More likely Malaysia will have a chance of receiving Chinese planes than Russian ones. The Chinese doesn’t have production delay issues at the very least. The Russians couldn’t put enough into their own Air Force. Then again, highly doubt Malaysia will buy with the danger of component and replacement supply chain issues.

based on what has been happening in the Ukraine war, I think Su 34 is a very important part of the Russian military effort in Ukraine. Su 34 is the workhorse of the Russian air force in this war, alongside with the Su 25 and Kamov Ka52.
If i were to design the air defense structure for a country. Alongside with the S - 300/400/500 defense system, the Su 34 would be the workhorse and either Su 35 or Su 57 (or both) is the backbone of the air force.
If you were to insist on buying Russian I would agree with you. Personally, I would explore other options.
I doubt Russia would sell even a downgraded version (so called "Export version") of the Su-57, the US would be all over it instantly.

You are right... Malaysia as before usually choose a path that's not well trodden.
We chose the Airbus A400 Atlas strategic lifter, not the Hercules c130J because A400 was a new tech transporter. We used the PT91M MBT but upgraded it giving it better ride, better engines and battle management system.
We declined the Paladin tracked howitzer deeming it too expensive to bring it to current US standards.
So being the awkward child isn't all strange to the M'sian armed forces

Sure they are good fighter jets , but unless russia counters and find a payment network which is alternarive to swift ..its difficult for them to produce su57 unless they choose to start a production unit in india ..since su30 and mig 29 built in india previously as well...that would provide asean countries to procure more su57 at low cost and fast and even maintainance and repairs would be made easy
