- no honey bees last year, I have them every year because they like my groundcover thyme, a few showed up late when the sunflowers were in bloom, Butterflies, it's seldom I see one anymore. Some say the birdfeeder are spreading a bacteria

    • @lauraw79
      @lauraw79 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sadly MON SANT O and mass glyphosate spraying is greatly harming bees, humans and planet.

    • @RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy
      @RobbieAndGaryGardeningEasy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think the issue is more than just bird feeders...and with the bees down that shows me it is now their environment that may be creating an issue. If One sprays for weeds and insects, the insect eating birds have less of a food source and it they find contaminated insect food...well you know. All we can do is the best we can do, I will feed the birds here, we now have well over 55 species of birds, got a video of that new visitor bird, that is a pair of Red-breasted nuthatch, that day I did this garden tour. Many birds now stay here all year and look healthy, and we have more bees here now they years ago. Take care!

    I'm having fun volunteering in our community garden growing food for the neighborhood people !!!!
    We received six truck loads full of wood chips ; which we use to cover our raised beds for "weed" control , soil insulation , and mulch for adding organic material to the soil !!!!
    The wood chips are decomposing and turning into soil amendment !!!!
    We are now gearring up for spring planting !!!!!
    We have a bird feeding station that brings in the insect eaters !!!!
    We have eleven fruit trees , and six large raised beds on 3/4 th acre in an urban setting in the central northern California region !!!!

    Greetings...
    Have you tried the Mittliter method of growing food? I hope to compare that method along side the Back to Eden method of gardening. I will be putting buckets and totes into my front year. We live in Houston and we fight the heat and humidity each summer.
    We gave tried papaya for several years.
    I would love a cutting of your tree collards. Could you point me to a source of that plant. I am going to try malbar spinach this years.
    Getting buckets was a problem for a while but now we get several buckets each weeks. We also have problems getting our buckets apart.
    I will also try nectarines.
    I love basil and grew basil in The Philippine Islands. We also grew avacados that had long necks on the avacado fruit.
    We grow the long asian egg plants.
    You have some great ideas and l love your channel.
    Be blessed,

    I wonder where the birds get their dust baths. Have you ever put out a bowl or bucket of diatomaceous earth? They use things like that to get rid of the tiny critters that get in their feathers and even parasites - I'm going to try a mixture of diatomaceous earth and bentonite clay as I have quite a bit of both - on the other end of the porch, away from the wet bath. Don't have any fountains yet but I think I'm going to put out some wet clay, with a little bit of DE mixed in for eating, if they need it, and then the DE with a little bit of clay for rolling around in, which they do regularly. I don't think they'll eat the clay unless they need it so that should be interesting. But the dry DE/clay bath - that's just SOP for birds.
    I was wondering about your buds because of the wood chips. Do they have a dust patch to roll in on the property? I think bees ALSO do dust baths or, at least, I have a vague recollection of seeing a piece of video...so I'll probably put out more than one. One on the porch and one out back, away from the front door...just in case the mud daubers or paper wasps would want to use it. And I have cicada wasps in a patch of dirt by the porch so, maybe they'd like it too...I'll make a little pile near the holes and see - I don't know.
    Actually, I think I'll put out a ground dust pool for rabbits and squirrels, too. They can be a nuisance but I'd still prefer they were healthy so...

    Could be the papaya is making blankets for the papaya fruit with the sap? nature is amazing! I am amaze with your observations, and I listen to your video while working around the house and now in the process to set up a veggie garden with your compost in place method and layering plants in my apartment balcony! Thank you for the insight, love all your ideas! You’ve got a fan here in Malaysia!!

      Hi to You in Malaysia! That was the first time we have seen that Sap(?) All looks great, and you may be right, it created a "blanket" to protect the unripe fruit. You will love gardening this EASY way, thank you!!!! Take care!

    Try hosing with water along the edges of each bucket, may loosen the dirt. Also put a rock or stick in the buckets before stacking them next time.

    Hello! I have a question, when do the hooded orioles usually arrive where you live?

  • @loycemarch8409

    Hi. Hope you find this message. I read this elsewhere. What do you think?
    Debbie Beauvair from Deerfield, N.H., asks: "I have a question about hummingbirds. We’ve noticed in the last 3 weeks or so that the number of hummingbirds have increased and the fights are off the charts. Our feeders are socially distanced by humminbird standards - at least 20 feet apart - but they’re swooping and chasing all over the place. What’s going on?"
    MY QUESTION. What is the with the 20 feet.

      Hummers are territorial put them - feeding stations- out of sight of each other😊

    Bees sting, they do not bite. You are so lucky to have so much land and space to grow all these lovely things in!

    You most likely already know this, but I thought I would share just in case - I just learned that a flock of hummingbirds can be called a bouquet, a glittering, a hover, a shimmer, or a tune. How sweet is that?!

    Are these totes UV safe? Resistant? And how do you keep the snails out?

    • @arthuurwong49
      @arthuurwong49 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes totes safe - raise totes up on chairs & throw tulle over it, fasten w metal clips so bugs don’t crawl in😊

    Loved the video and tips! Can't wait to try your way of container gardening! You have re-energerized me to get pumped for this year's growing season with what I already have! Not spending money on pots just some good top soil and compost and will fill up the rest with nature from around the yard. Thanks so much for your content. Just found you and new fan! Bless you and Gary gardens!

    My tomatoes have done better all winter than they did over spring/summer too! It's been lovely eating them all thru the "colder" months. I'm in southern Cali too,...Riverside, so a bit warmer than you I imagine.

    Robbie what do you think about growing in plastic kiddie pools? I have been thinking about growing my greens in these

    • @lauraw79
      @lauraw79 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know she says best to be in food grade plastic, to only use safe plastic (look at numbers on pool) numbers 1,2 and 4,5 I believe she said, I personally wouldn't want nasty chemicals like BPA to leech into my food and soil...Maybe use LARGE bins if the pools you find are not a safe plastic - Don't use #3, 6 or 7. I assume pool would be used directly on the ground, whereas the bins can be put on chairs and are more of an easy raised bed, Bless

      @Nikki-mx5my 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, definitely look at the type of plastic the kiddie pool is made of. There are certain types of plastics you really want to avoid. There’s another TH-camr I enjoy that made a raised bed out of a kiddie pool that she found on the roadside. It was the hard plastic kind NOT the inflatable plastic ones. She said not to use the inflatable ones as they are made of really bad plastic that she wouldn’t want her kids and pets to swim in, much less grow in. Make sure to drill holes in the bottom for drainage.

      Look at Gary’s garden - he grows veggies in kiddie pools all the time!😊
