I was born in Scarborough but moved down to London when I was about 10, but we always went back for summer holidays to see aunts and uncles and it was always hard leaving my cousins, I used to help my uncle Jim on the speedboat that did rides from the lighthouse.

Amazing memories I am a Scarborian born in Scarborough in 1947 and could remember most of the places especially the old Rowntrees department store where I worked when I left school.

My dad worked there from age 16 in 1928. He went to London for work at age 18 and never lived in Scarborough again. But his parents stayed there (155 Dean Road - kept as a summer boarding house, pre-war). I was born in 1952. We spent all our summer holidays there, staying at Dean road (my grandparents were able to stop taking in "guests" after 1939 - my grandad was a carpenter by trade). My nan stayed at 155 Dean road until the late '60's, when she came to live with us. At that time, the house still had some gas lighting and an old fashioned range. Scarborough has always been a magical place to me (the Mere - the pirate ship - the mock naval battles in Peasholm park, waffles on the north side, fish & chips and that special swirly ice-cream on the south side, looking for crabs on the north side, going up to the Monument, to look out over the whole town - each holiday had its rituals). These photos are lovely. So sad and haunting (in a wistful, pleasant way) to look at a lost dead world. Its something hundreds of pre-photo generations couldn't do.

Thanks. Brought tears mate, this is a reminder of happy childhood memories. To have those days back : Dad alive, mum beautiful, the three of us still kids. And all on holiday in what was a magical place to us.

I have watched this over and over again and enjoyed identifying some of the places! We spend most Sunday’s afternoons enjoying this town, and when I’m eating my fish and chips sat on queens parade looking at the north cliff I can slip back in time and imagine what life was like then! Thanks a million 👏👍

This was when the town had genuine class and prestige. Its lost all its sparkle these days and is known for a completely faceless sea front filled with crappy discount shops. Such a shame because it has the potential to be great again if only the council get their shit together.

    Hi Micheal and Jack's granddad,
Very interesting to see how much has changed.
Would you give me permission to have some A5 photos printed up? I'm not sure how they would come out but I think these are well worth sharing in and around Scarborough.

A photo doesn't tell all the story though... those first photos don't tell us about the dirt and smell, of women with a dozen children, men lost at sea or weather too bad to go out and earn a living. I'm sure I will be criticised for this post; these photos give us a small insight into social history but shouldn't be looked at through rose tinted glasses.
