It was made towards the end of the Golden age of British comedy, there will never be that amount of talented actors and writers at the same time again. Not one politically correct actor to be seen with some contrived script to fit, no mobile phones just British humor bit to complicated for most cultures. I love it and miss it. Even Ray Winstone in this episode.

Brilliant comedy, quality acting & script etc & you're right, in fact I'd go as far as to say that the fact that we'll never see these types of comedy again is a good measure of just how much this shitty little country has changed.
comedy was one of our nations strongest traits, admired by many from afar etc
but now we've had to change our comedy to suit the needs of liberal lefty skullf**ked halfwits & sycophantic do-gooders!

I remember the Family sitting down to watch this show back in the day, but for some reason, this is the only episode I can remember, and total coincidence it was the one I found online, it always stuck in my mind because of the dead monkey gag.

Marvellous comedy! Why on earth don't the TV people re-run this fabulous series?

Richard Briers character was never as happy in this as The Good Life! It was quite Dramatic & all the characters contributed so well. Was as if Martin felt he should be doing better, wasn't good enough for Ann & almost on the verge of a Nervous Breakdown during many moments/scenes. (That wonderful 'theme tune' suits it perfectly)

I know what you mean...I love the writing in this that can make Martin the foil for all these great understated jokes but also has pathos (like all great comedies do) in that he does seem like he is trapped in his own internal sense of failure and difficulty with life...I always knew Richard Briers was a good actor...but he often does seem to play parts very much like Tom Good...these sort of suburban somewhat maverick 'hail fellow. Well met!' types and I feel I rarely got to see him out of a certain mould...which is why I love this series so much as he plays a real neurotic here...so a change from the usual...and plays it really well!

Whoever thought of using Shostakovitch as the theme music to a cosy British sitcom was thinking outside the box.

I can only remember the theme tune, homework took up so much time I never did see some of these fantastic comedies. I wonder what was the attraction between Paul and Ann, but for some reason, they seemed to work well. But Ann was a bit of alright, an 80's milf!!! Seriously, great acting and the likes of To the Manor Born etc, sadly now history!

Seems like this was the predecessor for One Foot in the Grave. Paul is another version of the Victor Meldrew.

@@brenkenney6624 At a guess I think Mike is referring to a very young Ray Winstone, playing the part of the tractor driver in the above episode. I also disagree with Mike's sarcastic remark about Winstone's acting abilities.
