I have a very early memory of seeing lots of balloons flying over my street in Swindon, and one of them was a rupert bear shaped one like in this video. Is it possible that the balloons from this video flew over Swindon?
Hi there, it wouldn't have been from the morning ascent in this video as the balloons were heading away from Bristol (and Swindon) towards Long Ashton in North Somerset and it would be very unlikely to see balloons that have taken off in Bristol flying over Swindon due to the distance between the 2 places. I have however found a video from the Wiltshire Balloon Festival in 1992 on here which does feature balloons since as Rupert on it, which may have been what you witnessed.
Fantastic stuff. Thank you so much. Fondest memories of my childhood are attending our balloon festival in Northampton, which came close to matching Bristol’s for a bit. But I dreamed of experiencing Bristol as well, so I love that this kind of footage exists. Takes me back somehow, even though I was never there. One thing that intrigues me is the ascents seem different in style to Northampton. At Northampton, the balloons took off largely one or two at a time. It was rarer to see the bunched liftoffs that seem more common at Bristol, at least from what I’ve seen.
