Sunmi is even better than I think you may know. She wrote *every song* on this album. She didn't compose the music, but she wrote all the lyrics. And in the Heroine video, she improvised everything outside of the main choreo. (Though that fall when she's running toward the billboard in the rain was just a straight-up mistake that worked so well they kept it in.) She has become more than just an idol--she's become a legit artist and, in my opinion, one of the most interesting artists in music today.
Don´t forget she also worked with Wonder Girls on Reboot, one of the best Kpop albums out there. All Wonder Girls are so talented, but Sunmi, Yubin and Yeun are artits!
Sunmi is a VERY GOOD dancer, take this from someone who did 10 years of dance training. That's just her style. She has long arms and legs and makes her movements a lot more dramatic. That being said, I think she has struggled with progressing any further with her dance skill for the last couple of years. Wonder Girls were always more sound focused than dance focused. They did a lot of simple low energy dance moves, nothing that required her to be all that athletic. Which probably makes people think she isn't as good, but her dance technique is on point. Which I think is more important than being super athletic. Being athletic helps, but it only helps so much.
Cambunneh yeah i was gonna say this too. as someone who is a choreographer, i think she is very talented but deifntly has her own personality and style. I have a very long skinny arms and very long torso but very muscular and shorter legs and that all helped model my own distinct style along with me being a very very androgynous looking guy facially and body wise effects my style. Everyones body is going to really effect their style and whst they can excel at and i think the route she takes with here choreography is very wise and appears very visually satisfying as well as being distinctive to her so it's really not a lack of skill

She’s giving us something different and I enjoy it. I do feel this song like her dancing will probably be polarizing... I feel people will either like it or hate it. I think her dancing is somewhat more like a musical performance style, her moves are dramatic, theatrical and somewhat impactful even if the dance doesn't come with power. I'm not really sure what word to describe her style but she definitely unique from the others.
Nah, actually even during WG's dancing period she was one of the weakest dancers, plus she has said before that she went bare foot for 24H and Full Moon because its easier than dancing in heels and that dancing is not something she's particularly confident in. Plus her choreos have always been more theatrical, so i dont know where you draw the conclusion that she's a well round dancer when you dont have bases for such statement. I love Sunmi's style of dancing btw

Sirens were actually evil creatures from greek mythology that lured sailors to their death. I love how they incorporated this kind of theme and how Sunmi's songs have double meanings. You should check out her album it's honestly one of my favourites this year.
Disclaimer: Soooo I'm a dancer myself and studied performance arts as well. I would agree that she's not such a good dancer in an sport and competing understanding of dance, but she has indeed this magnificient style to adapt those choreographys that are structured to furfill the KPop genre and make it her own. I recently read an interview about her relationship to dance and its because of her skinny body (people always tend to speak negatively up about it in social media) that she feels uncounscious about sexy dance moves and said she tries to find "moves that fit" her body and "look beautiful" on her. And if you look up the highlight video of the new album you can see in the way she improvises dance moves it's really her attitude and emotions that are controlling her movement, that's why there are always so much facial expressions with it, which i personally love, she would make a good actress i would guess! Sorry for that whole ass opion.
Coming from a dancer myself, she doesn’t really do complex movements (see: SHINEE, EXO, INFINITE, etc) but she is very expressive and very “long and wide” with her movements and her facial expressions are always A*. She’s also got this insane stage presence and charisma that helps her pull all this off :)

I thing that I really love from sunmis videos is the way that she has a lot of natural facial expressions , zoom ins that feature cute and a lot of interesting shots that actually frame her as kind of awkward?? It's very hard to explain but there is so much personality in here videos, songs and choreography that as a singer, i really take inspiration from .
Definitely agree about her outfits: the way she's been styled in every comeback, keeps building up her unique, particular, extravagant, dreamy, nostalgic, slightly royal, ethereal vibe - it's a very diff vibe than other kpop groups/artists, bc its goes beyond trendy outfits that make folks look good. It's almost a costume that levels up her stage aura, where it seems she's not quite 'part of this reality', she's a little magical, like beyond the 4th wall. I totally agree, and love that you love her and this, because I just obsess over her. I honestly really love how ever since Gashina, you could take practically any screenshot from any scene and the aesthetic is almost magazine/Vogueish (imo), because she wears these outfits with these well lit scenes and just owns it. But I LOVE how in "reality" with the video going on, all the little things she does is so twisted in a way. Like she's glamorous and classy, but twisted and comedic as well. I just love it.
True. Her dance style can be also related about her studies, since I've heard that she studies this kind of dance style, contemporary so it's nice she's implementing her new education into it. I like that she has so much more autonomy (or at least it seems) than so many KPop artists (also counting that now she's in a smaller label, so maybe that's one of the reasons why), that's something I really appreciate, she's very unique.

I've loved sunmi for years and when she went solo again I was so happy. All of her singles have been such bops but the latest three (Gashina, Herione and Siren) have felt... different. They touched me deeply; they were all both inspirational and tear-jerking. Siren was such a good song and music video, there is just so so so much in it. Plus hello?? the siren cries melodic bit?? my god genius. i love her doing this double meaning word too, like gashina.

I was thinking this song feels like a remnant of the late-era Wonder Girls, and it's when you pointed out how it sounds like a Chvrches song that I realized the synthpop influence I was grasping at throughout Siren. I dig this song now even more. Great reaction PD!
