Octopus kites big and small, old and new

  • My 1,778th kite video. The day started with a very light breeze, but later I was able to fly a good selection of kites. Our weather is not generally so kind these days - as I write this, the sun is shining but the wind is gusting to 106 km/h (over 60 mph), so I shall not be flying kites today!
    Anyone wanting to check out all my "How to..." videos on various aspects of kite-flying can now find them all easily on my Playlist at / jimskitesnz .

    Fabulous day at the beach - those kites really look vibrant against that clear blue sky. I love any of those tentacled kites. Their movement just makes the display that much more captivating.

      Yes, tentacles look good, and lots of tentacles look even better.

    The white octopus is quite beautiful. But nothing beats a gang of octopuses!😊

    Isn't it great when weather cooperates!? Glad you had a good fly with so many great kites. Octopus kites still are keen flyers , no matter the generation. But I have to say ..I like the buggy eyes on that black one. :)

      Octopus kites are among my favourites, Priscilla, especially the big ones, but they are a lot of trouble to pack up after flying, which is why I don't use them more often.

    Fantastic display, Jim. Great to see all of the Octopi occupying the sky. What a sight for the motorists passing by! As alway, thanks for sharing.

      I often worry that we might cause accidents by distracting the drivers, but I think we've been OK so far!

    I used to fly at rest stops where I could park my truck for the night and eventually stopped because it would cause slowdowns on the interstate and I didn't want to cause an accident just because people wanted to see what was flying so I understand that concern Jim! Lol It would usually be a 24ft octo, a fish and a mini stinga, sometimes my 13ft flowtail delta to mix it up. Love the videos Jim!

      Certainly those kites right next to the road would cause a distraction! Our beach is narrow, so we have to be careful not to fly across the road that runs just the other side of the dunes.

    I have a few Octopuses I could have added including a black one that is missing its original beach location. Once again too far away. Hope to see you soon.

      I can't remember if you've ever flown that black one, Carl. It may be among your numerous unflown kites. Let's hope next weekend goes according to plan.

      My 13m Octopus, which is a great kite, came from here: www.aliexpress.com/item/4000767878237.html . I can't really offer an opinion about any others.

      What is the wind speed range for the kite?

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The 13m one. But I also have an 18m one which I don't often fly. I fly the kite on 300lb braided dacron line, on a simple hoop spool. I've never tested the full wind range, but I'd say probably 6 mph (10 km/h) to 18 mph (28 km/h) or maybe higher.
