Religious identity does not clash with being Indian. It's lack of ignorance of people who learn religion from politicians and not directly by practising good deeds of religion in favor of mankind. The premise of the Kumar's response is wrong. A person can have (and does have) multiple identities. There should not be any question of giving up some of his identities, so as to sound cool and tolerant. It's a dishonest position to begin with. Ask yourself: Would a country be worth living in where you are not allowed be yourself? I mean seriously... what exactly makes a country great and worth living in? My thought is that if a country allows you to be yourself (as long as you're NOT an asshole), then it's a great country. The whole idea that everyone has to think, and identify himself/herself, in the same way.. is an inherently intolerant idea, because it assumes that ANY difference is an evil and should be avoided, which is wrong, because differences are BOUND TO EXIST. The premise of the Kumar's response is wrong. A person can have (and does have) multiple identities. There should not be any question of giving up some of his identities, so as to sound cool and tolerant. It's a dishonest position to begin with. Ask yourself: Would a country be worth living in where you are not allowed be yourself? I mean seriously... what exactly makes a country great and worth living in? My thought is that if a country allows you to be yourself (as long as you're NOT an asshole), then it's a great country. The whole idea that everyone has to think, and identify himself/herself, in the same way.. is an inherently intolerant idea, because it assumes that ANY difference is an evil and should be avoided, which is wrong, because differences are BOUND TO EXIST. The same person can have different opinion, even different identities, at different times in his/her life.
Precisely My thought, My idea of Hindu Indian or Indian Hindu doesn't come in conflict ever.

The point is, if you're SANE, then everything can go well.. religion and nation both. If you're INSANE, then nothing can save you, no matter how "great nationalist" you think of yourself.
There are other identities as well, based on our languages, the states we live in, genders, our profession, and countless others.
So my motto is: strive to be sane, a good and rationale human, as opposed to blinding getting trapped by "nation first" or "religion first" ideologies. Nothing is first (or second). The identities exist simultaneously and all the time. If you're Bengali, then you're BENGALI, all the time, just like you're Hindu all the time, and Indian all the time. That is what makes your life interesting, because you can be so many things at the same time. Just that you do not reveal that all the time, that is a different matter altogether.
