Beloved Sri Nannagaru is a most excellent example of an enlightened being who never met his master in physical form. Arriving at Ramanashram in 1959, the Maharshi had already dropped his body some nine years before. This did not deter Nannagaru from surrendering his entire existence to the devoted service of his beloved Master, which culminated in his own absorption into the Self. Nanna is Telugu for ‘father’ and Garu is a title meaning ‘venerable’. Born in Andhra Pradesh on 23 September 1934, Sri Nannagaru came from a religious family and was blessed to frequent holy places from an early age. In 1957, he dreamt of an older man with a staff in his hand. The saint lifted Nannagaru from his bed and kissed him three times on the cheeks. For the following six months, he longed to know who the stranger was. One day while reading the book, The Great Man of India, he saw a photo of the saint from his dream. It was none other than Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi. One morning when in Ramanasramam, just as he was waking, Nannagaru witnessed his mind ‘falling once and for all into his heart’. Henceforth he was a transformed being, now moving through the grace of something much greater than the personal mind. Many thousands were drawn to listen to his teachings and he travelled extensively, often returning to his own ashram in Tiruvannamalai. At 12 noon on Friday, 29 December 2017, Sri Nannagaru was absorbed at the feet of Holy Arunachala. Moojibaba had the great honour to meet Sri Nannagaru in February 2011, after one of the occasions when Mooji had been holding a silent retreat at the Sri Nannagaru Ashram in Tiruvannamalai.
