  • We just bought a new bed lifter from Tilmor in Dalton, Ohio.
If you have watched our previous garlic digging videos you'll know that we use a potato fork to dig garlic, until now!
This is our first time using the bed lifter. Since we can start digging the entire field anytime, we wanted to give ourselves a practice run with the digger before we get into full on harvest. (Neither one of us has run anything like this before.)
While bed lifter is made to be used on all kinds of produce crops, we are using it exclusively for digging garlic. There are other widths, this is the largest size and the one that fits our bed system.
Check out the Tilmor website, they are super nice people (sincerely, Jason was treated wonderfully when he went to pick up the bed lifter) and are making some impressive equipment for the produce farmer.

I'm impressed! That looks like a great piece of equipment to have on the farm. It is simple enough to use, has good depth, and was sturdy enough to dig through the dry soil. It's a huge time saver as well. Ordered Tilmor's print catalogue to see what else they have.
Glad it worked for you right away. Hope the rest of the tilling went well, thanks.

It is making our "garlic life" easier! We've been getting tons of rain, (great for July!) but it means we're not done digging yet, one bed yet to finish!

Thank you so much for posting this!
Been on the fence about buying something and recently came across this exact piece of equipment online and wasn’t sure if we should proceed or not.
This was very helpful! Have a blessed and bountiful season this year!

It'd be nice if it had coulters to cut between rows so the garlic released more easily.
And surely you don't have to hand trench each bed as long as the angle of the blade is adjusted properly via the top link. That'd be a major drag across acres.
    Beautiful garlic.

You're right, many times the blade does dig in itself. You only need the trech sometimes and that happened to be what we showed this time. You'll know pretty quickly once you give it a shot, it mainly depends on field conditions.

What hp and weight are your tractor?

Hp is 52 weight of tractor is 5400 and no downward pressure on 3 point. There is actually a recommended hp limit on these, so if you hit a rock or something big you don't break it

From the videos I've watched, this implement works better when the soil is more dry than yours is in your video. It seems that more moist soil has a tendency to draw the blade down deeper into the soil. Also, I've seen that adjusting the top link so that the cutting edge of the blade is angled up slightly helps keep the implement from going too deep.
