  • We visited Nátthagi, where the lava is now filling slowly. It’s obvious that the lava will go over the highway in the end, the only question is, how long will it take to reach the road. Also, there was an earthquake in Brennisteinsfjöll (The Sulphur Mountains) but it’s probably just a shift of tension in the area.

Amazing to see! Roman from Gut'n Tog hiked that valley last week before it broke through. I recognized that big rock immediately. The interesting thing about this volcano and it's fissures are they are directly above the tectonic plates where the Eurasian and North American plates come together. It's exactly on the lines. Awesome!

I was a little concerned when Valur was describing the new type of lava being like slivers of glass & wonder if the strong wind could blow the glass & people could breathe it in or get it in their eyes. That could be deadly. I’m sure the experts wouldn’t let people go there if it was too dangerous though.

I hope that your town remains safe. Thank you for your on the scene reports. It's almost like being there. Since I'm from Oregon, USA, and familiar with volcanic landforms this helps me imagine being in Iceland. I watched the Mt. St. Helens eruption and prior to it had climbed the mountain many times. Stay safe.

There is a bell tower not 300 meters from my home, and depending on the direction of the wind, it can sound like it’s right at my window, or not ringing at all. Watching the start of your talking reminded me of listening to the noon chimes and missing the middle clangs because the wind blew the sound in a different direction.

Such sturdy fellows, Valur and Art, battling that strong wind to keep us current! I love the spectacular volcano footage, especially that you captured the "clinking" of the lava. Discovered that was one of my all-time favorite sounds with the 2018 Kilauea eruption (thanx Scott, Apau Hawaii & Charles, Doing Hawaii).
I've got to find my way to Iceland!!!

the Icelanders were already successful on Heimeay Island when they
cooled a lava flow with water and so its viscosity so
increased so that it no longer flowed much further.
They pump up vast amounts of the surrounding seawater.
Maybe fire-fighting planes or a cascade of fire hoses will help

    Welcome back Valur!
In Hawaii, those glass threads are known as Pele's Hair after Madam Pele, the volcano goddess who is said to live in the crater of Halemaumau on Kilauea (see it's not just Iceland that gives difficult names to its volcanoes). It's usually formed from fire fountains, or where lava is moving fast. Please don't touch it - it is glass, it is REALLY sharp, it can irritate your skin and cause serious injuries if it gets into your eyes or lungs.
The light in today's Newscast is amazing - Art has done a beautiful job of catching the unearthly colours of the ground, the glow of the lava peeking out of the blackness - and that incredible Nordic sky (I'd almost forgotten what a blue sky looks like - clearly you're having our summer!)

So much video is available regarding this natural phenomenon, but the professional sound quality of this channel is unmatched. Notice how the remote individual microphone continues to work fine as our intrepid reporter turns his back on the camera while hiking away. Notice the incredible build-up of that jet engine sound as an effusive event occurs in the volcano's crater during a long sequence at the end of his narrated report. This is my favorite media outlet in the world right now.

    Around 16:30
It appears that it does move like water does - when it gets squeezed into a tighter area, the lava moves faster. When the area broadens out, it moves slower.
