  • ** There's a bigger write up here on Anthony and the issue of wheelchair access in London - www.thefreehelp... **
Anthony is passionate about the need for improved wheelchair access across London and especially on the tube. He asked for help, so we put our heads together and came up with an idea.
Last week, over 4 million people watched a man #racethetube from Mansion House to Cannon Street station. Here's the original film - • Race The Tube - Sprint .
Props to the guy. He managed to jump out of the carriage at one station and ran to the next before jumping on to the same carriage before the doors closed. Interesting? Yes. Did we learn anything from it? Not so much.
Anthony, myself and a few of my anonymous helping community headed down to the circle line yesterday, cameras in hand, and shot Anthony’s own attempt to #racethetube…. in his wheelchair.

It just adds insult to injury that they have a wheelchair accessible gate to get through to the inaccessible staircase! They have a Starbucks here in Norwich with an accessible toilet but an 8 inch step up into the actual cafe!

Same. In TGI’s in Glasgow there’s a disabled toilet but there’s a huge step just to get to the actual disabled toilet. It’s like a huge pedestal.

As a sister of a wheelchair user this a very interesting video to watch. It is very disappointing that my sister when she visits London next year will not have the joy of getting round easily but will have to plan every to a fine detail as so much is not assessable to her.

I followed a link from Transport For All to this video. Anthony, you ROCK! (and roll!). Hopefully this video will raise more awareness of the problems wheelchair users face on London's transport systems and help to educate people in general (although why, in 2014, we're STILL having this battle is beyond me!). Thanks to all involved!

I have to say, My first visit to London last month (i live up t'north) and I was really quite stunned at the levels of Non-access for mobility impaired/wheelchair users in our so called capital city - what kind of message is it sending out to the MILLIONS of visitors from the rest of the UK and overseas when even the most basic facilities (ramps, elevators etc) aren't provided? I have some mobility issues and I was quite relieved that I was able to get around on my own steam during my stay, It would have completely ruined it had I been poorly as most of the places we visited depended heavily on getting around via the underground and we'd kind of ASSUMED, being the capital City, all the relevant facilities would have been in abundance - in truth, it was very limited, and my own twee little town up north has better facilities than London has.

    • @Cubeforc3
      @Cubeforc3 9 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah you need detective skills to figure out what tube stations are and aren't accessible, sometimes it even depends on what direction you're travelling in. That's not even taking into account the constant works on the tube that could also temporarily block the accessible ways of getting on. Much easier to just stick with busses.

They are pouring millions into the new crossrail project, but won't fix the existing network.
Though statistically, there are very few wheelchair users, there are plenty of people who also struggle with stairs such as elderly people and young children.
It is a shame that a spinoff from a viral video needed to be made, but it definitely helps the cause.

OK, some people need to stop concentrating on nit picking.... and concentrate on the core message that is being put across. It has been put across using this image, as it is in the public eye at this moment. Access for all... It's a very old network, and it will take time........ but why should it take too long when we can do so much else without thinking about it? Love the vid, love the cause :)

I was just sitting here egging him on to beat the train (by telling the screen) & when he stopped at the stairs I said out loud 'ah man that sucks' then read the caption at the end. And totally agree. My last train/tube ride was to watch the invictus games & as we travelled I was reading the underground station map & was annoyed by the amount that didnt have stair free access - shocking in this day & age :)

Good on you! Of course, I don't live in a large enough city to have a subway, but there are still places I can't get to with a wheelchair. How about that wonderful little chinese place downtown with the perfect eggrolls, but the only way to get there is to walk up these very steep stairs that are so narrow you must go single file. Unless they put a bell downstairs and bring the food down, I won't be going up those stairs again anytime soon.

I’m having some health issues with my joints, but we had a family trip planned for New York City. This th-cam.com/users/postUgkxuxJwamLFanm476LC5WPeTouyyU1GXomC was perfect! It’s lightweight enough that my friend could carry it up or down stairs when we needed to. (I can walk very short distances) It was comfortable for me to sit in, I would say if you’re super tall it might be a little cramped. I’m 5’1” and the foot rests were the perfect height. This may not be the best one for long term use, you get what you pay for, but for something that fits our budget that gives me accessibility while we deal with my health this was amazing.

Hi guys. Have been open about our approach to filming in the post on my site about the project (link below the video) and to all journalists who have covered the story over these past few days. Whilst Cannon St has lift access, our focus was to illustrate the 75% of stations that don't - so we took some liberties, have been open about doing so and really had to copy the original route to best deliver that stat above. Hope that's clear (and ok!!).
