Thanks, Nicole, for introducing John Clare. Love your reading of his poem so much. Definitely makes me want to read more of this unrelatively unknown poet.
I read Keats' poem of the nightingale again to refresh my memory. Clare and Keats are as different as day and night.
I actually prefer Clare's description of the nightingale. Guess that tells something about me.
You are so knowledgeable but seem so friendly and approachable. I'm sure your subscribers will continue to grow.
Greetings from Grace in New Zealand

Hi Grace, my pleasure and thank you!
Glad you to hear you liked Clare's nightingale :)
I'm still a beginner, especially with poetry. So glad to hear you like the video!

Isn't it incredible that 'madness' and such beauty and clarity as expressed in Clare's poem can coexist in a person's mind?
Perhaps the two facets are interconnected in creativity. It makes me think of Van Gogh.

Yes! There's so much to think and discuss about 'madness' and creativity. Van Gogh is definitely another example.

I love nature writing and it was there where I were introduced to John Clare. Every nature writer quote him, and I love his poetry. Marvelous this video! I really liked this approach to analyze a poem in deep. Thank you! Greetings from Chile!

I love John Clare and really enjoyed your reading and interpretation! I wasn't aware of Jonathan Bate's biography or his edited collection, so thank you for that, too. I have the Oxford edition of his complete poems. His precise description and observations of nature are incredible, and there is a touching melancholy in many of the poems. The end of his life was very sad.
The letter from Charles Lamb was interesting - I'm not sure Clare would have approved of eating frogs!

Yes melancholy, especially the ones about childhood.
No, haha I didn’t think Clare would have liked it either!

Loved this - I'm from Peterborough (pretty near Helpston), but until now all I knew about Clare was that he had a car park named after him.

Thanks Nicole for introducing me to Clare, I had never heard of him before. I really like the Lamb background reference. It gives a nice biographical insight into their relationship...keep up your great videos 😀

He does indeed! We read his essay Superannuated Man in school, which I still remember as being funny and warm compared to the other works we had to study. But I'm also going to read his collection Essays of Ella too. So thanks again..📚

Hey Nicole, I appreciate this particular video! Clare was just a name to me. I always heard he was crazy.
But you cleared that up for me by showing he had an actual affliction that many share.
The poem you read put me in mind of Robert Frost, since he and Clare covered some of the same ground.
