    Now that I have shot around a dozen rolls of black and white fim with the Fuji GSW690 iii I wanted to give you some of my initial impressions and reasons you might want to shoot this camera yourself.
    I also go over what I see as the biggest pros and cons of the Fuji GSW690 iii and even a few of the mixed emotions I have with this film camera.

    The hood is the exact reason I sold my version III and opted for the version I as it has no slide hood which means you can use a Lee system or a step up and use any filters you want! Also it has a normal aperture and shutter ring which is easier to use than the concealed rings in II and III. And the last is the build casing the version I and II are made of a better harder case than the thin plasticy casing on version III.

      Tend to agree, though the hood is not a deal breaker for me. I have not used the earlier and my 77mm step up ring works fine. Not a huge fan of the body material on this one, but the lens is oh so nice!

    Hey Matthew. Fantastic videos. I have the gw690ii and love it. Unfortunately it doesn't as much use, because I tend to carry my LF gear as well when I go out.... and yes I also carry every single lens and piece of gear... because you never know what you need😅. But, I am finding all the gear has been totally counterproductive to my creativity. Hope to remedy that by taking just the Fuji more often and leaving the LF gear at home. Keep up the great videos!

    I bought the 90mm lens version. Mainly for Enviromental Portrait projects. It was really mint. Mint normally means nearly perfect, no marks and in perfect working order. I would have asked for a bit of discount. the counter on the bottom of my camera had 11 on it. That's 11 rolls put through it (or 110 shots/exposures). The lenses are some of the best lenses I have ever used.

    I have used fixed lens systems in the past, but I'm pretty good at limiting my lens choices. For every format I shoot (35mm, 645, 6x6, 6x7, 5x7 or 8x10) I only have 2 lenses - a moderate wide (28mm equivalent) and the "normal" lens for the format. That's always worked for me. Anything wider or longer I never used anyway, so two lenses has always been enough

    • @DistinctionPhotoLLC

      That’s cool, I seem to like the compression from longer lenses at times but that comes with a lot of weight…

    I own the exact same camera. Love the idea of one lens. Hate the hood, always moving around and seems cheap. The pix are great, really sharp. I have the same issue as to what to bring and carry. THANK YOU for NOT calling it the Texas Leica! (Find that so annoying from other reviewers). This camera and it's variants stand on their own and offer phenomenal image quality. I've been on the fence about getting one and debating the W or the SW version. Prices are creeping up on "mint" condition ones. I do have it's big brother, the GX617 that has been satisfy my cravings in the meantime with the 90mm and 180mm lenses. If you worry about getting only 8 shots on the 6x9, you'll be fretting even more with only 4 shots per roll! But the huge panoramic negative makes it all worth while.
    Thanks again for the honest review. I'm sure it'll bring you even more joy once you give it a good CLA.

    One lens has always been my approach. For me, it's one less thing to think about as framing and composition require complete engagement. I've always wanted one of those but continue to just carry on with my Agfa Billy Record folders and using hyper focal focusing techniques. The folders are wonderfully deliberate but it would be nice to have a little more modern experience. The other reason I have not pulled the trigger on a 690 is I am left eye dominant. Funny thing though, the Agfa's are just windows. Really enjoyed your video, just stumbled across it drinking coffee on a Saturday morning.

    Very complete video for this series of cameras. Over many decades, I regularly considered buying one or both (90mm and 65mm, but never did because at the decision point, the fixed lens was a deal killer for me. Couple of comments. There are three versions over make 25+ years. AFAK the only differences between the three series is body covering style and maybe lens coating improvements. In each model series, there were three formats, 6x9, 6x8, and 6x7, so there are a complete set of format options. If I had, my selection would have been 6x8mm (680). Reasons: I shot 35mm exclusively for several decades, and I always ended up cropping off the long end of the image, so with this larger format choice available, why buy a 6x9 camera and crop those negatives? I'd rather crop in camera and get another frame or two per roll as well. On his complaints, any camera this old probably needs and should just get a CLA. That will deal with the light seals (which is also a DIY) and the floppy lens hood which bothered him. New, they have a felt ring inside the hood where it slides against the lens barrel. With use, that felt wears down, and the hood gets floppy. (Here, you can also hear it grinding as he slides it - totally shot there.) You have to unscrew the front lens group to removed and "refelt" the hood (DIY for the experienced.) Ebay? Well, it's not a mint camera by any definition. More important than the items he mentioned is the shutter. There is a shutter actuation counter in the camera bottom. Fuji recommended that the shutter be "serviced", whatever that means, after 5000 cyles (500 on the counter) and replace after 10,000 cycles. My concern is that the cameras has a lot more shutter usage than "mint" would suggest. All Fuji MF (pro) cameras have this shutter counter in some form. When you shop, always get the shutter count in writing from the seller before you commit. If the seller dodges, walk away unless the price covers the shutter CLA. Servicing these shutters is probably nothing special, but replacing one? Not going to happen. Lens quality? It's far better than any need or use you will ever have. Test it against a Hasselblad or Rollei. Be prepared to grind your teeth if you invested in the upscale "name" lens.

    • @DistinctionPhotoLLC
      @DistinctionPhotoLLC  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Randal, Appreciate all the input. I did not know about the felt on the hood. That makes sense as it seems a bit off. I will say the lens is in perfect shape (other than the hood. I always intended to send it in for a CLA at some point, was just hoping I could shoot it for a bit before replacing seals, etc… but I will have it gone through and serviced as I do all my old cameras.
      The shutter count on the bottom is 053 but I have read that these can be fiddled with so never put to much merit in that but believe it could be correct if the hood felt fell apart like seals did with age. Definately love the camera and the lens is at first look sharper or as sharp than all of my Hasselblad glass at least around f-11

    I just picked one up for a good price. I wanted one back in college. My RZ67 is great but involves a backpack to bring with me. I also am guilty of bringing lenses. So going to have this as smaller option for MF, the 6x9 is a bonus for landscapes (probably what I’ll use it most for)

    Regarding your question on lenses. I love bringing as many lenses as I can when I travel. I just limit myself to a specific lens or two when it calls for it during the trip itself and leave the rest in the hotel/car. I have a bit of fomo but sometimes having that flexibility to choose whatever lens I want let’s me slow down and really think about the composition I want. However if I’m just going about the town I prefer to just bring 1 lens because it lets me think in one focal length which I feel like helps my compositions better

    Kidding aside, I have accumulated more lenses (and gear) that anyone would need in the 30yrs doing this activity.
    Hands down, the work I choose to print most come from limitations. One body, one lens, one (type of) film.
    Enjoy the GSW. I surely enjoy mine, along with the GW.
    BTW, I wouldn’t worry too much about the ‘plastic’ body. It’s quite known to be very durable; I’ve owned mine for two decades. These also have durable copal shutters.

      Thank you! Great to know the limitations can help the creative process. Seems to many choices and distractions can have the opposite effect.

    I got the GW690 back in 2014 as my Medium format camera, and there I stayed. In between I had picked a Rolleicord (a bit out of whack either it or me focusing it) and a Holga. I decided for 6x9 as it almost is Large format on a much more manageable form factor compared to LF. And for what it is, it's not as heavy as the SLR's (hey Pentax 67). For some reason, back then I could get a mkIII for what an old battered Pentax 6x7 went. I just bought a light seal kit to replace the ones in mine but TBH as a photo friend said, these are minimum 20 year old as modern as they can be.
    It's quirky, but the 35mm form factor makes it seem comically so. Even then Mamiya 6/7 were a whole different tier apart, though as a HS kid in 2012 I could almost had bought a M7II for $400, forget about that nowadays completely. For the difference shoot more: Buy film, chemicals and transporation instead!
    Apart of gear, I have accomodated to it. As it's a large format, one has a lot of liberty cropping. Printed up to 20x24" with success, although it's not incredible crazy sharp (RDP or TMX seem to outresolve the 90mm lens) just well performing. For film economy I sometimes think about a 6x6 or 645 but end up again with the thought of better buying film with that money.

    some weeks ago I bought me the GW690II and after first rolls in the darkroom I was so convinced of this camera and ordered the GSW 690II, I'm jut selling all my RB 67 pro SD stuff and I think all of what I see can be done with this camera system. Your first video and this also makes me thinking I'm on the right way.
    What I need to improve is working on a monopod to get up to 1/8 sec. 1/30 with the monopod is ok, 1/15 is also possible.
    1/8 would be great for making photographs of water and streams.
    Maybe you can also check this with your setup, it's just because I don't always want to carry the tripod.

    • @DistinctionPhotoLLC
      @DistinctionPhotoLLC  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The cameras can definitely make too notch negs… very impressive.
      I have not had a monopod for awhile but it would be interesting with this camera.
      I have been loving the Peak tripod for my Hasselblad and now this camera. It is an expensive tripod (they do have cheaper aluminum version) but very well thought out, light weight (maybe even as light and compact as many monopods) and convenient. My only gripe is I do not have spikes as an option for snow/ice)
      I personally feel it is worth the money they ask. I also might be able to try using it in a monopod style as I do not currently own one ( a monopod).
      I would think with the gsw especially not having a mirror and all that you could prob get a 15th and with proper technique even 1/8 or less. The gw maybe a stop less than the gsw but would need to test to know for sure.
      So far I have really enjoyed this one. Just started in the darkroom and the negative size is proving to be much fun 🤩

    • @martin-f5482
      @martin-f5482 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@DistinctionPhotoLLC first things first, my Fujis are version III, I also wanted a mint and clean camera for future projects. The GSW will arrive today 🙂
      My Novoflex Tripod is good for them, I also use it with my 4x5" camera but sometimes I want to go lightweight and less "brutal" . The GW can be used down to 1/30 without tripod or monopod. Using a monopod improves that and lifts it on a serious level, prints up to 50x60cm can be made in a high quality. So both are perfect for outdoor use, landscapes and so on. The GW an also be used for some studio shoots but of course not good as a single lens camera.
      Back to monopods, I think what helps a lot is a cable release on it.

    Fuji GSW690 medium format camera is so much smaller and lighter in weight than my 4x5 inch view camera.
    8-shots per roll is so much nicer than changing film after each shot of 4x5 inch sheet film.
    6x9cm image quality is so much better than anything from my 35mm film cameras.
    Image has same aspect ratio as my 24x36mm film camera image.
    65mm lens has same horizontal angle-of-view as a 28mm lens on my 35mm film cameras.
    The 65mm lens is my favorite for landscapes and group portraits. For general subjects, full-length portraits, and 3/4 length portraits, I also purchased a Fuji GW670 with a 90mm normal lens.
    I am able to use my Nikon rubber eyecups, my Nikon DG-2 2X Eyepiece Magnifier, and my Nikon DR-3 Right-Angle Eyepiece Viewer on my two Fuji medium format rangefinder cameras.

    I think as consumers we have to hold stores more accountable. If they overpaid for their stock it doesn’t necessarily mean we need to pay their inflated price. If someone is charging a high price for an old camera that isn’t rare then I expect it to be either CLA’d or in immaculate condition. I’m sorry you had that bad experience with your purchase. I just bought a version 1 of the gw690 recently and haven’t used it much yet because it’s fairly intimidating to use imo due to how few shots I can get. I managed to wrap my head around the 10 shots of my Pentax 67 so I’m sure I can wrap my head around 8 shots eventually

    Shanghai GPT3 is available, fresh, in 220 format. The thinking that 8 frames per 120 roll is a negative (pardon the pun) for this camera doesn't really hold water if you consider sheet film only has two sheets per holder. I like to think that when I shoot my GW690III, it's like a mini 5x7 without movements but with a similar aspect ratio, and then I can see the 8 frames per roll as an advantage. It's a great camera compromise for those times when you want to jump out of the car, make a photo that you see then jump back in the car without a lot of questions that usually arise when a tripod and dark cloth enter the scenario. I'm on the fence about just taking a dremel to the lens hood on mine and replacing it with an actual 67mm mental hood. I'm not a fan of the wobbliness of that built-in hood. I'm not sure what they were thinking about that half-assed "T" mode when they designed the camera.

    • @DistinctionPhotoLLC
      @DistinctionPhotoLLC  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The T mode is in my opinion the only real flaw with the camera... So dumb. The hood aparently has a felt piece that gets worn out and causes it to be wobbly like mine. Would like to replace the piece before cutting the thing off :)
      Some days hopping out with a large format camera and everything that goes with it is just to much... But is ALWAYS worth the effort!

      All are great option. I have had the RZ and loved it but it Was BIG and Heavy. prob its only drawbacks. I have grown fond of rangefinders and find it really great for acurate and fast focus. The downside to rangefider is you can not focus as close.
      Really depends on what you intend to shoot and your style. but all are really good.

    Thank you. Turns out I can't readily get a 6x17 scanned so time for the next best option - 6x9! These sound fantastic (I use my digital camera with me as my meter - Alex Burke style). Great warning on the BS "mint" crap I keep seeing on eBay. Mint means just about how it came out the box when it was brand new. NOT with failing "wear items" or whatever the seller claimed. Nope, that's not mint. That's used.

      Yeah so much stuff is in “mint” condition on EBay… I would guess maybe half if that of what is claimed… make sure you can send back if necessary 👍. I was/ am interested in 6x17 as well and I have not because I can not print negs quite that large. It is also a weird format (for me) to shoot. Hard to compose so wide. Great for certain things but difficult for many. I do shoot 6x12 which is a. It more natural feeling when framing but 6x9 is just very familiar from shooting 35 mm digital, etc…
      Also am really surprised how much roomier the negs feel when working with them. They feel more like 4x5 than 6x6 for what that is worth. Thank you!

    To most people, "Mint" condition would mean there was no difference from new when it came to using the camera. Certainly having to renew the seals meant it was no better than "excellent", if even that. Though loving cameras for their own sake, I have outfits with a number of lenses, I often just pick a couple to take out, and then I rarely change the lens, unless there is really little choice.
    Depending on the subjects I intend to shoot, I think the need to have different lenses is more in the mind than in reality.

    I've owned the GW and GSW several times, but have sold them to concentrate on my Hasselblad. I love the negative size, but don't like some of the issues.
    .
    First, carrying the GW AND the GSW is 7lbs weight, the Hasselblad is 3lb, or 4lbs with an extra lens.
    F/5.6 is too slow for darker spaces, or sunrise/sunset, so a tripod is essential, another 4lbs. The GW is better, but no match for the f/2.0, and f/2.8 of the Hasselblad lenses.
    .
    The lens hood is horrible and make using a Lee filter system impossible, which is essential for landscape work with such a big neg. Take a Dremel and cut it off and stop using it as a snapshot camera.
    .
    I worry about the frame count and the need to replace the shutter after 500 rolls.
    .
    I only buy mint minus and your camera would have to be cheap to prevent me sending it back. I couldn't live with a misty viewfinder, so that would need fixing in my world.
    .
    8 frames is OK for me as 8 masterpieces are better than 36 also-rans and the potential from every frame is terrific.
    .
    You've solved the meter problem perfectly as the Voigtländer VC is the best solution, imo.
    .
    Great balanced view you have. Keep them coming.

      Thanks! I guess after hearing that repeated the viewfinder just seems dark… not necessarily hazy (though I do not have another to compare it against) it just seems a bit dark. Did get a good price so like I said in the vid still happy with the deal, just thought the deteriorated light seals was a bit obvious that it was not “mint”…
      This camera to me is just a different beast than my Hasselblad. Would not give up the Hasselblad for this as that camera can do so much more like you said. Appreciate the feedback and thanks for watching!

    Every time I give my Bronica to someone they act like it's a lead weight. You really are blind to your own gear's weight eventually.
    Mint to me means the user does not need to do anything to make the device usable. You can't use a camera with disintegrated light seals. He should've sold it as excellent and said it needed new seals. Reminds me of the Japanese eBay sellers that mark fungus lenses as "Mint -"

    First, my opinion on the counter - ignore it. The counter goes to 999, then rolls back to 000. You have absolutely NO idea how many times that counter has rolled over, if any. Foremost, the counter, IMO, is a psychological barrier anyway. Fuji is the ONLY film camera (to my knowledge) that has a counter. When you buy any other film camera, I doubt you are too concerned about shutter actuations. It won't matter if you are anyway, since there is no way of actually knowing a shutter count. So, my advice with the Fuji is to simply ignore it, as you would if you bought any other film camera. You have the option of shooting the camera as-is, or paying for a CLA at any time, assuming you can find a reputable repair person.
    Secondly, I do not consider yours a "mint" camera. If you're happy with it, so be it, but a camera with bad sealing and haze in the finder should not be considered mint, under any stretch of imagination.
    Considering a single camera/lens over a kit - I've owned & used Hasselblads for over 50 years now. Currently using the X2D 100 megapixel digital (3:4 format) with 7 prime lenses. When I go out for a day of shooting, I'm pretty much prepared for anything and everything I find. But with a backpack that weighs almost 50 lbs. A lot of my day is spent changing lenses back & forth. It's the nature of the beast.
    Now on the flip side, carrying one 6x9 body with a 65mm lens and a particular film stock, you are forced to seek out those things that will benefit most from the 65mm lens in 2:3 aspect ratio. And due to the 8 shots per roll plus the cost of the roll, you become much more selective before pressing the shutter button.
    But when you find that one subject or scene that works ideally, having 6x9 centimeters of film real estate is nothing short of striking gold! When shooting 6x9 film, I always think of high-end scans producing BIG prints of epic scenes.

    • @DistinctionPhotoLLC
      @DistinctionPhotoLLC  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Agree... not the best indicator as it can be manipulated. I just assume most cameras at this age would benefit from a CLA and usually end up doing it at some point regardless.
