It's all about delivery when you have the microphones and reporters in your face. Randy Couture spoke candidly about James Toney and offered a lot of criticism but in a professional manner. He could have easily stood there and said Toney is garbage and other remarks but kept it professional. Good for you sir!

longtoothedparrot i had exactly the same reaction to his interview. he communicates very well. i also think 'respectfully declining' an opportunity to stand up and get pounded in the head by a guy that probably outweighs you by 50-75 (maybe more in toney's case) pounds is an intelligent choice.

carl wilburn They weigh about the same. Randy is just scared. Toney is man enough to get in a cage, Randy isn't man enough to get in a ring. Coward. He's a polite guy though.

The problem with your viewpoint on this is that Toney was arrogant enough that he believed whole-heartedly that he could smash anybody in the mixed martial arts game. He at first said his boxing was all he needed, then that he was training grappling and would be "ready/prepared". The bottom line is that everyone in MMA had a strong feeling of the outcome, just like if Couture were to trash Toney and boxing and swear that he could outbox him.

  • @pper79

  • @SnareBuff

The only disadvantage a rookie MMA fighter has instead of a rookie boxer is that a boxer just has to learn to box, and an MMA fighter has to be able to compete with black belts in various grappling styles, or champion wrestlers (imagine if Kurt Angle ever got into fighting years ago), not to mention the fighters that are great/powerful strikers. They may not be "up to par" in boxing standards, but this isn't boxing, and you can't box the same in the cage.

    only to an extent.
in the same sense that Couture was using to avoid a punch, Toney should have been obsessively guarding takedowns. Randy is an olympian and everyone knows his MO, he's gonna take you down and grind out a win. Toney took the fight knowing he was going against one of the top fighters of all time, and hats off to him for doing so, but it's his own lack of preparation that cost him that bout.

For all of you "boxers are better than mma fighters" people out there, listen very carefully to what Randy says at the very end of this interview. It sums up the real core of the arguement, and it can't be said any better.A pure boxer stands very little to NO chance of winning an MMA fight, and vice versa. And Randy not only acknowledges that, but gracefully and respectfully, and CORRECTLY declines the offer to fight a boxer in a boxing match. This fight "should" put to rest the arguement forever.

  • @OccamsKatana
    @OccamsKatana 11 ปีที่แล้ว

Some people - I think this includes James Tony - Say that submissions are weak and fake wins. and that a KO or TKO is a true win.
I think a submission is more of a win then a KO is.
With a KO, you've won, but the guy you KO'ed is going to be on his feet soon with no real injuries.
With a submission - You show that, if you're opponent didnt tap - You could have broken vital parts of his body and he would probably never be fighting again.

Apart from what the other guy said about learning to avoid eye gouging, hair pulling, etc, in arts such as ju-jutsu you also practice these quick and dirty tricks relentlessly because these arts were designed for survival. So these restrictions affect them far more than any boxer.
In the original UFC you could do anything other than eye gouge and boxers still lost. That is the time you had some of the most impressive submissions - just look at Royce Gracie.

I think it's funny how everyone gives james toney so much props for just getting into the octagon, What no one mentions is that he was paid a million dollars, I'm on dialysis and I'd get into the octagon for a million dollars. Actually I'd do it for free because I love the sport of mma. Don't get me wrong I also love the art of boxing; but what I don't understand is how can people dis Randy for how he won, criticizing him for not standing with Toney. Fight smart not hard.

Well if you think about it, the UFC/Zuffa only really emerged in 2000 and Dana White with his team began to shape what it has become today. Pride started itself up in the late 90's, but that was in Japan. Japan has always turned out quality fighters, as has Brazil and various European countries.
America has been the question mark. The Gracies brought jiu jitsu to the states, but it wasn't until the original UFC was founded did they actually start getting mass exposure.

@kerrycato911 of curse pankration was maded by bthe spartans, their boxing yes it was the first boxing but it wasnt todays boxing, today theres alot of boxing styles, they had old times boxing kinda like marciano. There grappling was pretty much like a mix of jiujitsu with wrestling. I think the best mix is boxing with takewondo muay thai, brazilian jiujitsu, wrestling, judo and aikido.
Sambo with pankration is a great mix to, also watch hwarangdo is very complete

  • @SnareBuff

And there are other styles that Americans weren't nationally aware of. Boxing and wrestling were considered the "all american" sports in terms of combat recognition. Sure there are various karate stylists, but they don't get the same respect.
I would agree with part of your statement, but with an adjustment to the rest f it. I would say that it applies to the caliber of some of the rookies in the sport. Accomplished fighters like GSP, Silva, Jones, etc., are world class.

@valiantbros I don't think so. Chuck to slow and tank throws wide punches. You have to understand a Boxers ability to throw punches as well as take them. Boxers take punches there's no tap out for them. They take them for 12 rd's and there a lot sharper throwing them.Toney did call out Chuck but that didn't happen so he got Randy a grappler. And a smart grappler you heard him he would never do a boxing match with Toney. Chuck's a MMA striker he rarely finish with a tap out. So he would bang out

  • @kerrycato911

@fitnessboyPR i got it! hwarangdo plus boxing!! nic stuff i didn't know my style had a name i'm nobody big but i have had a few fights with pro fighters. i had never heard of hwarangdo. looks good exept it does need some trimming down like all eastern martial arts does to make it in the cage. pretty impresive stuff though it needs some "PRO WRESLING" for flavor. just some stuff like the suplexs. and the thai elbows.

  • @SnareBuff
    @SnareBuff 11 ปีที่แล้ว

And I don't really think that MMA will ever reach the olympic level. With it being a culmination of styles, I would be afraid that it would overshadow the singular style brackets of things like judo, boxing, wrestling, etc. Not at first, but perhaps eventually. Not only that, but with boxing being more federation than company, fighters would have to forsake their companies (i.e. UFC) for olympic training and competition, possibly jeopardizing their contracts.

  • @schnozza132

Boxing is the best way to fight with fist and movements to avoid punches is very effective to avoid kicks or any kind of strikes. I think boxing, taekwondo, muay thai, bjj, wrestling and judoh is the perfect combo

I'm not so sure. According to all the pro-boxing MMA haters, even on the low end, a boxing match still grants more purse. Given that, and with how long it took to set the fight up with negotiations and training, would it not have made more sense to pursue some sort of boxing match instead? I would think so, but it's all speculation.

is quite large, and already they're dominating the PPV revenues
compared to boxing, WWE, or any other company in the entertainment

Randy knows his skills and he knows his limits. Toney bit off more than he could chew, and we all knew it. You'd be better suited to ask for someone like Bas Rutten or Cro Cop to sign a boxing match during their respective fighting careers. Even then, both men were kickboxers and would be severely limiting their arsenal.

@kerrycato911 jeet kune do is good for street not good for the cage. in the cage you have mouth guards and it helps dull down the hits. jeet dosn't have power in the hands. the flyng kicks won't help either. hwarangdo is good though

MMA is more fair than boxing because it would restrict fighting habilities, MMA does not. So boxers or other discipline focus would be the cowards for not fighting in a everything vs everything bout and trying to invite the other to his discipline.

Mico415 yeah but Randy's true strength is his wrestling his striking is not so good but I would say Jon jones Anthony Johnson Cain valesquez are more excellent & devastating strikers.

@60D550N23 A boxer and a mixed martial artist in a street fight, who would win that one? MMA.
Rocky is a movie. It's fictional. The Fighter is a fictional movie as well. I am a boxing fan and I like watching boxing more than I like watching MMA. I can't wait for Klitschko vs Haye this June, but you put either of them against Shane Carwin or Cain Velasquez and they would be unconscious within two minutes. Boxing is great to watch, but MMA is a superior fighting style(s).

Man, one boxing match i would love to see at 160 pounds is Canelo vs Mcgregor, Mcgregor would not last one round w/ Canelo. Mayweather carried Mcgregor throughout their fight, i believe, to make for an entertaining night.

@Redman092000 He declined because that's not his sport. If you PAYED attention to what he said you'd know that. Toney made a fool of himself by going to MMA. Randy said if he went to boxing he'd get destroyed. He's stated that he does not belong there. Case closed.

@kerrycato911 I tried the thumb on the ear on myself lightly and damn hurts like shit I can imagine how painful it would be when done for real on an opponent, I saw the chain punches damn that hurts like hell, its very similar to the wing chun punchand yeah no matter how big the oponent is after karate chain punches the oponent will colapse. I like hitting on the cranium as many times as I can with knuckles or hammer fists that hurts, stomping on foot fingers with all your weight on it hurts lol
